Agile is gathering momentum but its not easy to switch to Agile especially in complex environments like banking or multinationals. Many companies can’t refuse Waterfall but understand the value of Agile and want to start applying it. How to combine Waterfall and Agile in one project, do it effectively and get value? In every standard Waterfall phase from initiation till closure Agile is able to help Project manager, team and stakeholders be more effective, adaptive, meet end user expectations better and have a fun. There are cases from CISCO Systems, NASA, US health care program to learn from.
I want to demonstrate that it is possible and often necessary to combine both Waterfall and Agile in one project. We will review challenges of big complex environments that have absorbed Waterfall and have strict procedures and guidelines but are willing to gradually move to Agile.
Resource Planning is one of the biggest headaches for medium to large organizations. Creating a detailed resource plan that is meaningful is very difficult, and keeping it up to date is almost impossible. Plans that look good are often an attractive fiction, full of unrealistic assumptions, over-allocations, and the spreading of too-few people in too many ways.
Agile Resource Planning provides a very different approach to the classic model. It produces realistic plans that are simple to maintain, and effective for planning work over time. In this webinar, Dr. Kevin Thompson will present new concepts in Agile Resource Planning, which provide a practical and easy-to-use approach to Resource Planning that can be used for Agile and classic environments.

Why agile project management is better than waterfallOrangescrum
Agile project management is increasingly preferred over Waterfall today. However, agile project management is advisable for the small teams and startups with less number of people involved in projects. http://blog.orangescrum.com/
Agile project management is an iterative method of determining requirements for engineering and information technology development projects in a highly flexible and interactive manner. One difference between agile and iterative development is that the delivery time in agile is in weeks rather than months. Both iterative and Agile methodologies were developed as a reaction to various obstacles that developed in more traditional project management. For example, as technology projects grow in complexity, end users tend to have difficulty defining the long term requirements, without being able to view progressive prototypes. Projects that develop in iterations can constantly gather feedback to help refine those requirements.

Workshop
[Delivered at joint 8th International Conference on ESP in Asia and 3rd International Symposium on Innovative Teaching and Research in ESP, UEC, Tokyo. August 21, 2016]
In presentations, particularly during conference presentation Q&A, sci-tech EAP learners often prove unable to distil the underlying intentions of their research design or to identify the argument(s) surrounding their claim and the generalizability of their results.
These EAP learners usually have little training in rhetorical orchestration, especially since their research papers are built on the IMRAD structure, a rather poor metaphor for argument. As a result, these learners find spontaneous oral explanation and argument summarization difficult.
This workshop introduces the operation of a structured, low-text approach which has produced consistent, rapid development of the foundation target skills (argument analysis, argument construction) in classroom application (masters and PhD level). The key tool in this approach is the cross-platform freeware CmapTools, now widely adopted in science education. CmapTools automatically generates Novakian maps (maps in which each link is articulated by a relation phrase). Learners find these maps easy to evaluate in terms of correctness of relations and shockingly accessible in terms of structure of information.
This workshop begins with an overview of current styles of concept visualization (and their attendant syntax and information structures) so as to give participants a broad practical overview of mapping practice today. Participants will then be introduced to the use of CmapTools, and will take part in guided model task performance.
The workshop activities will be low-tech (post-its and marker pens) to maximize accessibility.
However, participants who would like to 'lean in' on this skill set are encouraged to download Cmap Tools to their laptops (Mac, Win or Linux) or iPads, familiarize themselves with the basic functions of the software (takes about 15 minutes), and show up equipped for bigger-curve learning.
DOES16 London - Margo Cronin - DevOps for Enterprises; ("Respect the Monolit...Gene Kim
Ms. Margo Cronin, Head of Technology Architecture, Zurich Insurance
DevOps for Enterprises; ("Respect the Monolith!")
