Jan van Eyck developed modern oil painting techniques in the early 1400s. The neoclassical era from 1750-1830 featured precise, historically accurate paintings promoting nationalism. Jacques-Louis David's 1784 painting "Oath of the Horatii" used oils to dramatic effect. The romantic era from 1790-1875 emphasized emotion, imagination, and social struggles in art. 4. The long drying times of oil mean that artists using this medium would paint in sessions. Depending on the type of oil, drying time could be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks as it doesn’t evaporate to dry like water colors. Instead, oil dries by an oxidative chemical reaction over time.
