Editor's Notes

  1. With increasing demands on our time and reduced staffing we need to find ways to maximise our impact and to make the most of technology. Active learning has been identified as a more effective way of teaching students, particularly within library literature (e.g. Walsh & Inala, 2010; Lorenzen, 2001), but it can be hard to incorporate into large group teaching. Often when it is incorporated it takes the form of multiple choice questions and use of ‘clickers’. In the context of Bloom’s Taxonomy, these forms of formative assessment promote lower levels of learning, such as the ability to recall previously learnt information. The purpose of these exercises is to move towards higher levels of learning, such as the application of knowledge, whilst still being easy to incorporate into a lecture format with several hundred students.
  2. The material is created using Articulate 360, e-learning development software. Articulate 360 has various modules that do different things, such as Rise, which is online course creation software, and Quizmaker, which creates more complicated interactive quizzes and activities. The interactive exercises for all topics were created using Quizmaker and although they are intended to be embedded within e-learning courses they can be standalone.   3. The statements are a definition, one advantage and one disadvantage for each source of information. This leads to a discussion of the relative values of different sources of information and in what contexts students might need to use them, in order to promote analysis and synthesis of the information.
  4. Due to demands on our time and large cohorts we are discussing providing material that academic staff can incorporate into their own teaching rather than us running workshops and lectures within a module. The exercises have the potential to be used in these ways as they provide a ready made way for staff to increase interactivity in their own teaching. We are also working on creating updated and comprehensive material on all aspects of critical thinking and I will create new exercises and e-learning tutorials that will feed into this. I also hope to create material relating to literature searching.
