Impressionist and Post–Impressionist art in its permanent collection. Much can be found in its
collection of American art, Old Masters, European and American decorative arts, Asian art, Islamic
art, Ancient and Classical Egyptian art, modern and contemporary art, and architecture and
industrial and graphic design. In total, the collection size numbers about 300,000 works and is
visited about one–hundred and fifty million times each year. The Art Institute is the second–largest
art museum in the United States after the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The museum
was at first an Academy of Design studio founded by a group of 35 artists. When the ... Show more

These works range from early Japanese prints to modern American art. The museum is most famous
for its collections of Impressionist, Post–Impressionist, and American paintings. Many famous
paintings are housed in the Institute such as The bedroom by Vincent van Gogh, A Sunday
Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat, American Gothic by Grant Wood,
Nighthawks by Grant Wood, The Old Guitarist by Pablo Picasso, and many more. Not only does the
museum hold art pieces but other pieces of art from different mediums as well. On the lower levels
are the Thorne Miniature rooms which showcase interior American, European, and Asian
architectural and furniture styles from the Middle Ages to the 1930s. Several works are also
designed with description plates written in braille for the visually impaired. There are also galleries
that showcase ancient civilization pieces such as the Ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman galleries
which hold the mummy and the mummy case of Paankhenamun. The Art Institute also offers an
African American Art Collection that can be freely explored without the restraints that once
accompanied it. Many pieces provide a close look of the progress made by African Americans as
well as their continuing struggle. Pieces like Samuel J. miller's Frederick Douglass daguerreotype is
showcased in this collection. This collection also offers statues and figures such as The Boxer by
Richmond Barthe. The Institute also has a department called the Publications Department of the Art
Institute of Chicago focused primarily on publishing books and offers titles focused on the
museum's rich collection, history, and exhibitions. The books published by the Department are
distributed nationally and internationally by the Yale University

The crèche bodies are made from hemp and wire, the heads are molded out of terracotta with eyes
made of glass, and the hands and feet are carved out of wood. The artists would then use oil paints
to achieve the most realistic expressions and details on the figurines. The figures are flexible so they
can be positioned within the setting. Many of the figures in the crèche wear their original silk
garments made in the royal silk factory in San Leucio. The painstaking details of the costumes are
constructed of luxurious, rich fabrics such as damasks, silks, linens, and laces. One could tell the
peasant figures because they wore simple clothes and had bare feet or sandals. They are wearing
muted dirty looking clothing, but quite possibly even made out of paper. The wealthy and nobility
wore regal royal colored robes, leather shoes and perhaps even a turban or headwear. Their
costumes were quilted, embroidered using gold or silver thread, embellished with silk ribbons, and
tiny colored glass beads. Some women were clothed in lace petticoats, elaborate bustles, and silk–
lined dresses with metallic lace over–skirt. The crèche figurines are authentically dressed in details

The Medium Of Art By Leonardo Da Vinci 's Mona Lisa
Of all the creative mediums in existence, of which there are a plethora to discover, the medium of
Art, although recognized by most as a legitimate creative medium, is one of the most controversial.
However, in the subject of practical artwork, sculptures, paintings, and performance artworks, the
idea of a definitive artwork is almost non–existent. Although there are artworks that exist, such as
Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, which are known seemingly universally (Torov, 2011), there are
few critics or viewers who can explain just what exactly constitutes it as a good artwork. This
investigation appears to become universal to many other artworks, an argument that arises between
technical mastery, motives, and meaning, if any at all. That is to say that interpretation battles
against visual astonishment. However, although the visuals are by far the most striking part of
almost any artwork, the first thing that most look for beyond the visual elements is the story being
told within the visuals. It is for this reason that many war–time, or significant event paintings are
remembered; it's well known, and is a story that is being told constantly through all mediums,
within the realm of out, and outside that same realm. Untitled (Perfect Lovers) by Felix Gonzalez

Compare And Contrast Monet And Monet
Monet Oscar–Claude Monet was a famous French painter who was one of the main artists of the
Impressionism movement. Monet was an artist who was obsessed with light. The Royal Academy of
arts didn't accept his work but this was never a setback for him. He wanted to capture the change in
light in every moment; hence this is the reason why he chose to paint different paintings of the same
scenes. He used several canvases simultaneously so that he could capture light in each of his canvas.
Hence his paintings, "Haystack 6/20", "Haystack 7/20", "Haystack 10/20", these are all paintings of
the same place but Monet was successfully able to show the change of color of the sample place.
Monet took only 2–3 hours to paint, in the previous movements, ... Show more content on

Degas was fascinated by "accidental photography". One of his very famous painting is, "Carriage at
the Races" which is a scene shown at the race track. The race is taking place in the back ground; a
family is shown with a baby mother and the father. Degas is trying to show the action taking place
in the background and the involvement of the family within themselves. However, the main focus of
the painting that Degas has captured a photography image in his canvas. The first look at the
painting shows that the whole painting is completely off center. The face of the horse is cut off, the
ear of the horse is in the center and there is more background shown in the painting rather than the
family portrait in the carriage. Similarly his paintings of the ballerina series, "The rehearsal on
Stage", instead of showing the beautiful ballerinas, he captured the backstage image in his painting.
The effect of photography, financers, producers, a teacher and ballerinas getting ready can be seen.
Another painting of his, "Concert Café Singer", he has captured a moment with the stage light, and
the woman singing. The image of the singer is painted as a close–up, the open mouth and the spot
light gives a real life expression of the face of the singer during her

Edward Hopper, An American Realist Painter
Edward Hopper was an American realist painter born in 1882 in New York. After studying art and
many journeys, he had trouble getting famous and put on the art world map. But finally, in 1933, a
first installation is dedicated to him at the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York. His works
are mainly inspired by his journeys, trips to different places and the solitude of the American in the
twentieth century. Nighthawks is his most famous piece of art (Laura Herail, blog). After
researching and looking at many of his paintings, this artwork portrays sadness and yet it is not a
sad picture. It could be something enticing and yet charming about anonymous diners. The lack of
domesticity offering a relief what can be the full comfort of home. It may be easier to give away to
sadness here than in a cozy living room with wallpaper and framed pictures. Home often appears to
have betrayed Hopper's characters, something has happened there that forces them out into the night
and on to the road. The 24 hour diner is a sanctuary for those who for some reason or another have
failed to find there place in the normal world of relationships or community. Hopper's ability to
portray solitude comes from his own familiarity with it. He lead comfortable middle class childhood
as a son of a merchant, yet inside Hopper often felt a little bit awkward like an outsider. Hoping for
a while to be an artist and yet his parents insisted he trains in commercial art to keep afloat
financially. He hated

Georges Seurat 's A Sunday Morning On The Island Of La...
Three weeks ago I visited the Art Institute of Chicago. It was established in 1879 and has since
expanded its collection to approximately three hundred thousand works. Attracting over one and a
half million visitors annually, it is one of the largest art museums in the United States. The reason I
chose this site is that I read that it displayed Georges Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of
La Grande Jatte, and I wanted to see it in person because it is so iconic. While at the Art Institute of
Chicago, I spent most of my time in "The Elizabeth Hammond Stickney Gallery". There were three
pieces in this gallery: Saint Michael and the Devil, The Birth of Saint John the Baptist, and Saint
George Killing the Dragon. Each piece was made in the Renaissance period in Europe in the
fifteenth to sixteenth centuries. I believe the main reason these pieces are grouped together is that
they all contain a depiction of a saint. Another reason for this arrangement is that all these paintings
all represent the survival of holy figures and the death of the evil ones. This is shown in each piece
by either a saint killing an evil creature or the birth of a holy saint. The piece I will analyze from the
previously mentioned gallery is Saint George Killing the Dragon by Bernat Martorell which was
made in 1434/35. This piece is a painting made on a support of panel with a media of tempera and
stucco. The main subject of the painting is a man wearing armor on a white horse. The man on the

