Paul writes a letter to Philemon, a faithful Christian, thanking him for his faithfulness and asking him to accept Philemon's runaway slave, Onesimus, back as a brother. Paul praises Philemon for being a faithful family man and worker for the Lord who shows love for others. He prays that Philemon will continue in this faithfulness by welcoming Onesimus back charitably. The letter encourages Christians to express gratitude for those in their lives who help them and to live faithfully as examples for others.

New Testament Survey - no.22: Paul - Letter to PhilemonClive Ashby
As part of the New Testament Survey Course, Session 22 provides an overview of the personal letter of the Apostle Paul to a fellow believer, Philemon. This is one of the prison letters of Paul, written from his imprisonment in Rome. Though a very short letter, its message on forgiveness, reconciliation and equality within the community of Christ is a very powerful message for our time. (Course taught at Harare Theological College - 2016).
Sermon by Mike Smith... Our worship to God must be according to God's standards. We must work on our attitude of gratitude towards God always including our worship to Jehovah.

A verse by verse commentary on Philemon dealing with Paul writing to him to accept back into his fellowship the slave Onesimus who is now a son of Paul and a brother in Christ to him. It is a plea for forgiveness and acceptance.Paul will gladly pay anything it cost to take him back, and Paul says prepare him a room for he is also coming back.
This final message in the Hard Conversation series focuses on Paul's hard conversation with his friend Philemon, whom he challenges to "pay it forward" by showing grace and Christian brotherhood to his run-away slave, Onessimus. Paul prepares Philemon for this challenge and carefully makes the case for one of the most radical acts of forgiveness in the Bible.

Mt 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Mk 16:15 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
Act 1:8 "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
Mt 13:15 For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.'
Tit 2:11-14 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
Act 20:35 "I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive."
Rom 8:5-8 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Rom 12:1 I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
Act 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Heb 2:3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him.
Jn 12:42-43 Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
Col 3:1-2 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Mt 17:20 So Jesus said to them, "Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

3. Appreciation & Praise for
Philemon!
Phile.1:1-3 Paul, a prisoner of Christ
Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To
Philemon our beloved friend and
fellow laborer, to the beloved Apphia,
Archippus our fellow soldier, and to
the church in your house: Grace to
you and peace from God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ.
4. Today we will be looking at the
“need” for us to be thankful for
those in our lives!
▪ Paul writes to a brother in Christ encouraging,
and thanking him for his faithfulness, and then
asking him to remain faithful by accepting his
run away slave back as a brother!
▪ Paul is thankful & appreciative for Philemon
and his faithfulness to Jesus!
▪ Paul writes encouraging him to maintain this
faithfulness!
5. Sometimes we get so caught up in our
own lives that we forget to be thankful for
the people that help us every day!
▪ Paul may have been writing to Philemon,
but the message here is equally for us!
▪ We need to always remember to “show”
gratitude & appreciation to those God has
placed in our lives!
▪ We are to have an attitude of gratitude
first for God and then for others!
6. I. Philemon was a Family Man!
(Phile. 1:1-3)
▪ There are six names within two verses 1,2!
▸Verse one “Paul, Christ Jesus & Timothy”
▸Verse two “Philemon, Apphia & Archippus”
▪ Many believe the three Paul mentioned in verse two
are related!
▸Primarily Philemon, then Apphia thought to be either
his wife or mother, and then Archippus thought to be
his son or father.
– Col 4:17 And say to Archippus, "Take heed to the
ministry which you have received in the Lord, that
you may fulfill it."
7. “Paul a prisoner for Christ Jesus”
▪ Paul is in prison at the time of writing this letter
and yet he doesn’t call himself a prisoner of
Rome, but a prisoner of Jesus!
▪ His witness for Christ even in prison made him a
prisoner for the cause of Christ!
▸1 Cor. 7:22 For he who is called in the Lord
while a slave is the Lord's freedman. Likewise
he who is called while free is Christ's slave.
▪ Eph. & Col. “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ”
Phil. “Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus
Christ”
8. “Philemon our beloved fellow
worker!”
▪ Philemon and his family were indeed
“workers for the Lord!”
▸ Archippus is not only a worker, but
he is called a “fellow soldier!” (Cf. Col.
4:17)
▪ The salutation which is common in
many of Paul’s writings is used here,
“Grace to you and peace from God!”
9. II. Philemon was a Faithful Man!
(Phile. 1:4-5)
▪ Paul knew that Philemon was an example of a
true believer and was praying that he would
maintain this faithfulness in the present case!
▸Every Christians needs to live such a life that
we will be seen as a true believer!
▸We must not only talk about Christ, but
rather we must learn to life for Him!
▪ Notices verse 5. “I hear of your love and of the
faith that you have towards the Lord & the
saints!”
10. Paul appealing for Onesimus!
(Phile. 1:8-21)
▪ Paul first shows appreciation and praise for
Philemon’s faithfulness in the past and now he
appeals to him to keep it in the present!
▪ We cannot not live on past successes, we
must live in the present!
▸It is what we do today that makes a
difference!
▸We need to keep moving in the right
direction, keep being faithful!
11. III. Philemon was a Fruitful Man!
(Phile. 1:6-7)
▪ Philemon was the kind of person your could
call on and know that he would be there!
▸“And my prayer is, that thy liberality to the
saints, which is the fruit of thy faith. May
become effectual to the acknowledgment of
thy good works by other Christians, who hear
of such instances of thy charity” (British)
▪ Philemon was one that was willing to “share”
his faith and become an example!
12. Paul expresses his love & joy for
Philemon’s steadfastness in the faith!
▪ Philemon was an example for others to
follow!
▸ “Because the hearts of the saints have
been refreshed through you!” (Phile. 1:7b)
▪ Philemon has been fruitful in the past and
Paul is hoping he will now remain fruitful in the
present!
▸ How should this letter help change us?
What should we be getting from it?
13. Conclusion:
▪ There are indeed many lessons here for us!
The world/ the church needs more Philemons!
▪ We need to always be showing appreciation
& praise for the people God places in our
lives!
▪ We need to be living such a life that we are
worthy of praise and we are truly an example
for others!
▪ If you are here and not yet a Christian, then
today is the day!
