The amounts of radioactivity in the igneous rocks have been investigated; 63 basalt rock samples were collected from Aden governorate, South of Yemen. The activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were measured using NaI (TI) detector. Along the study area the radium equivalent activities Raeq in Bq/Kg of samples under investigation were found in the range of 51.60to 809.26Bq/Kg with an average value of 237.01Bq/Kg, this value is below the internationally accepted value of 370 Bq/Kg. To estimate the health effects of this natural radioactive composition, the average values of absorbed gamma dose rate D (55 nGyh-1), Indoor and outdoor annual effective dose rates Eied (0.11 mSvy-1), and Eoed (0.03 mSvy-1), External hazard index Hex(0.138) and internal hazard index Hin (0.154), and representative level index Iγr(0.386) have been calculated and found to be higher than the worldwide average values.

This study presents results of Activity Concentrations, Absorbed dose rate and the Annual Effective dose rates of naturally occurring radionuclides (40K, 232Th and 226Ra) absorbed in 8 soil samples collected from different areas within the Ajiwei mining sites in Niger State, North Central Nigeria. A laboratory γ-ray spectrometry NaI (Tl) at the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, was used to carry out the analysis of the soil samples. The values of Activity Concentration for 40K ranged from 421.6174 ± 7.9316 to 768.7403 ± 7.9315; for 226Ra it ranged from 20.6257 ± 2.0858 to 44.0324 ± 5.0985 and for 232Th the ranged is from 23.7172 ± 1.3683 to 62.7137 ± 4.1049 Bq.Kg-1. While the Absorbed Dose for 40K ranged from 17.5814 ± 0.3307 to 32.0565 ± 0.3307 ŋGy.h-1, for 226Ra the range is from 9.5291 ± 0.9636 to 20.3430 ± 2.3555 ŋGy.h-1 and for 232Th range from 14.3252 ± 0.4414 to 37.8791 ± 2.4794 ŋGy.h-1. The total average Absorbed Dose rate of the 8 soil samples collected is 63.7877 ŋGy.h-1 and the estimated Annual Effective Dose for the sampled areas range from 0.0636- 0.1028mSvy-1 (i.e 64 – 103 μSv.y-1), with an average Annual Effective Dose of 0.0782 mSv.y-1 (i.e. 78.2 μSv.y-1). These results show’s that the radiation exposure level reaching members of the public in the study areas is lower than the recommended limit value of 1 mSv.y-1 (UNSCEAR, 2000). Also the mean Radium Equivalents obtained ranged from 107.3259 BqKg-1 (AJ1) to 179.4064 BqKg-1 (AJ4). These results show that the recommended Radium Equivalent Concentration is ≤ 370 BqKg-1 which is the requirement for soil materials to be used for dwellings, this implies that the soil from this site is suitable use for residential buildings. The mean External Hazard Index ( Hext ) ranged from 0.1229 Bqkg-1 (AJ3) to 0.4226 Bqkg-1 (AJ7).. While the maximum allowed value of (Hext = 1) corresponds to the upper limit of Raeq (370 BqKg-1) in order to limit the external gamma radiation dose from the soil materials to 1.5 mGy y-1. That is, this Index should be equal to or less than unity (Hext ≤ = 1). Furthermore, the mean Internal Hazard Index (Hext) ranged from 0.3456 Bqkg-1 (AJ1) to 0.6453 Bqkg-1 (AJ2) .Finally, the mean value of the Excess Alpha Radiation (Iα) ranged from 0.1031 Bq.Kg-1 (AJ1) to 0.2202 Bq.Kg-1 (AJ3. All these values for Iα are below the maximum permissible value of Iα= 1 which corresponds to 200 Bq.Kg-1. It can therefore be said that no radiological hazard is envisaged to dwellers of the study areas and the miners working on those sites area.
Prediction of Soil Total Nitrogen Content Using Spectraradiometer and GIS in ...Agriculture Journal IJOEAR
— In this study, soil samples were collected from two locations: Samawa and Rumetha in southern Iraq. The samples from each location were split into two datasets: calibration set and validation set. VNIR reflectance (350-2500 nm) and GIS-Kriging were used in combination with Partial Least Square (PLS) to predict total N. only two regions reported higher determination coefficient R 2 and lower Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) than the other wavelength regions. PLS calibration models yielded an R 2 of 0.96 and 0.97 for Rumetha and 0.87 and 0.94 for Samawa location in bands at 500-600 and 800-1000 nm, respectively. The potential of VNIR-based and GIS-Kriging models to predict new unknown soil samples were assessed by using validation datasets from both studied locations. The cross-validation of GIS-Kriging models were unsatisfactory predicted with an Q 2 of 0.28 between laboratory-measured and predicted total N values for Rumetha and 0.43 for Samawa location. While VNIR-based validation models achieved highly predictive power with an R 2 v of 0.84 between laboratory-measured and predicted total N values for Rumetha and 0.85 for Samawa location. These results reveal extremely decreasing in model predictive ability when shifting from VNIR Spectroscopy method to GIS-Kriging.

