Arnica, a plant in the Asteraceae family with yellow tubular flowers and dark green leaves, has been used medicinally to relieve pain. It can be used as a gargle for sore throats, applied as a poultice for bruises and contusions, and taken internally for its anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties to relieve hemorrhoid pain. Arnica has also been used externally for varicose veins and internally in low doses for heart failure and cardiac vasodilation as well as for rheumatism pains and preventing tumors.
