DAY 8
Online Learning
Activity 17: Op Art
Materials Needed:
Paper (large enough to fit hand with a bit extra around the
edges)
Pencil
Thin black marker
Colored pencils
Kneaded eraser
What to do:
Step 1 – Trace Your Hand
Lightly trace your hand using a
pencil. You do not want the
original outline of your hand to show when finished so trace as lightly as
possible. When you are tracing around your fingers make sure you are not
making them too thin.
If your fingers are too thin it will make it more difficult to add your lines in
the next step. This was one of the common struggles my students had when
completing this step.
Step 2 – Curved Lines
Begin adding your lines with a thin black sharpie or other type of thin marker. It seems to be easiest to
start at the bottom of the page. Begin where your arm is and draw a curved line on the arm and then
straight lines for the background.
It may be easier to have students start by using a pencil for the first four or five lines until they got the
hang of it, then using the marker to add the rest.
Tips:
 Make sure your straight lines for the background meet
where the curved lines of the arm and hands are
 Do not trace your outline of your hand and arm with the
black marker
 If there is too much space between your lines it will not
look like the hand is popping off the page. Be sure to
place your lines fairly close together
Creating an Optical Illusion
Step 3 – Curved Lines
Continue adding lines and moving up the paper towards the top of the
page. When doing the fingers I found it was easier to curve your lines in
the opposite direction instead of trying to add straight lines there.
If you look at the example below, the lines in the fingers curve up and the
lines in between the fingers curve down.
18 |A R T S 1 0 : M o d e r n A r t
Step 4 – Finishing the Optical Illusion
The most difficult part of this project is ending the fingers. It’s a bit of a
struggle to find a way to get back to straight lines at the top once you get
past the finger tips.
You don’t want the curves at the top of the page to exactly match the
curves on and around your fingers. Try to flatten out your lines as much as
possible so it won’t look like your fingers continue past the point where
they should end.
Step 5 – Monochromatic Color Scheme
Choose three colors, using a color scheme, and color between your
black lines with colored pencils. A monochromatic color scheme was
used for this example.
Use a pattern with your colors when filling in your op art hand. This
was done by using the darkest blue, the middle blue, and the light blue.
Then repeating that pattern of colors.
Gradating colors will help your hand pop off the page. Apply your
color darker at the edges of your fingers and hand. And make your
colors lighter at the highest point of your hand drawing.
You can use a kneaded eraser to lift some of the color off the ridges of the fingers, hand, and arm.

V. SUMMARY
 Impressionism developed in France in the nineteenth century and is based on the practice of
painting out of doors and spontaneously ‘on the spot’ rather than in a studio from sketches. Main
impressionist subjects were landscapes and scenes of everyday life.
 Expressionism refersto art in which the image of reality is distorted in order to make it expressive
of the artist’s inner feelings or ideas.
 Cubism was a revolutionary new approach to representing reality invented in around 1907–08 by
artists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. They brought different views of subjects (usually
objects or figures) together in the same picture, resulting in paintings that appear fragmented and
abstracted.
 Dada was an art movement formed during the First World War in Zurich in negative reaction to
the horrors and folly of the war. The art, poetry and performance produced by dada artists is often
satirical and nonsensical in nature.
 A twentieth-century literary, philosophical and artistic movement that explored the workings of
the mind, championing the irrational, the poetic and the revolutionary during surrealism.
 Pop art is an art movement that emerged in the 1950s and flourished in the 1960s in America and
Britain, drawing inspiration from sources in popular and commercial culture. Different cultures
and countries contributed to the movement during the 1960s and 70s.
 Op art was a major development of painting in the 1960s that used geometric forms to create
optical effects.
 Performance art is an artworks that are created through actions performed by the artist or other
participants, which may be live or recorded, spontaneous or scripted.

  • 17. 17 |A R T S 1 0 : M o d e r n A r t DAY 8 Online Learning Activity 17: Op Art Materials Needed: Paper (large enough to fit hand with a bit extra around the edges) Pencil Thin black marker Colored pencils Kneaded eraser What to do: Step 1 – Trace Your Hand Lightly trace your hand using a pencil. You do not want the original outline of your hand to show when finished so trace as lightly as possible. When you are tracing around your fingers make sure you are not making them too thin. If your fingers are too thin it will make it more difficult to add your lines in the next step. This was one of the common struggles my students had when completing this step. Step 2 – Curved Lines Begin adding your lines with a thin black sharpie or other type of thin marker. It seems to be easiest to start at the bottom of the page. Begin where your arm is and draw a curved line on the arm and then straight lines for the background. It may be easier to have students start by using a pencil for the first four or five lines until they got the hang of it, then using the marker to add the rest. Tips:  Make sure your straight lines for the background meet where the curved lines of the arm and hands are  Do not trace your outline of your hand and arm with the black marker  If there is too much space between your lines it will not look like the hand is popping off the page. Be sure to place your lines fairly close together Creating an Optical Illusion Step 3 – Curved Lines Continue adding lines and moving up the paper towards the top of the page. When doing the fingers I found it was easier to curve your lines in the opposite direction instead of trying to add straight lines there. If you look at the example below, the lines in the fingers curve up and the lines in between the fingers curve down.
  • 18. 18 |A R T S 1 0 : M o d e r n A r t Step 4 – Finishing the Optical Illusion The most difficult part of this project is ending the fingers. It’s a bit of a struggle to find a way to get back to straight lines at the top once you get past the finger tips. You don’t want the curves at the top of the page to exactly match the curves on and around your fingers. Try to flatten out your lines as much as possible so it won’t look like your fingers continue past the point where they should end. Step 5 – Monochromatic Color Scheme Choose three colors, using a color scheme, and color between your black lines with colored pencils. A monochromatic color scheme was used for this example. Use a pattern with your colors when filling in your op art hand. This was done by using the darkest blue, the middle blue, and the light blue. Then repeating that pattern of colors. Gradating colors will help your hand pop off the page. Apply your color darker at the edges of your fingers and hand. And make your colors lighter at the highest point of your hand drawing. You can use a kneaded eraser to lift some of the color off the ridges of the fingers, hand, and arm. DAY 9 Self-Directed Learning Activity 18: Different Principles of Art Define and draw examples of the different principles of art. Symmetrical Balance __________________________________________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________
  • 19. 19 |A R T S 1 0 : M o d e r n A r t DAY 10 Online Assessment V. SUMMARY  Impressionism developed in France in the nineteenth century and is based on the practice of painting out of doors and spontaneously ‘on the spot’ rather than in a studio from sketches. Main impressionist subjects were landscapes and scenes of everyday life.  Expressionism refersto art in which the image of reality is distorted in order to make it expressive of the artist’s inner feelings or ideas.  Cubism was a revolutionary new approach to representing reality invented in around 1907–08 by artists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. They brought different views of subjects (usually objects or figures) together in the same picture, resulting in paintings that appear fragmented and abstracted.  Dada was an art movement formed during the First World War in Zurich in negative reaction to the horrors and folly of the war. The art, poetry and performance produced by dada artists is often satirical and nonsensical in nature.  A twentieth-century literary, philosophical and artistic movement that explored the workings of the mind, championing the irrational, the poetic and the revolutionary during surrealism.  Pop art is an art movement that emerged in the 1950s and flourished in the 1960s in America and Britain, drawing inspiration from sources in popular and commercial culture. Different cultures and countries contributed to the movement during the 1960s and 70s.  Op art was a major development of painting in the 1960s that used geometric forms to create optical effects.  Performance art is an artworks that are created through actions performed by the artist or other participants, which may be live or recorded, spontaneous or scripted.