There is a lot of information about DevOps, the technology, the culture, the behaviour. There is not, to be honest, a lot of information about tackling DevOps in large enterprises and there is certainly very little about tackling DevOps in large financial organizations.
This presentation will talk about lessons learnt rolling out DevOps in a large insurance organization. What are the characteristics of these organizations? They are very different to Facebook, Twitter, IT product companies and start ups. They are large, they typically have an "old brand" and maybe resistant to change, they outsource sometimes both Dev and Ops and sometimes to many different providers, they are global and built on a matrix structure of many business units and segments, they often are running application consolidation programs, they frequently are resistant to cloud based technologies, they are project rather than product driven with large project portfolios, they have stringent but maybe ineffective governance models. When approaching DevOps in this style of organisation I like to use the mantra "Respect the Monolith" - where the Monolith is not just the legacy IT systems but also some of the above challenges. Underestimating these challenges will be the downfall of a DevOps initiative.
I will cover a "successful" DevOps initiative that I set up for the organization and show how it "failed". I will cover how security, suppliers and regulation impacted us. This will be a great presentation for anyone about to embark on a DevOps journey in a large disparate organization.

Beginner/Entry-Level Agile Interview questions and Answers
1. Explain agile methodology.
Agile methodology is a software development paradigm that emphasizes iterative and incremental development. The agile strategy is based on delivering a product in tiny operational increments or builds. Every program built is a better and more advanced version of the previous one. The development team and stakeholders are constantly collaborating on enhancements and changes in requirements.
Alternatively, we can describe the agile approach as the process of continuously providing functioning software while maintaining regular communication with stakeholders in order to ensure customer satisfaction.
2. How many types of Agile Methodologies are there? Enumerate them.
Agile Methodologies are classified into seven different types. They are:
• Scrum
• Kanban
• Extreme Programming
• Feature-Driven Development (FDD)
• Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM)
• Lean
• Crystal
3. What are the merits and demerits of the agile technique?
The following are some of the most noteworthy benefits of the agile methodology:
• Agile software development is one of the quickest and most flexible methodologies available.
• During the development phase, customers might adjust their needs at any time.
• It largely focuses on the software product's regular release. As a result, clients have the opportunity to see the product in its early stages of development.
• Customers have the option of providing comments on any working deliverable they receive.
• Because the development team focuses on creating a product that matches the customer's needs, this strategy ensures customer happiness.
• It focuses mostly on the product's good design.
We know clients' demands drive product development, which is precisely why a custom software development company can't afford to let processes and documentation slow down their time to market. Agile comes to rescue in these times and helps solve the problem by determining what clients need. It's all about working software over complicated documentation, getting stakeholders involved, getting customers on board, and being transparent about the process.
The development of software is planned in stages and steps that culminate in the construction of functional applications of software. As a start-up, you are a new bug in this competitive industry.
Agile project management is becoming a key skill within the software industry. As more businesses adopt agile, they are seeking dedicated agile project management methods to help them. Individuals with agile certifications in project management can therefore command a premium in the jobs market. Read on to find out more about agile and project management and professional certification.
Agifall - Combining Waterfall and Agile Development Process for Digital and S...Mark Fromson
We all know waterfall has generally fallen out of favour and agile is the new process wunderkind. However, is pure agile really appropriate, or even possible, for the majority of our current digital projects? If the technical team is driving the agile development process from the start, just how and when do we integrate the user experience and creative contribution into the project lifecycle? Does agile really mean development first with no upfront design or specification, or, is there a better way to make agile development more effective when it begins? Certainly agile can be problematic for client projects when the statement of work contract is king for establishing project scope ahead of time. So how do we successfully integrate the benefits of agile into client-vendor engagements without putting either party at risk? This presentation topic is on how to effectively combine the best of waterfall and agile into a hybrid process model called “Agifall.” No process is perfect, but Agifall just might be the one that works best for your next project.