Abstract Expressionism In Modern Society
During the time of the 19th and early 20th century, became a time known as modern society, known
for its modernity and time of modernism. During this time, artists were flourishing and growing into
their own skin, pushing the limits in art, never seen before. This was a time where society became
dominated by industrialization, modernization around civilization. The focus became more on
machine–age life than ever before. But with machine–age life came the city life, below the night–
lights where new art forms developed. This was a time where the man by the name of Edward
Hopper became apart of the spotlight. Hopper was considered a realist type of artist. His imagery of
figures within urban settings goes well beyond their role as modern cityscapes, exposing the under
layer of the human experience. Though he was considered a realist, his work was during a time
between the World Wars. By considering the dramatic use of soft lighting, smallest action and
representation of smaller spaces, Hopper led the way towards Abstract Expressionism. A hot topic
during this time was discussion of work led by Willard Huntington Wright. Wright believed that,
"art had principles of form and organization that could be rationally discussed and that it progressed
toward a goal of purity" (p.16, Hills). Wright's work and analysis was known as being a formalist
meaning, " modern art tends toward the elimination of all those accretions so beloved by the general

Nighthawks by Edward Hopper
Nighthawks, was painted in 1942 by Edward Hopper (1882–1967) an artist who was known as "a
great master in the ranks of America realists." (Levin, Gail) Hoppers paintings were first hung in
"retrospective in 1933, Hopper played host just three years later to the first major show of surrealist
art in New york." (Levin, Gail) Hopper grew up in Washington Square, and lived there for most of
his life. " Hopper excelled in creating realistic pictures of clear–cut, sunlit streets and houses, often
without figures." (Levin, Gail) "He offers a brand of realism not bound to reality, and the places he
depicts are familiar and foreign, comfortable and disquieting," said the USA Times. The painting
resides in the Art institute of Chicago. Nighthawks just like many of Hoppers paintings give a
feeling of loneliness, and isolation as well as a feeling of darkness due to the dark hues. The picture
leaves the viewer with thousands of words and interpretations with a third person view of an
isolated man as he sits in a small parlor and ponders. The painting was created in 1942, which took
place during the time of the great depression.
Hopper frequently chose to give his paintings discreet and dark feelings. Dark hues were used to
give a feeling of darkness contrasted with bright lights from inside the parlor. As well as using dark
hues, Hopper blends these well with the red of the building in the back round as the last of the
sunlight beams off the building. Hopper centers a man in

Into the World There Came a Soul Called Ida
The painting, Into the World There Came a Soul Called Ida was painted by Ivan Albright in 1929–
1930. Albright gave the painting to the Chicago Art Institute as a gift in 1977. The painting depicts
the sadness of a once young and vibrant woman, facing the realities of getting old. Even though she
is beautiful in her own way, the sadness on her face and aging body portrays a grim and depressed
woman.
The painting is a large painting it is almost five feet tall and four feet wide. It is an oil painting on
traditional canvass. The color choice is very dark and gloomy. It serves the purpose of putting the
viewer in a somber mood. From the first glance you can tell that this is a sad setting. To some
viewers Ida might bring a feeling of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The two most obvious things to me that stand out in this work are the texture, and the strong
meaning behind the subject matter. Albright was known to be very meticulous in his detail. He was
known to have used hundreds of different brushes for a project, some with as little as one hair on
them for the finest details, such as the hair strands on Ida's comb. This is all evident in the texture of
everything depicted in the painting, but particularly in the detail he paid to Ida's skin. The bulging
shape of her legs and face depict far more than the effects of aging alone. They show the decay of
one's body that is prepared to accept death. Albright was so deliberate in his painting, for example
he would paint for roughly five hours a day, in that time he would only cover one half of a square
inch. Once satisfied he would never return to that spot and make any changes (Hubbard). While
everything else in the painting seems to signify death, or doom, the choice of lighting is interesting.
It seems to be coming from above from the heavens giving her image a certain aura about her which
might signify the possibility of redemption or salvation. The lighting also draws Ida out towards the
viewer letting the viewer know that this is the main subject (Donnell).
Albright was so attracted to the great painters of Northern Europe; he tried to emulate their work
habits in every possible way. For example

negatives of the Art Institute of Chicago is that the Islamic Asian art is under developed. There are
two pieces that represent Islamic influence Indian art. The second is the expense to visit is high.
Parking and admission for someone who lives out of state will cost fifty dollars. There are two
exhibitions and three collections worth mentioning in this institute. The two exhibits are the Gates
of the Lord: The Tradition of Krishna Paintings and Kesa: Japanese Buddhist Monks' Vestments.
The collections that are worth checking out are the Southeastern and Oceania, South Asian, Korean,
the Chinese, and Japanese. The first exhibit, Gates of the Lord: The Tradition of Krishna Paintings,
is a must see. This exhibit focus on the Hindu culture. The artwork is focused on Krishna, Hindu
deity, and other religious symbols. The exhibit reveals how people worship throughout the year. The
music playing in the background is traditional Indian music. The walls are specifically painted to
enhance the artwork. The artwork contains large amount of gold color in them. The art work has

Les Grands Boulevard And La Grande Jatte
Through my analysis and comparison of Les Grands Boulevard and La Grande Jatte I hope to
convey to the reader that these two paintings, although painted in different styles, both illustrate the
need to slow down and enjoy life. Les Grands Boulevards is a 20 1/2 x 25in. European oil on canvas
painting created by Pierre–Auguste Renoir in 1875 during the impressionism movement
("Philadelphia Museum of Art"). The painting is currently housed in the Philadelphia Museum of
Art ("Philadelphia Museum of Art"). A Sunday on La Grande Jatte is another European oil on
canvas painting. Georges Seurat started this painting in 1884 during the post impressionism
movement and completed it in 1886 ( "About This Artwork."). In 1889 Seurat made one final
change to La Grande Jatte, restretching the canvas to 81 3/4 x 121 1/4in in order to add a painted
border ( "About This Artwork."). The painting is now located at the Art Institute of Chicago (
"About This Artwork.").
Renoir's use of blurred details, blended colors and optical effect of light and color in Les Grands
Boulevard show a fleeting moment of contemporary life in Paris in 1875.The painting depicts one of
the so called grands boulevard of Paris. Brought about by the industrial revolution, the boulevard
was a newly restored and modernized urban setting at the time Renoir painted it. The painting shows
a busy populated street with people going about their day. Amidst the busy street we see a man

is a street artist. The film made $5,308,618.2 and was released in 2010. The opening of the
documentary took footage from street art films that were made all around the world. The film is
exciting to watch, because of the interesting insight that it offers into the world of street art.
Watching the underground artists, the meaning street art has for them and their passion was

The art that hangs in museums, can only be purchased or the people can buy a poster of it. The film
starts the way it does, because it want to show people, how passionate people are about street art,
and it is not just the United Kingdom, but the whole world where street artists spread the art. The
three sequences which are important in the film, is firstly, the montage that the film starts with. It is
important because it shows how beautiful street art makes a street look. Secondly, the story of an
immigrant who follows street artists, films their work, and end up becoming an artist himself.
Thirdly, the same artists then copies the art of Banksy, which is important to show the authenticity
of street art. Sound is used in the film very strategically; for example, when the French immigrant is
introduced in the film, the background plays traditional accordion. The street artists paint the walls
usually at night, so there are scenes with dim lights, only street lights visible. The end is marked by
a montage, where Guetta says that time will tell whether he is a real artist or not. This is central to
the issue of the film, which is about authentic

Grant Wood Essay
Grant Wood
I recently took a trip to the Jocelyn Art Museum. There they had many great painting in the
permanent art collection. One that caught my eye, which I had seen many times before, but never
knew any thing about, was a painting called Stone City, Iowa , which was created by Grant Wood in
1930. This painting is oil on wood panel and is
30 ¼ X 40 inches.
Grant Wood is a famous philosopher who was born in February in the year 1891 in Anamosa, Iowa.
Wood was born to Quaker parents on a small farm. This experience would be the basis of his iconic
images of small–town plain folk and verdant Midwestern vistas. He later moved to Cedar Rapids
after the death of his father in 1901. He first studied at the Minneapolis ... Show more content on

