Mindfulness & Meditation!
Col 3:1-3 If then you have a new life with
Christ, give your attention to the things of
heaven, where Christ is seated at the right
hand of God. Keep your mind on the higher
things, not on the things of earth. For your
life on earth is done, and you have a secret
life with Christ in God.
What is Mindfulness?
• In the last few years a great deal of scientific
research has been done on the subject of
“mindfulness!”
– According to the research there is an over
whelming abundance of proof that the benefits of
mindfulness are astounding!
– Addiction, depression, mental & emotional
problems can all be eliminated with this practice!
If you are
interested in
studying this
more I would
recommend
talking a class
on mind-
fullness! There
are many even
for free online!
I. The Definition!
• Mindfulness = the psychological process of bringing
one's attention to experiences occurring in the
present moment, which one can develop through the
practice of meditation and through other training.
• Meditation = the practice where an individual uses a
technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing their
mind on a particular object, thought or activity – to
train attention and awareness, and achieve a
mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.
Biblical Definition!
• Php 3:12-14 Not as if I had even now got the
reward or been made complete: but I go on in
the hope that I may come to the knowledge of
that for which I was made the servant of Christ
Jesus. Brothers, it is clear to me that I have not
come to that knowledge; but one thing I do,
letting go those things which are past, and
stretching out to the things which are before, I
go forward to the mark, even the reward of the
high purpose of God in Christ Jesus.
Some verses to help us!
• Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but
in everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
And the peace of God, which surpasses all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in
Christ Jesus.
• Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be
transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing
you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and
acceptable and perfect.
II. The Description!
• “A picture is worth a 1,000 words!”
– Do you believe this is generally true? Why or why not?
• How many of us when trying to understand
something have said, “can you describe it to me,
give me an example?” Why is this?
• In this point we want to better understand what
mindfulness & meditation is in a practical sense!
• So I just want to give it to you straight!
Or, mind on the
Master! (Ps. 1:2)
But his delight is in
the law of the LORD,
And in His law he
meditates day and
night. (NKJV)
But whose delight is
in the law of the
Lord, and whose
mind is on his law
day and night. (BBE)
The truth is that the Bible is filled with
examples of mindfulness & meditation!
• When we read about the life of Christ we
often see Him engaging in these practices!
• Even the practice of prayer has a great deal
to do with what we are studying this
morning! Prayer is definitely a form of
mindfulness & meditation!
– Learning to see through the eyes of God & not man!
III. The Demand!
• So what are we supposed to do with this
information? How is this designed to change
us? What action steps must we take?
• If we stop before this point, we have
stopped too soon! Have I helped change
your mind this morning about the “need”
for a daily practice of mindfulness!
Take a breath, take a moment, be
still & know!
• Ps 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God; I
will be exalted among the nations, I will be
exalted in the earth!
• If we are too busy to “keep” God in our
hearts & minds, then we are simply too
busy!
It is often the quiet moments that
brings about the greatest change!
• Psalm 46:10 “Cease striving and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted
in the earth.”
• 1 Chronicles 16:11 “Look to the Lord and His
strength; seek His face always.”
• Mark 1:35-37 “Before daybreak the next morning,
Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to
pray. Later Simon and the others went out to find
him. When they found him, they said, “Everyone is
looking for you.”
Conclusion:
• Do you want to walk on water? Mt. 14:22-33
–Mind on the Master we rise, mind on the
mess we sink!
–Eyes on the Savior we rise, eyes on the storm
we sink!
• Are you a Christian, have you experienced a
changed mind? Have you be transformed?