Products and Value: An Agile Perspective BY Matt Nudelmann (GUEST PRESENTER)Samuel Chin, PMP, CSM
You may have heard of Agile methodology before, especially in the context of web development ... but can we apply Agile principles to our study of process?
In this session, guest presenter Matt Nudelman explains how to understand some core elements of process, Product and Value, from an Agile point of view. He covers a range of topics including: the difference between a product and a project, Agile project management, the 80/20 rule, what an MVP is, and defining value using the Agile framework.
We also discussed how these principles apply to the process work we've been doing, and what we can take away for practical application.

As we are amid the huge crisis induced by the coronavirus, the concerns among the technology industry have sparked regarding who can emerge victorious in the post-pandemic future, and how?
As RPA or for better terms Intelligent Automation is being touted as the recession-proof technology, can it really help companies face crisis well?
How new-age technologies like this help steer the industry out of upheaval is yet to be fully discovered. As of now, what we can do is to look for answers in history.
We can then analyse how some companies were successful in defeating recessions of the past.
Analysing the corporate strategy and shifts data of past major global recessions, the 1980 crisis (which lasted from 1980 to 1982), the 1990 slowdown (1990 to 1991), and the 2000 bust (2000 to 2002), the Great Recession of 2008, HBR’s 2010 study revealed that, only a small number of companies—approximately 9% of their sample—flourished after a slowdown, doing better on key financial parameters than they had before it and outperforming rivals in their industry by at least 10% in terms of sales and profits growth.
With any new technology, half the battle is figuring out what you can do with it. While it took centuries to find any practical applications for electricity, for example, these days things move a little faster.
RPA (Robotic Process Automation) has gone in just a few years from new kid on the block, to being over-hyped, to what Gartner in its annual hype cycle calls the “plateau of productivity”. It means businesses are now finding that RPA delivers on its promises.
But just because there are lots of case studies out there showing RPA working for other businesses, doesn’t mean it will work for you. Every business, every department, and every process is different. Identifying the opportunities in your own business means embarking on a journey of discovery.
While it will hopefully be a worthwhile journey, it doesn’t have to take long, and you don’t have to undertake it on your own. What's called for is an expert guide who knows the full capabilities of the technology and can assess which areas of your business would benefit from it, along with some quantitative and qualitative predictions of the impact of doing the work. Here’s an outline of what that journey looks like
Have you ordered a product online and received a shipping notification via email, or perhaps filled out a job application online? If so, then you’ve been exposed to the technology known as Robotic Process Automation (RPA). But what exactly is RPA?
Put simply, RPA allows for the configuration of software “robots” to capture data and perform routine tasks ranging from automated emails to streamlining process flows or business operations. Not only is RPA simple to employ, it provides a number of benefits such as an increase in efficiency and improved customer service.
Now that you have an idea what RPA is, you may be wondering what type of career path is available to someone interested in this intriguing and rewarding field. One of the many RPA career possibilities available is that of an RPA developer
Robotic process automation (RPA) is changing business processes in almost every industry by streamlining data entry and other low-level tasks. Presently the innovation, which populates digital forms in a small amount of the time it takes people to do likewise, is getting a long-overdue upgrade. Progression in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence is making businesses ready for intelligent automation (IA), a more brilliant brand of RPA that figures out how to execute entire business processes with context, instead of as a progression of discrete tasks.
However, most companies have much bigger fish to broil than simply keeping operational costs low and bridging technology gaps. Also, with regards to really delivering business results from on-time delivery to income growth or the elusive customer experience, RPA is actually a small piece of a lot bigger picture
Regardless of how you define “digital”, digital transformation is about more than incorporating new technology into your business processes.
Tech solutions are tools that facilitate digital transformation, enabling you to make fundamental changes to your company’s culture and operations.
This means replacing established, often obsolete, tasks with more efficient and cost-efficient applications – our obvious example here is the replacement of manual data entry with automated data capture.