What they shared, among themselves and among other American Scene painters, was a humble,
antimodernist style and a fondness for depicting everyday life. However, their rural conservatism
put them at odds with the urban and leftist Social Realists of the same era.
The three best–known regionalists were Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Grant Wood.
With Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry, who died prematurely in 1946, Wood represented
the painters of "The American Scene" also known as the school of Regional American Landscape.
These artists represented rural life in the U.S in the tradition of European masters.
They enjoyed success in 1930 during the Great Depression when the public found some intellectual
and moral comfort during troubled times. Wood was trying to induce the birth of a true American
national art. He even wrote a manifesto, "Revolt against the City" in 1935 calling for a renaissance
of American art which he found too dependent on European art, especially French art notably in the
field of abstract painting. He wanted to regroup regional schools in order to develop a new form of
realistic painting.
Success came late for Wood who spent his life in his native Iowa where he found his inspiration and
subjects. At the start of his career he was influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and then
painted in a manner that could be compared to those of John Sloan, Edward Hopper, Edouard
Vuillard or

An Analysis Of Edward Hopper's Nighthawks
To explain, Nighthawks was painted in 1942, right after the U.S. entered World War II. At the time,
the war dominated the culture that Americans lived in, and everything was focused on supporting
the war effort. Necessities such as food or clothing were rationed for troops, and neighborhood–
wide drives were held to collect scrap metal. There were advertisements urging people to work for
the patriotic good, and newsreels about battles were shown in theaters before movies (The U.S.
Home Front During World War II). This atmosphere of intense focus and dedication was the result
of fear. The bombing of Pearl Harbor, which was what prompted the U.S. to become involved in the
war, was "an invasion of the American consciousness," (Erenberg and Hirsch). ... Show more

His artistic career began as he studied at the Correspondence School of Illustrating in New York
City and then at the New York School of Art. While he initially started with learning about
illustration, he eventually began to study painting and drawing (Levin, Hopper). At the New York
School of Art, he was taught by William Merritt Chase, an Impressionist painter, and with Robert
Henri, who was a realist (Murphy). Perhaps being exposed to their teachings were what influenced
the approach that Hopper took to his artwork He traveled often to many places across Europe, but as
mentioned before, Paris was a particular favorite of his. He married Jo in 1923, and she became a
huge part of his artistic process. She kept detailed records of his pieces and often modeled for them;
in fact, she was the one who posed for the woman in Nighthawks (Levin, Edward Hopper: An
Intimate Biography, 349). Hopper struggled as an artist until the 1920s; his work was mostly
ignored and unrecognized, and had to make the majority of his sales from etching and prints. He
finally achieved critical success after his second one–man show, "Recent Watercolors by Edward
Hopper," in which every single painting was sold (Troyen, 63–64). From there, Hopper began to
achieve national exposure and critical acclaim. His artwork was exhibited in many galleries and

The entire statuette is bronze, from the top of the crown, to the baby in her hand, down to slab her
feet is resting on. The woman, Isis, is shown to be a crowned slim mother wearing a close fitting

Both knees closed together. Wearing a uraeus crown with a solar disk placed between two cow
horns. The uraeus on her forehead frame a vulture's head whose pelt (round object) sits atop the wig

Descriptive Essay: The Art Institute Of Chicago
The Art Institute of Chicago that I had known months ago was completely different. The lions
looked friendly, the trees looked, and the entrance was covered with plants. This was probably
because they decorated the building for the holidays. The lions had giant wreaths around their head
with a red bow and the trees had beautiful christmas lights wrapped around them, and the entrance
had little wreaths on the doors. The only thing that looked terrifying was the long line to get in.
Luckily, Mr. I–Am–So–Smart, to some he is also referred to as Dad, bought the tickets online while
we were standing in the line! Smiling, we then walked past the hundreds of people standing in line
and went straight through the doors and to the ticket scanners. Getting there was quite the
excitement. If you have ever driven to chicago you might notice a small set of lanes next to you
often called the express lane. The express lane opens and closes for the various side. We drove onto
the expressway I believe the exact second the sign changed at the entrance and the bar went up. We
cruised past all of the cars lined up in traffic while laughing amongst ourselves until we finally made
it to The Art Institute of Chicago. From there on, it was all amazement and awe.

The Impressionistic Style Of Monet
Monet is a master of the impressionist advancement that rose during the nineteenth century. His
elegant style and vigilant brush strokes tested the structure and set up guidelines of contemporary
workmanship. Unmistakably, in any case, his work was subject to much examination and criticism
from his partners. No ifs ands or buts, Monet's style, as depicted in his delineation titled Water
Lillies, was not a sudden jump forward; rather, it was a transformative strategy of reliable
progression. Nevertheless, it is basic to research to what degree Monet changed his style every

Commenting on John Rewald's prelude that "When a skilled worker grasps his work, certain optical
conditions acquaint themselves with him by which he is bound. Not everything is possible at all
conditions," Millard fought that Monet essentially yielded certain parts of each style and showed the
masterpiece with the objective that it held the positive qualities of both. Firstly, the start that not
everything is possible fundamentally infers that it is hard to join both legitimacy and clear brush
strokes of impressionism into a lone piece of workmanship. Since honest to goodness scenes are
stacked with correct purposes of enthusiasm, keeping up that genuineness would not be conceivable.
This is the right test that Monet was gone up against with. Furthermore, Monet did not simply pick a
style and tail everything through his calling as Bouguereau did with set up craftsmanship; rather, he
found a work around. His test styles influenced future painting styles, for instance, Cubism as

The Nighthawks: Painting Analysis
The painting The Nighthawks is a painting I personally like because of its use of colour, form and
value. The elements of design, form is used to give a three dimensional feeling about the people
inside the shop and the shop itself. When you look at this painting you can get this feeling that the
people and the shop are three dimensional. When the elements of design form, is used in this
painting, to me, it looks more realistic and gives me the feeling that the people are actually there and
alive which is one reason why I really like this painting. This painting also uses colour to make the
painting look bright even though the setting is in the night time. They use a light colour to show that
the shop is open even though it is night. Some people

Painting Analysis : Claude Monet
Claude Monet, a french painter, painted the Church at Varengeville, Grey Weather, in the year 1882,
in the midst of his artistic career. Varengeville–sur–Mer is a small commune in the Seine–Maritime
of the north–western region in France. The painting is oil paint on a canvas about 25 by 32 inches,
and hangs directly on the wall, in a simple ornate frame. The work's current location is in the Speed
Art Museum, in Louisville, KY. The artwork is hung at a horizontal orientation. In the upper left
corner of the painting, sits a small church, where the hazy sky peaks out and radiates light from
being the building. To the left of the church rests a body of water with several small sail boats. In
the foreground there are two trees emerging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Church at Varengeville demonstrates Monet's talent and ability to portray the light and shadows in
inherent means. The painting gets progressively darker as the eye moves from the top to the bottom.
It is difficult to determine where the light source is coming from. The entire sky is lit up and the
grassy hill. Monet was intensely preoccupied with capturing nature and light. The impressionists
were very concerned with light. They would use their colorful strokes to emulate light and the
reflection of light. One of the most interesting things about this piece is the complexity. At first
glance the painting looks monotone and very dull and the uniform use of cool colors are very
calming. However, upon further and closer inspection, the vibrant, unmixed hues of the colors
become apparent. The grassy land not only incorporates dull and dark greens hues, but also, bright
greens, blues, and burnt oranges. Also, the pale sky consists of yellows pinks and blues, all very
pastel and softly blended. In contrast to the sky and land, the ocean is composed of very lineare
brushstrokes consisting of blue and green. Throughout the composition, Monet layered the colors
creating a sense of depth and space. The trees are in the front of the landscape and they force the eye
to move back in space. The church and the water are much smaller than the tree and show and
accurate understanding of scale. The technique in which Monet

