to examine the social, economic and political

within society in a reflective and critical way.
10. WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF ARTS?
1. Aesthetic Value
• One of the biggest benefits of Contemporary Art
is its aesthetic value. This means that the art
possesses some capacity to elicit a sense of
pleasure in the viewer.
11. 2. Relaxation and Inspiration
• Research has shown that viewing art can be relaxing.
• This is used for some of the mindfulness exercises that
are currently so popular.
• Art can help to pull people out of their mind of racing
and wandering thoughts, into the present moment to
experience what is in front of them.
12. 3. Personal Expression
• One of the benefits of Contemporary Art is that it allows
individuals a means of personal expression.
• Through painting, sculpture, and performance art,
anyone can express themselves in a way that will be
safely observable for others.
• Likewise, the perspectives that are expressed are
valuable society because it gives a unique window into
the minds and thoughts of the art.
13. WHAT IS CONTEMPORARY
ART?
• refers to current and very recent practice.
• refers to works of art made by living artists.
• Today's artists work in and respond to a global
environment that is culturally diverse,
technologically advancing, and multifaceted.
• Working in a wide range of mediums,
contemporary artists often reflect and
comment on modern-day society.
14. • Contemporary artis the art of today, produced by
artists who are living in the twenty-first century.
• Contemporary art provides an opportunity to reflect
on contemporary society and the issues relevant to
ourselves, and the world around us.
• Contemporary artists work in aglobally
influenced,culturally diverse, and technologically
advancing world.
15. • Contemporary Art can be driven by both
theory and ideas, and is also characterized by
a blurring of the distinction between art and
other categories of cultural experience, such
as television, cinema, mass media,
entertainment and digital technology.
16. Contemporary Performance
• Contemporary performance is hybrid work that integrates
text, dance, objects, music, costumes, lighting, image,
sound, sets, and vocal expression into complex
interactive systems.
• Contemporary performance collages are often non-
narrative, technically rigorous, and carefully orchestrated
anarchic chaos. (Morgan v. P. Pecelli)
17. Characteristics of Contemporary Art
• Contemporary art mirrors contemporary
culture and society, offering teachers,
students, and general audiences a rich
resource through which to consider
current ideas and rethink the familiar.
18. • The work of contemporary artists is a dynamic
combination of materials, methods, concepts, and
subjects that challenges traditional boundaries and defies
easy definition.
• Diverse and eclectic, contemporary art is distinguished by
the very lack of a uniform organizing principle, ideology, or
-ism. In a globally influenced, culturally diverse, and
technologically advancing world, contemporary artists
give voice to the varied and changing cultural landscape
of identity, values, and beliefs.
19. • Contemporary art reflects a wide range of materials,
media, and technologies, as well as opportunities to
consider what art is and how it is defined. Artists today
explore ideas, concepts, questions, and practices that
examine the past, describe the present, and imagine the
future.
24. 1. Conceptual -
focus is on the idea,
which can be either
abstract or social;
One of his most iconic
artworks is the famous One
and Three Chairs (see
image above) from 1965.
25. 2. Social – current social & political topics are dealt
with, often from critical perspective.
Social art is the application of
arts and creativity towards the
transformation of individuals,
groups and societies by working
with your target audience as
opposed to for them.
26. 3. Expressive – both content & form is meaningful &
communicative.
Example: “Mabining Mandirigma” libretto by Dr.
Nicanor G. Tiongson, music by Joed Balsamo,
choreography by Denisa Reyes, set design by Toym Imao,
direction by Chris Millado.
27. 4. Popular culture - issues and aspects of popular
culture are dealt with, either by conceptualizing or
criticizing.
5. Poetic - content or form is poetic in nature;
Ex. Ronald Ventura, 'Blind Child' 2011 Biographical
- means of expression can be social, poetical or
expressive;
28. 6. Documentary - approach is documentary or
holds elements of research;
Ex. Opera: Sculpture in Dance Ballet
Philippines 2016
29. 7. Sense related - total art work,
installations which are often interactive and
affect different senses.
Arts produce by the national artist and contemporary to us. Arts in the Philippines refer to the various forms of the arts that have developed and accumulated in the Philippines from the beginning of civilization in the country up to the present era. They reflect the range of artistic influences on the country's culture, including indigenous forms of the arts, and how these influences have honed the country's arts.
Although, what is considered pleasing to the eye may vary depending on the viewer, given the wide variety of mediums and methods for this style of art there is likely to be some form that will appeal to each person.
This is helpful because it teaches people to do this also at other times, which can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
The artwork in question is a textbook example of Conceptual Art. He takes on the concept of a chair, showing a depiction of a chair, an actual chair, and the word chair and its definition by the manner of text.
What is the meaning of one and three chairs?
Joseph Kosuth. One and Three Chairs. 1965 | MoMA
In One and Three Chairs, Joseph Kosuth represents one chair three ways: as a manufactured chair, as a photograph, and as a copy of a dictionary entry for the word “chair.” The installation is thus composed of an object, an image, and words.
Examples of visual and performing social justice art includes: drawing, painting, sculpture, murals, graffiti, film, theater, music, dance, spoken word, etc.
Example of Music is UPUAN by Gloc 9
Mabining Mandirigma tells the story of Apolinario Mabini and how he fought the colonizers and even fellow Filipinos whom he believes were in favor of the former. Despite his disease, he still managed to fight for what is just and right for the people.