Digital transformation requires a corporate culture that is willing to try out disruptive technologies, abandon outdated practices, and, most importantly, accept failure as part of the journey to improvement
Robotic process automation (RPA) today is progressing rapidly in practically all the fields, not in a minute but every second. With this quick advancement in technology, huge development has been seen worldwide in the automation industry. The use of automation tools is in constant development and it is anticipated for more growth in the future.
The robotic process automation is one of the major transformations in the automation industry, and it is likely to reach higher potential concerning utilization and staff performance in the upcoming year. Robotic process automation especially focuses on the process automation of those enterprises which are mostly business specific and are handled by people. Utilizing RPA, all the tasks would be automated effectively, and in the future, the robotics oriented automated devices will be exceptionally powerful

A user story is the smallest unit of work in an agile framework. It’s an end goal, not a feature, expressed from the software user’s perspective.
A user story is an informal, general explanation of a software feature written from the perspective of the end user or customer.
The purpose of a user story is to articulate how a piece of work will deliver a particular value back to the customer. Note that "customers" don't have to be external end users in the traditional sense, they can also be internal customers or colleagues within your organization who depend on your team.
User stories are a few sentences in simple language that outline the desired outcome. They don't go into detail. Requirements are added later, once agreed upon by the team.
People are biased to look for simple and immediate solutions that reduce uncertainty, especially during times of crises.
No surprise then that digital transformation efforts driven by business survival look different from those that are carefully planned and prepared. Instead of a North Star that hovers in the distance above all digital initiatives, the overarching question becomes:
How can we leverage digital technologies to ensure business continuity now?
Contact centers work with large amounts of customer data. When done manually, this can wreak havoc. Overloaded employees can ask customers to repeat their details multiple times, causing frustration and slowing down the resolution of the issue at hand.
It’s easy to see that situations like these are likely to irritate customers, and thereby downgrade the credibility of the company.
Robotic process automation can cancel out the risk of error when extracting, analyzing and cross-referencing data across multiple sources.
The employees can then invest all their resources in actually attending customers. In the end, both the customers and the employees are more satisfied and less stressed.
One of the challenging areas to tackle for telecom providers is capacity demand, as an increasing amount of rich content is constantly being transferred between apps, devices, and users.
With an increase in traffic levels and the complexity of distributed networks, telecom network management becomes difficult for service providers
Implementing RPA technology allows telecom providers to use automated solutions for repetitive tasks like incident, event, and diagnostics management so that network engineers can divert their focus towards more complex processes.
The pharmaceutical industry is under the spotlight after the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. In fact, it is the sector that raises highest expectations with regard to keeping under control and minimizing the coronavirus human toll. The main reason that we recommends the use of RPA in pharmaceutical companies is the large number of routine tasks that make up the workflow profile. Consider the need to duplicate notes on several systems to ensure consistent reporting of the work that is split between more labs, the management of clinical trial data, or the recurring regulatory filings
The advantage of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is that it automates repetitive, remedial tasks and frees employees to work on higher value tasks. But many companies believe RPA will enable them to automate even the most complex Business Process Management (BPM) activities, although there are much more suitable solutions available. The following overview shows which other misconceptions companies frequently use to counter RPA solutions.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

DevOps and Testing slides at DASA ConnectKari Kakkonen
My and Rik Marselis slides at 30.5.2024 DASA Connect conference. We discuss about what is testing, then what is agile testing and finally what is Testing in DevOps. Finally we had lovely workshop with the participants trying to find out different ways to think about quality and testing in different parts of the DevOps infinity loop.
Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

4. ““We want to run this project as Agile”
What Do They Mean by AGILE
Most project planning meetings often begin with
this opening phase .This statement then leads to a
large portion of time being spent picking apart what
the other party actually means
5. “
In the majority of cases the other party is looking
for flexibility and visibility during the project build
phase, however they also want the project at a
fixed price.