Edward Hopper Painted The Night Hawks
In 1942, American artist Edward Hopper painted The Night Hawks. This oil painting, is a 33 1/8th
in. x 60 in. piece. Hopper used oil paint on canvas, to create this piece. Currently this piece is
located at the Art Institute of Chicago. In The Night Hawks, a city diner is depicted sometime at
night. The buildings and diner design, are consistent with a city setting. Within the diner, there are 4
people present. Three of these people appear to be customers, while the other is working at the
diner. There are three men present in the picture, and one woman. Due to the clothes they are
wearing, we know that this diner is set sometime before 1960. After looking at the painting, I
believe that this is either an exact depiction of a real–life diner, or the painting was inspired by a
real–life diner. Within this painting, there are many different elements of design that Hopper uses to
create this scene. The first element of design within this painting is, the use of light and shadows.
Hopper uses light and shadows, to create the visual of nighttime within the painting. Within the
restaurant, very bright colors are used to create the walls. Using light colors in this way, makes it
appear as if the walls of the diner are reflecting light. In addition, the countertop within the diner
appears to be glossy, and has reflections in it. This effect also aids in making the illusion of light
within the diner. Outside of the dinner, light can be seen on the buildings across the street. This

Here is the kicker: that is the niche of the restaurant! 'Roasting' customers who come through the
door is what attracts hundreds of thousands of them to the restaurant every year. There have been
many celebrities who visited this place just to 'roast' the employees back. Of course, this is not for
the faint of hearts, so it is best for you to go to the Vienna Beef Chicago Style Hot Dog stand for a
hickory smoked hot dog smothered in relish, celery sauce, large pickles, slices of tomatoes, and
jalapenos pepper stuck between a poppy seed bun for a blast of authentic flavor. And what is best of
all, the employees won't talk crazy to you!
18. Ask For A Pop Instead of A Soda
You will quickly notice that people use the words "pop" to mean "soda" around the the city. When
someone says, "buy me a pop" it means buy them a soft drink. If you really want to fit in with the
Chicago culture, ask for a pop instead of a soda when ordering at a restaurant.

Nighthawks By Edward Hopper Analysis
Nighthawks Displayed at the Art Institute of Chicago is Nighthawks, a 1942 oil painting by Edward
Hopper. The subject of Hopper's painting is an empty restaurant. The painting depicts a late night
scene. Inside the restaurant there are three customers and one worker. Many seats are left open. The
restaurant's light is all that illuminates the area. The outside streets and back buildings are dark. The
image leaves the viewer wondering what was Hopper's message? In this paper, I will show that
Hopper was trying to convey the message of loneliness the average person deals with using the
element and principle of design. Hopper use of space with the element of design creates the illusion
of loneliness. For example, the painting displays an open area. There are empty streets, large
windows, and many empty seats between the one person. There is also the use of light in the
restaurant that illuminates out just to the front of the street gives the look of space. The light in the
restaurant makes it look like the viewer is standing outside the building looking inside. Behind the
restaurant there are darker doorways and windows of other buildings. The depth of the space is
unknown due to the darkness. I feel that the darkness in the space can show the sadness or
uncertainty. Another element of design is color in this painting. The colors are a good mixture of
bright and dark hues. A good contrast to relay a message in his painting. The men are in black. The
color can

My Personality Group Through Human Metrics
Over the course of this assignment; I have discovered much about myself. Likewise, I probably
would not have learned this much about myself or my career, had I not taken this course. Such as
how I have found my personality group through Human metrics; which presented that I was within
the INFJ grouping (Jung, 1998). I was also able to learn much more about the career that I may be
pursuing in the future, as well as the people in the field similar to it. The Jungian personality test
showed that my personality type, the INFP, is a mediator (Jung, 1998). The website claims that
INFJs are idealistic, future–oriented, as well as creative. The possible careers listed on the website
are psychologists, artists, and child care/ teachers (BSM, 2016). These results show some correlation
to my own personality, as I am aspiring to be an artist. I am also very future–oriented and I would
like to perceive myself as being rather creative. Another trait that I relate with would be how INFJs
would typically value deep and authentic relationships with others. I enjoy harmony with others and
predictable schedules. Such an example would be how I tend to eat dinner with friends around 6pm
every night and do homework afterwards, as well as have the classes at the appropriate times
throughout the week. The consistency of the schedule allows me to plan ahead without feeling too
much stress, which may result in some errors along the way. As a child, I was always fascinated

I like the fact that he takes cheap objects that he finds and uses them to create these wonderful art
pieces. When I was looking at Jeff Koons artworks, I thought back to our tutorial
discussions/debates where we were arguing back and forth about what is art and what is not art.
Many people believe that Jeff Koons artwork is not considered art, however I believe that his
artworks are considered art because its his own creation and it is a new kind art that we have not
seen much of. From our lecture, Professor Brandon Vickerd talked a little about Jeff Koons, and he
stated that "Some people would look at his work as pioneering and of major art–historical
importance, while others view his work as kitsch: crass and based on cynical self–merchandising."
(Taken from PowerPoint). By researching this artist, I found that basically anything could be
considered art as long as you make it your own, original and make it look interesting.

My Visit At The Huntington Museum Of Art
The first thing I noticed at the Huntington Museum of Art was how quiet and empty it was. This was
not displeasing however––quite the opposite in fact. The atmosphere was perfect for contemplation
and thought, which is exactly what I want in a museum. I was still surprised of course; my visit to
the Art Institute of Chicago had been very different. Unlike in Huntington, Chicago's museum was
packed to the brim, and the people within it practically shouting just to be heard. It is very easy to
decide which one I liked more, in terms of surroundings anyway. As I walked along, my footsteps
echoing, I could not help but feel like there was something missing. The art was perfectly fine, but
there was a lack of liveliness to the place, something that Chicago had in spades. I remember
noticing that the art only had names, and no descriptions. This was something I disliked extremely.
It is nice to look at images I suppose, but I want some history. I want the time period, and a
description of the artist, two things that play a huge role in what a painting is actually about. I felt
like I should just naturally understand what each piece of art was trying to describe to me, which
was an irritating feeling.
It only took me about twenty minutes to go through the entire museum. Nothing really drew me in,
except for a couple of pieces. This was entirely different from my visit to the Art Institute of
Chicago. There, almost everything drew me in. All the paintings, and especially some of

My Visit At The Art Institute Of Chicago
During my visit at the Art Institute of Chicago this quarter, a popular and interesting piece of
artwork that spoke to me in ways that no other artwork did was the, "Tarquin and Lucretia" by
Tintoretto or the artist known as Jacopo Robusti. Tintoretto is also known as the one of the most
well–known Italian Renaissance artists and became interested in painting at a very young age. This
specific piece of artwork was originally created by Tintoretto during 1578 through 1580 and is an oil
painting on a canvas. It has approximate size measurements of 68' 7/8" by 59' 5/8" and is classified
as an Italian work of art. This painting takes place in ancient Roman times where the figure that is
somewhat laying down represents Lucretia, who is the wife of an honest man named Lucius
Tarquinius Collatinus ("Stories and Histories – The Rape of Lucretia", 2016). The other figure that
is directly behind Lucretia is Sextus Tarquinius or Tarquin, who is her rapist and the son of a
dictatorial Roman king named Lucius Tarquinius Superbus. Subsequently after her rape, Lucretia
tells her husband and father about the incident. In order to save herself from the guilt and
misrepresentation of her reputation, she stabs herself to death ("Stories and Histories – The Rape of
Lucretia", 2016). In the article titled, "Illicit Arousal: The Erotic Subtext of Tintoretto 's Tarquin and
Lucretia" within The Journal of the History of Art by Sabrina DeTurk, it is stated that Lucretia is

The African Exhibit At The Art Institute Of Chicago
The African exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago is difficult to find. At the end of a shotgun wing
consisting of Japanese, Korean, and other East Asian art, and beyond Native American art, sits the
one–room gallery for African art. Here, most of the objects could be considered fashions, tools, or
domestic objects. There is a bizarre absence of chronology, and the objects seem too similar to
speak for Africa at large– as if everything on display arose from the same historical situation and
from the same experimental sampling pool. Among this ad hoc assortment of characters, one would