The mean activity level of the natural radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K is 30.41 ±2.4, 36.26 ±2.9 and 358.12±26.54 Bq kg-1, respectively. These values are well within values reported elsewhere in the country and in other countries with similar environments. The study also examined some radiation hazard indices. The mean values obtained are, 215±37Bq kg-1, 50.10±6 nGy h-1, 0.34mSv y-1, 0.30 and 0.34 for Radium Equivalent Activity (Raeq), Absorbed Dose Rates (D), Annual Effective Dose Rates (Eff Dose), External Hazard Index (Hex) and Internal Hazard Index (Hin) respectively. All the health hazard indices are well below their recommended limits. The paper recommends further studies to estimate internal and external doses from other suspected radiological sources to the population in Aden governorate.

Assessment of Activity Concentration of The Naturally Occurring Radioactive M...IOSR Journals
The activity concentrations of potassium, Radium and thorium in soil samples from a mining site in yankandutse, Kaduna north western Nigeria were measured using gamma ray spectroscopy method. Activity concentration of potassium, Radium and thorium were determined. The activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th, respectively in Bq kg-1 in the soil samples ranged as follows: K-40 196.11±2.02 to 553.03±1.08 with average of 382.01, Ra-226 .1506±.03 to 5.67±.03 with average of 2.08 and Th-232 18.13±3.19 to 73.09±1.59 with average activity concentrations of 47.23 .The mean activity concentration of potassium and radium are below average but for thorium the activity concentration is above average.

The Influence of Vermiculite on the Uptake of Silver Nanoparticles in a Terre...Agriculture Journal IJOEAR
— The uptake of silver from silver nanoparticles in soil was investigated in the presence of increasing concentrations of Vermiculite, typical 2:1 clay. Two insect species, Acheta domesticus and Tenebrio molitor, and two plant species, Helianthus annuus and Sorghum vulgare, were exposed to silver nanoparticles in the presence of increasing concentrations of Vermiculite in soil. Silver nanoparticles were characterized using techniques including transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and powder X-ray diffraction. The levels of silver in test species exposed to silver nanoparticles were measured using an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer. An increase in the cation exchange capacity of soil was observed with the increase in the concentration of vermiculite in soil. The results suggested a decrease in the uptake of silver from silver nanoparticles in soil by Acheta domesticus as a function of increasing concentrations of Vermiculite in soil. No apparent trend was observed in the remaining species. Both plant species were found to accumulate silver in their roots. The translocation of silver to stems and leaves was observed in the case of Helianthus annuus. Results from this study suggest that the presence of Vermiculite in soil could possibly decrease the uptake of silver from silver nanoparticles.

Geoenvironmental study of ABUAD female dumpsite was conducted to investigate the suitability of its location
and potential impact on groundwater in the environment. Profiling and Vertical electrical sounding methods
were employed using Dipole - Dipole and Schlumberger configuration respectively. Five points were sounded
and one profile was occupied. Three heterogeneous subsurface lithologic units were established namely; lateritic
topsoil, clayey-sand, and, fresh basement. The curve types are simple H and HA. The topsoil and clayey-sand
materials are characterized with relatively low resistivity values while the fresh basement materials are
characterized with high resistivity values. The average resistivity and thickness values for the topsoil are
280.0Ωm and.2.3m respectively. Clayey-sand was encountered in all the locations with average resistivity and
thickness values of 32.0Ωm and 7.3m respectively. Basement is relatively shallow in the study area, it was
encountered in all the locations with an average resistivity and depth values to the top of basement of 674Ωm,
and 9.6m respectively. Overburden materials are relatively thin within the area with an average resistivity and
thickness values of 156Ωm, and 9.6m respectively. The overburden materials constituting the aquiferous units
within the study area are porous, vulnerable, and good paths for leachate migration. The relatively low
resistivity values within the clayey-sand layers (14 - 61Ωm) are suggestive of leachate intrusion, while relatively
high resistivity values of the impervious basement are due to their crystalline nature. The proximity of the
dumpsite to both the cafeteria and residential halls is a cause for concern.
Evaluation of Radiation Emmission from Refuse Dump Sites in Owerri, NigeriaIOSR Journals
The natural radioactivity concentrations from 40 different locations of waste dump sites in Owerri, Imo state Nigeria, has been measured using a gamma – ray spectrometer. The results indicate that the ranges of activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra and 323Th in the samples were ˂17.2 – 686.17 BqKg-1 , ˂ 4.2 – 103.51 BqKg-1 and ˂ 5.1 – 65.28 BqKg-1 respectively. The highest outdoor effective dose obtained was 65.28 μSv.y-1 which is less than the world average outdoor value of 70 μSv.y-1 given by United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effect of Atomic Radiation ( UNSCEAR )