What Do They Mean by AGILE
6. “It is possible to achieve a purely Agile project,
however you need buy-in from the start on key
ideals such as
✘Undefined deliverables
✘Increased resources
✘Willingness to accept failure
What Do They Mean by AGILE
7. Undefined deliverables
they will be discovered during
the project, not defined prior to
beginning development. This
also means the duration of the
project is undefined; it finishes
when you're happy with the
state of the product.
Increased resources
Increased resources
compared to a Waterfall
project – due to the undefined
scope, usually at every stage
a developer, tester and
requirement owner is required.
If you have multiple
components being worked on
during the iteration then this
multiplies out.
Willingness to accept
failure
this is hard to accept, but
as there is no end goal it
has to be accepted that
time may be spent on a
component or research
that ultimately isn't
required. What Agile
does allow for compared
with Waterfall, is to
discover this earlier,
perhaps within a single
iteration instead of in
UAT at the end of a

add agility to the project. The project isn't
Waterfall and it's not pure Agile, it's an iterative
approach bringing in the best of the Agile
frameworks

9. What Is Agile
Agile is a framework that has a few different
official methodologies you can choose from.
The basic tenant is to focus on making working
products in an iterative fashion and adjusting to
change without being stifled by rigid process.
10. What Is Agile
Agile is a group of software development
methods based on iterative and incremental
development, where requirements and
solutions evolve through collaboration
between self-organizing, cross-functional
teams.
11. What Is Agile
It promotes adaptive planning, evolutionary
development and delivery, a time-boxed
iterative approach, and encourages rapid
and flexible response to change
12. Evolution Of Agile
As with any new technology, process or
methodology in the industry there was quickly a
move to label, productize and capitalize on it.
This led to a narrowing and defining of multiple
'Agile Frameworks' and ultimately certification.
These frameworks include:
✘Scrum
✘Kanban
✘Lean
✘Extreme Programming (XP)
✘Agile Modeling
14. How Agile Works
I am going to outline a simple
Agile/Scrum approach
✘Start with a Product Backlog.
The product backlog defines,
usually in the form of User
Stories, what will be delivered
✘. The Product Owner, with
the help of business users,
create the User Stores. Using
older terminology, these are
the requirements.
✘The Product Owner, with the
help of the business users and
the key stakeholders then
prioritize the items on the
Product Backlog.
✘Then you define your Sprint
Backlog. The Sprint Backlog
defines, usually in the form of
tasks, how each item on the
Product Backlog will be delivered.
Sprints are usually 2-4 weeks in
duration. The Sprint Backlog is
created by the development
team. Each item on the Sprint is
estimated with a number of
hours. Each Sprint lasts roughly
2-4 weeks. Items
✘During the Sprint, developers
meeting on a daily basis for a
short meeting to discuss any
roadblocks or problems they are
encountering. This meeting is
facilitated by the Scrum Master
whose job it is to remove
roadblocks and help problem
solve. The progress on the
Sprint Backlog is typically
tracked using the Sprint Burn
down chart.
✘The first underlying principle
in Agile is "Customer
satisfaction by rapid delivery of
useful software.”. Along those
lines, the ideas of "welcome
changing requirements, even
late in development" (the
second principle) and
"Working software is delivered
frequently" (the third principle)
both underscore the
importance of adapting to
change and doing it quickly
15. Advantage Agile
✘Visibility – 'Show and Tell' sessions of a set frequency, normally budget dependant, to review progress,
provide confidence that we (the supplier) are on the right track, and for us to verify that the components
built haven't been misunderstood. This is highly valuable during the build phase of a project and is what
we find leads to better software.
✘•Iterations / sprints – Clearly defined time blocks with set deliverables. Kanban can be mixed in to the
iteration planning either with the project team or internally within the development team.
✘•Minimum Viable Product (MVP) – This is a key tenant of Lean. As quickly as possible get to a viable
release. It doesn't have to be the full final product, but get something in the hands of the end
✘•Users as soon as possible. This may be seen to be too risky or contain too many unknowns, if so look
to phase the project, keeping the phases small and succinct.