This pattern continues on all sides of the box with the metalwork even making up the hasp on the
front and the hinges of the box's lid on the plain, back panel. Even the interior radiates with
ornamentation. The coppery leather lining of the jewelry box is painted with reds, greens, purples,
and yellows. The geometry of the pattern is vastly different than the exterior. It hosts a field of
angular forms adjoined to their neighbors with repetitious outlines of various colors. Some of these
forms contain even more detail. One can pick out latticing, hatching, cross–hatching, and stippling
within these shapes. The detail work creates a contrast between interior and exterior, as the artistic
production between the spaces is vastly different. It seems like these boxes are made by group
effort. Functionally, the jewelry box needs further examination for any comprehension. Its bulky
size makes sense in conjunction with the many surrounding jewelry pieces, which are elaborate,
heavily ornamented, and chunky. Because the back of the chest was plain and so unlike the rest, it
must have been hidden from sight. This could very well mean that the box was fixed in location,
like furniture. Similarly, by understanding that jewelry boxes were used as dowry or sometimes as a
gift from bride to groom, one can also infer the centrality of the box to the culture. In the United
States it is common to receive dinnerware and other

Analysis Of Nighthawks By Edward Hopper
Nighthawks by Edward Hopper is one of my all–time favorite paintings, and has been a painting I

This is an astonishing painting, not only in the sense of it being beautiful art, but because this is a

Edward Hopper expressed his love for art early in his life and was determined to make something
out of himself in the field of art:
Edward Hopper was born in Nyack, New York, a town located on the west side of the Hudson
River, to a middle–class family that encouraged his artistic abilities. After graduating from high
school, he studied briefly at the Correspondence School of Illustrating in New York City (1899–

Edward Hopper was a quiet person but his art speaks louder that his words. His paintings are
famous because they are mysterious and his scenes don't seem to be complete. His paintings leave
the viewer with questions which makes his painting even more interesting. Hopper started sketching
and drawing at a very young age. Hopper has struggled throughout his career but in the end, he's
made it to where he is now. When Hopper was young he loved anything to do with art. He was
extremely excited when he got a blackboard one Christmas. He loved how he could draw anything,
erase it, and draw a brand new picture. When he became older he had a pencil and paper everywhere
he went. He loved to observe people but he watched them in a natural habitat ... Show more content

He also visited Belgium, England, Germany, and France. He even stayed with a french family when
he was in Paris. When he wasn't traveling over to Europe he lived in an apartment in Greenwich
which he moved into in 1913. Hopper lived here for the rest of his life. He hated having to work and
paint for other businesses but that's what he had to do to keep his apartment. Luckily for him, he
was 43 years old when he had enough money to quit the job and focus on his paintings more. Most
artists don't immediately get recognized and in Hopper's case, the first painting he ever sold was in
1911. The painting was call Sailing and it sold for $250 or $4300 in today's money. It was also
exhibited at the famous Armory Show. The Armory show introduced American Art World to a new
kind of experimental art of Europe. Getting an invitation to this exhibit was a great honor. So this
was a pretty big deal for him. Sadly, after Sailing he didn't sell another painting for years. He did,
however, continue to work as an illustrator even though he didn't like it. Later, he traveled to
Monhegan, Maine and met Josephine Verstille Nivison. She was a former student of his who studied
under Henri as well. The two had been friends for quite a few years and then they got New York on
July 9, 1924. They were in fact opposites of each other Josephine or Jo was more outgoing and
spoke her thoughts, while Hopper was more soft spoken, quiet, and polite. "Sometimes talking with

An Analysis Of Edward Hopper's 'The Nighthawks'
Time can be a Deciding Factor "The Nighthawks", by Edward Hopper is a unique form of art for the
time period (1942) that it is based in because it is a very natural oil painting. Along with this piece
of art, there is another significant oil painting done by the artist Edouard Manet called, "Corner Of A
Cafe–Concert" (1880). These paintings both symbolize a restaurant setting during the time in which
they were created but in doing this they have different structures based on what was happening
around them during their time periods. Although both of these works of art represent a cafe setting,
the color schemes and use of brushwork is the number one clue that separates them from each other.
In Manet's painting, he uses much brighter colors to show that the time of day is likely in the mid–
afternoon. Hopper on the other hand uses a much darker palette to make the observer understand his
is set during the night, hence the title of the work. "The Nighthawks", has a much more realistic
approach because of the clarity of the figures and the crispness of his line work. The characters in
his work are easily distinguishable and are proportional. In Edouard's painting, he uses very obscure
brush strokes to create the figures shown. The foremost characters are visible but when you look
into the background, they become almost blurry. He does this to draw your attention to the front
most people. In 1920, the United States of America puts the 18th amendment into place. The

The main building of the Art Institute is constructed mostly of masonry, with few windows, and
feels very heavy and overpowering. Grand staircases and large columns dwarf visitors as they move
through the galleries. This is similar to the way the art in the space makes you feel: small,
unimportant, and sometimes even afraid. The Modern wing in constructed of steel and glass, and is
very open and bright (except when intended not to be). The large north wall facing Millenium Park
is one large expanse of windows, letting in plenty of indirect sunlight, and opening the gallery to the
park. The space feels very light, in both senses of the word. As with the old building, the art feels
similar to the space in that it is more open and less opressive. The two buildings also differ in the
way they interact with the city, since they have vastly differing neighbors. The main building is
centered on Adams street and faces the Loop, the busiest area of the city. Flanking the main entrance
are two large, bronze, lions that seem to protect the building from the city, while still allowing
visitors to enter and exit the museum. The new Modern Wing, however, faces Chicago's Millenium

building is trying to shut out the city to create a space for itself, the Modern Wing is opening itself

Van Gogh stares at guests with such solemn eyes that seem to be all colors at once. Claude Monet
takes you to the French country side that are covered in swaying pastures of yellow wildflowers and
haystacks. The relaxed posed of Renoir's nude female models shows the realistic ideas the
impressionism artists had for the future of art. They painted the true colors of the world around them
and present them to us as we pass through the hallways. There is a muffled quietness in the exhibit
as everyone observes the sound the paintings reflect as though trying to here the gentle breeze in
Monet's painting of water lilies. Everyone gathers to gaze at George Seurat's meticulous work that
covers an expansive wall which barely contains the impressive effort. Cameras flash trying to
capture the unique and awe–inspiring talent and dedication that made Seurat famous but none are
able. No one can truly capture the detail and dedication that all artists put into their work through
photos, you have to stand right in front of it to come

Hang A Hopper: Or Choose Some Cheery Art Instead
Many of Edward Hopper's painting's capture the feeling hopelessness and loneliness. That is
certainly a reflection of the culture in America at the time of The Great Depression, and the date–
stamp of Hotel Room (1931). The painting brings forth a feeling of sadness when you first lay eyes
on the woman. But it is not the woman alone that conjures these feelings. Hopper's dramatic lack of
color and light create the mood and emotion within many of his painting; a style which comes
through in Hotel Room. Coming off an era of some great impressionist, like Renoir or Monet,
Hopper's works are a direct contrast in style, technique, color and emotion. One can analyze that
through his use of colors, light and his depiction of the motionless woman, that this painting does
not represent a happy moment in that time. The woman is simply another object in the room he used
to play off his color palette, to convey a message to the viewer. By understanding what we are
looking at, we can decipher how colors, when used in the manor which they were meant to be
perceived, can evoke feelings sadness and depression. The colors he chose are depressing and sad.
Dark and drab yellow and greens with heavy dark shadows being cast on the floor and face of the
woman; a direct contrast to the bright white wall directly behind her. The woman sits at the edge of
her bed, hardly clothed and looking exasperated. Her bags remain unpacked, behind her scarf, the
only thing that even gives us a hint of color,

