2020!

• UAC sends an electronic “postcard” two weeks out if they
haven’t completed the worksheet
24. BRIEF OVERVIEW OF PRE-ORIENTATION MATERIALS
• Video Modules
• Students will learn…
• What is advising at Carolina?
• What should I do to prepare
for advising?
• Where does my prior credit
count?
• Worksheet
• Students will fill out…
• Demographic information
(including preferred name and
pronouns)
• Details about their major
choice and commitment**
• Placement test results and
prior credit
29. DEGREE WORKS
• Advised course schedules for Fall 2022 should be placed into
Degree Works in either the Notes or Planner
• If another advisor provides the advisement but the you are
inputting information into Degree Works, please indicate
who advised the student
• You are encouraged to freeze a DegreeWorks Audit at the
time of summer advisement. This will provide a record of
the credit on the student’s record at the time of advisement.
30. NAVIGATE
• Use “Add a Note to This Student” to record what you normally
would in Navigate (less content than a 30-minute advising
appointment – that’s ok!)
• Use continued notes as normal through summer for
substantiative email exchanges, form uploads, etc.
• SCHC advisement forms will be attached in Navigate notes
31. RE-ADVISEMENT
• Update Degreeworks if a student is re-advised
• Be broad where you can:
• “MATH 111 or MATH 122 (depending on MPT retake)”
• “SPAN 121, 122, 209, or 210 (appropriate Spanish course
depending on FLPT)”
• “MATH 142 (will need to be readvised if AP score is not 3 or
better)”
• “GSS Carolina Core”
• Continue to log continued conversations in Navigate
32. SPECIAL POPULATIONS
• South Carolina Honors College
• Will be advised via Teams throughout May and registered for a full fall
schedule
• SCHC representatives will remove advising holds for their students (summer
process only)
• Communicate with SCHC advisor if you have questions (contact info to come)
• Opportunity Scholars Program
• Will be advised by OSP advisors at Orientation – OSP advisors will lift holds
• List will be sent to advisors each session to review course registration of
these students for degree applicable credit
33. SPECIAL POPULATIONS CONT.
• Jump Start
• Summer start transfer students in specific majors
• Coordinated course offerings with On Your Time in summer sessions
• These students will attend the May 26th Orientation session and it will
be noted in Navigate that they are part of the Jump Start program
• Early transfer advising
• Fall admit transfer students who have elected to be advised and
register prior to attending Orientation
• They will still attend a transfer Orientation day
• Amanda Shores and Marcus Bell (EA) will be these students point of
contact if they have questions during their Orientation session
34. MAJOR CHANGE POST-ORIENTATION
• Students cannot change their major on Day 2 of
Orientation.
• Students can contact Undergraduate Admissions to
request the change of major or make the change in their
admissions portal if the desired major is available
• DMSB and College of Nursing are not accepting changes
• Changes are processed by Undergraduate Admissions
through the add/drop date.
• Wednesday, August 24 at 11:59 p.m.
35. MATH PLACEMENT TEST OUTREACH
• If you had a workflow that worked for you – do that!
• Use VZ to identify students
• Potentially reach out 1 week before their Orientation
• Can come from the UAA or a central college contact (admin, front
desk, etc)
• Messaging:
• Need to take the test
• Need to RE-take the test
• Need to take the CORRECT test
37. COURSE NEEDS PROCESS
As course needs become apparent…
• Mike sends out a form through the UAA Listserv
• Colleges/departments identify who completes the form
• Seat needs are requested in:
• Math
• Statistics
• Chemistry
• Biology
• Foreign Language
• Additional seat requests (both inside and outside the College of Arts and Sciences) will
also be monitored.
38. ADVISOR CONSIDERATIONS
• Students’ placement test scores (math and foreign language)
when available and any prior academic work on their record
• Curriculum options
• For example, a Biology student must enroll in either BIOL 101/101L or
BIOL 102/102L in the fall; however, advisors could advise the student
broadly for a GHS requirement
• Course Needs Teams Channel