16. 10 Reasons
To Take SharePoint Implementation
Agile:✘1 Push past a SharePoint business as usual
approach to become truly excellent at SharePoint
development
✘2.Deliver SharePoint applications to the business
more effectively and efficiently
✘3.Increase SharePoint end user adoption and
satisfaction
✘4.Foster a leading-edge approach to business
analysis and improve how you interface with the
business to deliver projects
✘5.Bring a JAD/RAD approach to how your
organization gathers requirements and builds
✘6.Increase the percentage of IT projects
completed on time and within budget
✘7.Improve the overall quality of SharePoint
applications developed at your organization
✘8.Improve the alignment between IT, the
business, and key compliance functions (such as
records management and legal)
✘9.Increase the cooperation between business
analysts, quality assurance, developers, and
production support during the software
development process
✘ 10 Do more with less
17. Challenges of
Taking SharePoint Implementation Agile:
✘One of the major problems with SharePoint development is that the framework is not designed with
testability in mind.
✘ It is not easy to replace the SharePoint object model using Mocks/ Stubs which makes practices like
unit testing more difficult in SharePoint development.
✘ Once an organization has made a decision to develop on and has collected the right people, it's time to
figure out how to get the work done...the process
18. Agile For SharePoint
Taking SharePoint Implementation Agile:Agile is rapidly gaining in
popularity among software
shops of all types. And for
good reason. It's time it
worked it's way into
SharePoint development.
Most companies that
implement SharePoint
don't realize or
understand the path they
are taking when they start
down the path of custom
SharePoint development.
Most companies that
implement SharePoint
don't realize
after they have learned more
about SharePoint – rather
than what they think they
want at the start. This also
prevents user overload,
which is always a risk
when flipping the switch
on a ton of new features
all at once.
Agile for SharePoint can be implemented
as a comprehensive process solution for
software development at companies that
have extensive custom development
needs and large teams of developers.
Or it could be implemented by 1
developer who just wants to follow the
manifesto and 12 principles when
working with his SharePoint business
users. The results should be the same:
the consistent, rapid delivery of valuable
software
19. Agile For SharePoint
Taking SharePoint Implementation Agile:Implementing SharePoint is no easy measure,
regardless of your organization’s size and previous
SharePoint experience.
The beauty of an agile approach to implementing
SharePoint is that your users get to experience your
SharePoint solutions as they evolve rather than after
they’re finished. This means that stakeholders can get
what they actually want at the end of the project –
Or understand the path they are taking
when they start down the path of custom
SharePoint development.
Assuming, however, that you are there
(you either have custom SharePoint
solutions to support or have undertaken
a new project to implement a custom
solution),
you should select the software
development methodology that has thus
far, in my opinion, proven most
successful.
20. Agile For SharePoint
Taking SharePoint Implementation Agile:SharePoint elements for collaboration
make it easy to support
communication among all interested
parties to the project.
This communication can take the form
of views, reports, and email alerts.
Two common type of Sprint Status
Report are the Scrum Board and
Sprint Burn Down Chart. The Scrum
Board shows the current state and
progress of all the current Sprint
backlog items.
Usually the fall into four states –
✘ Not Started,
✘ In Progress,
✘ In Review,
✘and Completed.
The Sprint Burn Down Charts
graphically shows the expected
drawdown of hours or points and the
actual accumulation of hours or points
in comparison. This kind of chart
makes it easy to see where the current
Sprint progress is. There are a couple
of ways to manage this in SharePoint
by either including a Spreadsheet or
developing a list to carry the data being
presented in the Chart.
21. Agile For SharePoint
Conclusion
Agile is a very popular project management method. It is especially useful in managing rapid
deployment of new product features in measured cycles. SharePoint 2013 can be leveraged
as a platform for managing Agile