The crèche bodies are made from hemp and wire, the heads are molded out of terracotta with eyes made of glass, and the hands and feet are carved out of wood. Many of the figures in the crèche wear their original silk garments made in the royal silk factory in San Leucio. The painstaking details of the costumes are constructed of luxurious, rich fabrics such as damasks, silks, linens, and laces. One could tell the peasant figures because they wore simple clothes and had bare feet or sandals. They are wearing muted dirty looking clothing, but quite possibly even made out of paper. The wealthy and nobility wore regal royal colored robes, leather shoes and perhaps even a turban or headwear. Their costumes were quilted, embroidered using gold or silver thread, embellished with silk ribbons, and tiny colored glass beads. Some women were clothed in lace petticoats, elaborate bustles, and silk– lined dresses with metallic lace over–skirt. • 3. The Medium Of Art By Leonardo Da Vinci 's Mona Lisa Of all the creative mediums in existence, of which there are a plethora to discover, the medium of Art, although recognized by most as a legitimate creative medium, is one of the most controversial. However, in the subject of practical artwork, sculptures, paintings, and performance artworks, the idea of a definitive artwork is almost non–existent. Although there are artworks that exist, such as Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, which are known seemingly universally (Torov, 2011), there are few critics or viewers who can explain just what exactly constitutes it as a good artwork. This investigation appears to become universal to many other artworks, an argument that arises between technical mastery, motives, and meaning, if any at all. That is to say that interpretation battles against visual astonishment. However, although the visuals are by far the most striking part of almost any artwork, the first thing that most look for beyond the visual elements is the story being told within the visuals. It is for this reason that many war–time, or significant event paintings are remembered; it's well known, and is a story that is being told constantly through all mediums, within the realm of out, and outside that same realm. Untitled (Perfect Lovers) by Felix Gonzalez Torres Felix Gonzlaez Torres is known throughout the art world as being one of those most creative and unique artist, particularly for his instalment artworks, minimalistic style and the ability to create what he ... • 4. Compare And Contrast Monet And Monet Monet Oscar–Claude Monet was a famous French painter who was one of the main artists of the Impressionism movement. Monet was an artist who was obsessed with light. The Royal Academy of arts didn't accept his work but this was never a setback for him. He wanted to capture the change in light in every moment; hence this is the reason why he chose to paint different paintings of the same scenes. He used several canvases simultaneously so that he could capture light in each of his canvas. Hence his paintings, "Haystack 6/20", "Haystack 7/20", "Haystack 10/20", these are all paintings of the same place but Monet was successfully able to show the change of color of the sample place. Monet took only 2–3 hours to paint, in the previous movements, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Degas was fascinated by "accidental photography". One of his very famous painting is, "Carriage at the Races" which is a scene shown at the race track. The race is taking place in the back ground; a family is shown with a baby mother and the father. Degas is trying to show the action taking place in the background and the involvement of the family within themselves. However, the main focus of the painting that Degas has captured a photography image in his canvas. The first look at the painting shows that the whole painting is completely off center. The face of the horse is cut off, the ear of the horse is in the center and there is more background shown in the painting rather than the family portrait in the carriage. Similarly his paintings of the ballerina series, "The rehearsal on Stage", instead of showing the beautiful ballerinas, he captured the backstage image in his painting. The effect of photography, financers, producers, a teacher and ballerinas getting ready can be seen. • 5. Edward Hopper, An American Realist Painter Edward Hopper was an American realist painter born in 1882 in New York. After studying art and many journeys, he had trouble getting famous and put on the art world map. But finally, in 1933, a first installation is dedicated to him at the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York. His works are mainly inspired by his journeys, trips to different places and the solitude of the American in the twentieth century. Nighthawks is his most famous piece of art (Laura Herail, blog). After researching and looking at many of his paintings, this artwork portrays sadness and yet it is not a sad picture. It could be something enticing and yet charming about anonymous diners. The lack of domesticity offering a relief what can be the full comfort of home. It may be easier to give away to sadness here than in a cozy living room with wallpaper and framed pictures. Home often appears to have betrayed Hopper's characters, something has happened there that forces them out into the night and on to the road. The 24 hour diner is a sanctuary for those who for some reason or another have failed to find there place in the normal world of relationships or community. Hopper's ability to portray solitude comes from his own familiarity with it. He lead comfortable middle class childhood as a son of a merchant, yet inside Hopper often felt a little bit awkward like an outsider. Hoping for a while to be an artist and yet his parents insisted he trains in commercial art to keep afloat financially. He hated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Georges Seurat 's A Sunday Morning On The Island Of La... Three weeks ago I visited the Art Institute of Chicago. It was established in 1879 and has since expanded its collection to approximately three hundred thousand works. Attracting over one and a half million visitors annually, it is one of the largest art museums in the United States. The reason I chose this site is that I read that it displayed Georges Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and I wanted to see it in person because it is so iconic. While at the Art Institute of Chicago, I spent most of my time in "The Elizabeth Hammond Stickney Gallery". There were three pieces in this gallery: Saint Michael and the Devil, The Birth of Saint John the Baptist, and Saint George Killing the Dragon. Each piece was made in the Renaissance period in Europe in the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries. I believe the main reason these pieces are grouped together is that they all contain a depiction of a saint. Another reason for this arrangement is that all these paintings all represent the survival of holy figures and the death of the evil ones. This is shown in each piece by either a saint killing an evil creature or the birth of a holy saint. The piece I will analyze from the previously mentioned gallery is Saint George Killing the Dragon by Bernat Martorell which was made in 1434/35. This piece is a painting made on a support of panel with a media of tempera and stucco. The main subject of the painting is a man wearing armor on a white horse. The man on the ... • 8. Abstract Expressionism In Modern Society During the time of the 19th and early 20th century, became a time known as modern society, known for its modernity and time of modernism. During this time, artists were flourishing and growing into their own skin, pushing the limits in art, never seen before. This was a time where society became dominated by industrialization, modernization around civilization. The focus became more on machine–age life than ever before. But with machine–age life came the city life, below the night– lights where new art forms developed. This was a time where the man by the name of Edward Hopper became apart of the spotlight. Hopper was considered a realist type of artist. His imagery of figures within urban settings goes well beyond their role as modern cityscapes, exposing the under layer of the human experience. Though he was considered a realist, his work was during a time between the World Wars. By considering the dramatic use of soft lighting, smallest action and representation of smaller spaces, Hopper led the way towards Abstract Expressionism. A hot topic during this time was discussion of work led by Willard Huntington Wright. Wright believed that, "art had principles of form and organization that could be rationally discussed and that it progressed toward a goal of purity" (p.16, Hills). Wright's work and analysis was known as being a formalist meaning, " modern art tends toward the elimination of all those accretions so beloved by the general – literature, drama, ... • 9. Nighthawks by Edward Hopper Nighthawks, was painted in 1942 by Edward Hopper (1882–1967) an artist who was known as "a great master in the ranks of America realists." (Levin, Gail) Hoppers paintings were first hung in "retrospective in 1933, Hopper played host just three years later to the first major show of surrealist art in New york." (Levin, Gail) Hopper grew up in Washington Square, and lived there for most of his life. " Hopper excelled in creating realistic pictures of clear–cut, sunlit streets and houses, often without figures." (Levin, Gail) "He offers a brand of realism not bound to reality, and the places he depicts are familiar and foreign, comfortable and disquieting," said the USA Times. The painting resides in the Art institute of Chicago. Nighthawks just like many of Hoppers paintings give a feeling of loneliness, and isolation as well as a feeling of darkness due to the dark hues. The picture leaves the viewer with thousands of words and interpretations with a third person view of an isolated man as he sits in a small parlor and ponders. The painting was created in 1942, which took place during the time of the great depression. Hopper frequently chose to give his paintings discreet and dark feelings. Dark hues were used to give a feeling of darkness contrasted with bright lights from inside the parlor. As well as using dark hues, Hopper blends these well with the red of the building in the back round as the last of the sunlight beams off the building. Hopper centers a man in ... Albright gave the painting to the Chicago Art Institute as a gift in 1977. The painting depicts the sadness of a once young and vibrant woman, facing the realities of getting old. Albright was known to be very meticulous in his detail. He was known to have used hundreds of different brushes for a project, some with as little as one hair on them for the finest details, such as the hair strands on