Linear algebra deals with vectors, matrices, and linear mappings between spaces. Some applications of linear algebra include global positioning systems (GPS), ranking in search engines, decision tree induction, and testing software code. GPS uses linear algebra concepts like trilateration to determine a receiver's location based on distance measurements to at least three satellites, with a fourth satellite increasing accuracy. The GPS system calculates distances based on signal travel times from satellites to the receiver.