Ida's comb. This is all evident in the texture of everything depicted in the painting, but particularly in the detail he paid to Ida's skin. The bulging shape of her legs and face depict far more than the effects of aging alone. They show the decay of one's body that is prepared to accept death. Albright was so deliberate in his painting, for example he would paint for roughly five hours a day, in that time he would only cover one half of a square inch. Once satisfied he would never return to that spot and make any changes (Hubbard). While everything else in the painting seems to signify death, or doom, the choice of lighting is interesting. It seems to be coming from above from the heavens giving her image a certain aura about her which might signify the possibility of redemption or salvation. The lighting also draws Ida out towards the viewer letting the viewer know that this is the main subject (Donnell). Albright was so attracted to the great painters of Northern Europe; he tried to emulate their work habits in every possible way. For example ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Les Grands Boulevard And La Grande Jatte Through my analysis and comparison of Les Grands Boulevard and La Grande Jatte I hope to convey to the reader that these two paintings, although painted in different styles, both illustrate the need to slow down and enjoy life. Les Grands Boulevards is a 20 1/2 x 25in. European oil on canvas painting created by Pierre–Auguste Renoir in 1875 during the impressionism movement ("Philadelphia Museum of Art"). The painting is currently housed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art ("Philadelphia Museum of Art"). A Sunday on La Grande Jatte is another European oil on canvas painting. Georges Seurat started this painting in 1884 during the post impressionism movement and completed it in 1886 ( "About This Artwork."). In 1889 Seurat made one final change to La Grande Jatte, restretching the canvas to 81 3/4 x 121 1/4in in order to add a painted border ( "About This Artwork."). The painting is now located at the Art Institute of Chicago ( "About This Artwork."). Renoir's use of blurred details, blended colors and optical effect of light and color in Les Grands Boulevard show a fleeting moment of contemporary life in Paris in 1875.The painting depicts one of the so called grands boulevard of Paris. Brought about by the industrial revolution, the boulevard was a newly restored and modernized urban setting at the time Renoir painted it. The three sequences which are important in the film, is firstly, the montage that the film starts with. It is important because it shows how beautiful street art makes a street look. Secondly, the story of an immigrant who follows street artists, films their work, and end up becoming an artist himself. Thirdly, the same artists then copies the art of Banksy, which is important to show the authenticity of street art. Sound is used in the film very strategically; for example, when the French immigrant is introduced in the film, the background plays traditional accordion. The street artists paint the walls usually at night, so there are scenes with dim lights, only street lights visible. One that caught my eye, which I had seen many times before, but never knew any thing about, was a painting called Stone City, Iowa , which was created by Grant Wood in 1930. This painting is oil on wood panel and is 30 ¼ X 40 inches. Grant Wood is a famous philosopher who was born in February in the year 1891 in Anamosa, Iowa. What they shared, among themselves and among other American Scene painters, was a humble, antimodernist style and a fondness for depicting everyday life. However, their rural conservatism put them at odds with the urban and leftist Social Realists of the same era. The three best–known regionalists were Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Grant Wood. With Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry, who died prematurely in 1946, Wood represented the painters of "The American Scene" also known as the school of Regional American Landscape. These artists represented rural life in the U.S in the tradition of European masters. They enjoyed success in 1930 during the Great Depression when the public found some intellectual and moral comfort during troubled times. Wood was trying to induce the birth of a true American national art. He even wrote a manifesto, "Revolt against the City" in 1935 calling for a renaissance of American art which he found too dependent on European art, especially French art notably in the field of abstract painting. He wanted to regroup regional schools in order to develop a new form of realistic painting. Success came late for Wood who spent his life in his native Iowa where he found his inspiration and subjects. At the time, the war dominated the culture that Americans lived in, and everything was focused on supporting the war effort. Necessities such as food or clothing were rationed for troops, and neighborhood– wide drives were held to collect scrap metal. There were advertisements urging people to work for the patriotic good, and newsreels about battles were shown in theaters before movies (The U.S. Home Front During World War II). This atmosphere of intense focus and dedication was the result of fear. The bombing of Pearl Harbor, which was what prompted the U.S. to become involved in the war, was "an invasion of the American consciousness," (Erenberg and Hirsch). ... Hopper struggled as an artist until the 1920s; his work was mostly ignored and unrecognized, and had to make the majority of his sales from etching and prints. He finally achieved critical success after his second one–man show, "Recent Watercolors by Edward Hopper," in which every single painting was sold (Troyen, 63–64). The lions looked friendly, the trees looked, and the entrance was covered with plants. This was probably because they decorated the building for the holidays. The lions had giant wreaths around their head with a red bow and the trees had beautiful christmas lights wrapped around them, and the entrance had little wreaths on the doors. The only thing that looked terrifying was the long line to get in. Luckily, Mr. I–Am–So–Smart, to some he is also referred to as Dad, bought the tickets online while we were standing in the line! Smiling, we then walked past the hundreds of people standing in line and went straight through the doors and to the ticket scanners. Getting there was quite the excitement. The impressionists were very concerned with light. They would use their colorful strokes to emulate light and the reflection of light. One of the most interesting things about this piece is the complexity. At first glance the painting looks monotone and very dull and the uniform use of cool colors are very calming. However, upon further and closer inspection, the vibrant, unmixed hues of the colors become apparent. The grassy land not only incorporates dull and dark greens hues, but also, bright greens, blues, and burnt oranges. Three of these people appear to be customers, while the other is working at the diner. There are three men present in the picture, and one woman. Due to the clothes they are wearing, we know that this diner is set sometime before 1960. After looking at the painting, I believe that this is either an exact depiction of a real–life diner, or the painting was inspired by a real–life diner. Within this painting, there are many different elements of design that Hopper uses to create this scene. The first element of design within this painting is, the use of light and shadows. Hopper uses light and shadows, to create the visual of nighttime within the painting. Within the restaurant, very bright colors are used to create the walls. Using light colors in this way, makes it appear as if the walls of the diner are reflecting light. In addition, the countertop within the diner appears to be glossy, and has reflections in it. The restaurant's light is all that illuminates the area. The outside streets and back buildings are dark. The image leaves the viewer wondering what was Hopper's message? • 30. My Visit At The Huntington Museum Of Art The first thing I noticed at the Huntington Museum of Art was how quiet and empty it was. This was not displeasing however––quite the opposite in fact. The atmosphere was perfect for contemplation and thought, which is exactly what I want in a museum. I was still surprised of course; my visit to the Art Institute of Chicago had been very different. Unlike in Huntington, Chicago's museum was packed to the brim, and the people within it practically shouting just to be heard. It is very easy to decide which one I liked more, in terms of surroundings anyway. As I walked along, my footsteps echoing, I could not help but feel like there was something missing. The art was perfectly fine, but there was a lack of liveliness to the place, something that Chicago had in spades. I remember noticing that the art only had names, and no descriptions. This was something I disliked extremely. It is nice to look at images I suppose, but I want some history. I want the time period, and a description of the artist, two things that play a huge role in what a painting is actually about. I felt like I should just naturally understand what each piece of art was trying to describe to me, which was an irritating feeling. It only took me about twenty minutes to go through the entire museum. Nothing really drew me in, except for a couple of pieces. This was entirely different from my visit to the Art Institute of Chicago. There, almost everything drew me in. All the paintings, and especially some of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. My Visit At The Art Institute Of Chicago During my visit at the Art Institute of Chicago this quarter, a popular and interesting piece of artwork that spoke to me in ways that no other artwork did was the, "Tarquin and Lucretia" by Tintoretto or the artist known as Jacopo Robusti. Tintoretto is also known as the one of the most well–known Italian Renaissance artists and became interested in painting at a very young age. This specific piece of artwork was originally created by Tintoretto during 1578 through 1580 and is an oil painting on a canvas. It has approximate size measurements of 68' 7/8" by 59' 5/8" and is classified as an Italian work of art. This painting takes place in ancient Roman times where the figure that is somewhat laying down represents Lucretia, who is the wife of an honest man named Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus ("Stories and Histories – The Rape of Lucretia", 2016). The other figure that is directly behind Lucretia is Sextus Tarquinius or Tarquin, who is her rapist and the son of a dictatorial Roman king named Lucius Tarquinius Superbus. Subsequently after her rape, Lucretia tells her husband and father about the incident. In order to save herself from the guilt and misrepresentation of her reputation, she stabs herself to death ("Stories and Histories – The Rape of Lucretia", 2016). In the article titled, "Illicit Arousal: The Erotic Subtext of Tintoretto 's Tarquin and Lucretia" within The Journal of the History of Art by Sabrina DeTurk, it is stated that Lucretia is seen to be "a moral ... • 32. The African Exhibit At The Art Institute Of Chicago The African exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago is difficult to find. At the end of a shotgun wing consisting of Japanese, Korean, and other East Asian art, and beyond Native American art, sits the one–room gallery for African art. Here, most of the objects could be considered fashions, tools, or domestic objects. There is a bizarre absence of chronology, and the objects seem too similar to speak for Africa at large– as if everything on display arose from the same historical situation and from the same experimental sampling pool. Among this ad hoc assortment of characters, one would find a chest. This pattern continues on all sides of the box with the metalwork even making up the hasp on the front and the hinges of the box's lid on the plain, back panel. Even the interior radiates with ornamentation. The coppery leather lining of the jewelry box is painted with reds, greens, purples, and yellows. The geometry of the pattern is vastly different than the exterior. It hosts a field of angular forms adjoined to their neighbors with repetitious outlines of various colors. Some of these forms contain even more detail. One can pick out latticing, hatching, cross–hatching, and stippling within these shapes. The detail work creates a contrast between interior and exterior, as the artistic production between the spaces is vastly different. It seems like these boxes are made by group effort. Functionally, the jewelry box needs further examination for any comprehension. Its bulky size makes sense in conjunction with the many surrounding jewelry pieces, which are elaborate, heavily ornamented, and chunky. Because the back of the chest was plain and so unlike the rest, it must have been hidden from sight. This could very well mean that the box was fixed in location, like furniture. Similarly, by understanding that jewelry boxes were used as dowry or sometimes as a gift from bride to groom, one can also infer the centrality of the box to the culture. In the United States it is common to receive dinnerware and other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Analysis Of Nighthawks By Edward Hopper Nighthawks by Edward Hopper is one of my all–time favorite paintings, and has been a painting I have enjoyed researching throughout my life because of how much I resonate with this painting. This is an astonishing painting, not only in the sense of it being beautiful art, but because this is a piece that is so significant and loved by so many people around the world. I would say that even if you have not ever seen the original painting, you have probably seen it reproduced in different ways in many different places. The world is bursting with all kinds of versions of this painting. All of these tributes are made because of how much this painting has resonated with the people who have seen it. The beautiful composition and the many well used elements in this painting have always intrigued and interested me. I think that Hopper created a piece that can truly resonate with so many different people. Edward Hopper expressed his love for art early in his life and was determined to make something out of himself in the field of art: Edward Hopper was born in Nyack, New York, a town located on the west side of the Hudson River, to a middle–class family that encouraged his artistic abilities. After graduating from high school, he studied briefly at the Correspondence School of Illustrating in New York City (1899– 1900), and then he enrolled in classes at the New York School of Art (1900–1906). In his shift from illustration to the fine arts, he studied with William Merritt Chase, a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Portrait Of Edward Hopper Edward Hopper was a quiet person but his art speaks louder that his words. His paintings are famous because they are mysterious and his scenes don't seem to be complete. His paintings leave the viewer with questions which makes his painting even more interesting. Hopper started sketching and drawing at a very young age. Hopper has struggled throughout his career but in the end, he's made it to where he is now. When Hopper was young he loved anything to do with art. He was extremely excited when he got a blackboard one Christmas. He loved how he could draw anything, erase it, and draw a brand new picture. When he became older he had a pencil and paper everywhere he went. He loved to observe people but he watched them in a natural habitat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When he wasn't traveling over to Europe he lived in an apartment in Greenwich which he moved into in 1913. Hopper lived here for the rest of his life. He hated having to work and paint for other businesses but that's what he had to do to keep his apartment. Luckily for him, he was 43 years old when he had enough money to quit the job and focus on his paintings more. Most artists don't immediately get recognized and in Hopper's case, the first painting he ever sold was in 1911. The painting was call Sailing and it sold for $250 or $4300 in today's money. It was also exhibited at the famous Armory Show. The Armory show introduced American Art World to a new kind of experimental art of Europe. Getting an invitation to this exhibit was a great honor. So this was a pretty big deal for him. Sadly, after Sailing he didn't sell another painting for years. He did, however, continue to work as an illustrator even though he didn't like it. Later, he traveled to Monhegan, Maine and met Josephine Verstille Nivison. She was a former student of his who studied under Henri as well. The two had been friends for quite a few years and then they got New York on July 9, 1924. They were in fact opposites of each other Josephine or Jo was more outgoing and spoke her thoughts, while Hopper was more soft spoken, quiet, and polite. "Sometimes talking with Eddie is ... • 35. An Analysis Of Edward Hopper's 'The Nighthawks' Time can be a Deciding Factor "The Nighthawks", by Edward Hopper is a unique form of art for the time period (1942) that it is based in because it is a very natural oil painting. Along with this piece of art, there is another significant oil painting done by the artist Edouard Manet called, "Corner Of A Cafe–Concert" (1880). These paintings both symbolize a restaurant setting during the time in which they were created but in doing this they have different structures based on what was happening around them during their time periods. Although both of these works of art represent a cafe setting, the color schemes and use of brushwork is the number one clue that separates them from each other. In Manet's painting, he uses much brighter colors to show that the time of day is likely in the mid– afternoon. Hopper on the other hand uses a much darker palette to make the observer understand his is set during the night, hence the title of the work. "The Nighthawks", has a much more realistic approach because of the clarity of the figures and the crispness of his line work. The characters in his work are easily distinguishable and are proportional. In Edouard's painting, he uses very obscure brush strokes to create the figures shown. The foremost characters are visible but when you look into the background, they become almost blurry. He does this to draw your attention to the front most people. The Art Institute of Chicago Essay The building at 111 South Michigan Avenue, home of the Art Institute of Chicago, was opened in 1893 as the World's Congress Auxiliary Building for the World's Columbian Exposition. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main building of the Art Institute is constructed mostly of masonry, with few windows, and feels very heavy and overpowering. Grand staircases and large columns dwarf visitors as they move through the galleries. This is similar to the way the art in the space makes you feel: small, unimportant, and sometimes even afraid. The Modern wing in constructed of steel and glass, and is very open and bright (except when intended not to be). The large north wall facing Millenium Park is one large expanse of windows, letting in plenty of indirect sunlight, and opening the gallery to the park. The space feels very light, in both senses of the word. As with the old building, the art feels similar to the space in that it is more open and less opressive. The two buildings also differ in the way they interact with the city, since they have vastly differing neighbors. The main building is centered on Adams street and faces the Loop, the busiest area of the city. Flanking the main entrance are two large, bronze, lions that seem to protect the building from the city, while still allowing visitors to enter and exit the museum. The new Modern Wing, however, faces Chicago's Millenium Park. The face of the building along the park side is a large face of windows. So, while the old building is trying to shut out the city to create a space for itself, the Modern Wing is opening itself up to let the park ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. Hang A Hopper: Or Choose Some Cheery Art Instead Many of Edward Hopper's painting's capture the feeling hopelessness and loneliness. That is certainly a reflection of the culture in America at the time of The Great Depression, and the date– stamp of Hotel Room (1931). The painting brings forth a feeling of sadness when you first lay eyes on the woman. But it is not the woman alone that conjures these feelings. Hopper's dramatic lack of color and light create the mood and emotion within many of his painting; a style which comes through in Hotel Room. Coming off an era of some great impressionist, like Renoir or Monet, Hopper's works are a direct contrast in style, technique, color and emotion. One can analyze that through his use of colors, light and his depiction of the motionless woman, that this painting does not represent a happy moment in that time. The woman is simply another object in the room he used to play off his color palette, to convey a message to the viewer. By understanding what we are looking at, we can decipher how colors, when used in the manor which they were meant to be perceived, can evoke feelings sadness and depression. The colors he chose are depressing and sad. Dark and drab yellow and greens with heavy dark shadows being cast on the floor and face of the woman; a direct contrast to the bright white wall directly behind her. The woman sits at the edge of her bed, hardly clothed and looking exasperated. Her bags remain unpacked, behind her scarf, the only thing that even gives us a hint of color, ...