This paper titled Seismic Refraction Survey for Groundwater Potentials of Southern Paiko Area.
Niger State, Nigeria, employs the service of seismic refraction survey method. A twelve-channel seistronix was
used for the data collection. The profiles were marked at 100 m intervals, while the profiles lines traversed
1000 m (1km). A Total of 44 spreads were shot. Data were collected, Time – distance (T-S) graphs were plotted
using matrix laboratory software, velocities of the underlying layers obtained and depths to the refractor layer
computed and geologic cross sections were obtained. The results obtained gave an overview of the lateral
variation in the lithological changes of the subsurface earth materials in the surveyed area. The basement
surface varied in depth, from 10.16 m to a maximum of 14.80 m. weathered layer velocities ranging from 809
m/s to 3612 m/s and consolidated layer velocities varying between 2858 m/s to 9696 m/s. Four shot points were
delineated as aquifer potentials of the area having depth to refractor varying between 13.70 m and 14.80 m with
overburden velocities ranging from 1940 m/s to 3462 m/s. The rock materials identified in the surveyed area are
chiefly sand, saturated clay, gravel, gneiss, igneous rock and granite.

Abstract
NaI (TI) detector crystal coupled to a Canberra series 10 plus multichannel analyser (MCA) was used to analyse
the soil samples collected from Sagamu (Sedimentary terrain) and Abeokuta (Basement complex) in South
Western Nigeria. The use of the soil samples is to determine the activity concentrations due to radium, thorium
and potassium so as to delineate between the two terrains using radiometric survey. From the result of the
activity concentrations of these radionuclide, the mean value of the activity concentrations of 40k (72±48) in
sedimentary terrain is higher than in 226Ra (35± 20) and 232Thorium (43 ±26) respectively. In the basement
complex, the average value of the activity concentration of 40k (80 ±46) was also higher in 226Ra (44±18) and
232
Thorium (53 ± 25) respectively. The relatively high value recorded 40k radionuclide may be attributed to the
perceived variations in the environment resulting from past activities. The results shows that the activity
concentration of the radionuclides is higher in basement complex than in sedimentary terrain thus, delineate
between the two terrains since it is well know that in basement complex, granites contain high concentrations of
uranium, thorium and potassium.

1. Introduction
Radiometric survey is one of the geophysical techniques often used and a useful tool in geological mapping to
delineate between sedimentary terrain and basement complex of South Western Nigeria. The great global interest
in the study and survey of naturally occurring radiation and environmental radioactivity had been essentially
based on the importance of using the results from such studies for the assessment of public radiation exposure
rates and the performance of epidemiological studies, as well as reference radiometric data relevant in studying
the possible changes in environmental radioactivity due to nuclear, industrial and other human technologyrelated activities (UNSCEAR, 2000).
Radioactivity is the spontaneous decay or disintegration of an unstable atomic nucleus usually accompanied by
the emission of radiation (Heinrich, 1985). One of the ways to achieve greater accuracy in facies delineation is
by the use of radiation (alpha – α, beta-β and gamma –γ) emanating from the decay of radioactive element
contained in the rock unit (Amadi et al; 2012). The most useful of these radiations in radiometric survey are
gamma radiations. Gamma rays can penetrate up to 30cm of rock and several hundred metres of air, and are the
only choice available for the remote sensing of terrestrial radioactivity.
Each gamma-ray photon has a discrete energy and this energy is characteristic of the source isotope. This forms,
the basis of gamma-ray spectrometry. Energies of geological interest lie between 0.2 and 3 Me v which
corresponds to electromagnetic wavelengths of about
3 x 10-12 m and a frequency of about 3 x 10-19 Hz
(Minty, 1997).
The Nigeria land area is made of 923,768km2 where 50% of the total surface area is underlain by basement
complex and the remaining 50% by sedimentary rocks (Rahaman, 1988). There are two groups of granites in the
geological setting of Nigeria and these are known as the older granites and the younger granites. The older
granites are widespread and often give rise to smoothly domed hills (Inselgers). The younger granite suites
which include granites, sy- enites, and rhyolites cover intensive area in plateau province and also occur as small
masses (Kogbe, 1976).
The study area Ogun state (Sagamu and Abeokuta) lies on the western part of Nigeria between latitude 60 30’N
and 70 30’N of the equator and longitude 3000’E and 60 30’E of the Greenwich meridian (Figure 1). The study is
aimed at determine the activity concentrations of natural radioactive elements in soil samples so as to delineate
between sedimentary terrain and basement complex.

2. Materials and Methods
Fifteen locations were pre-survey first in each of the sedimentary and basement terrains under investigation. At
each location, soil samples of about 500g were collected to a depth of 0.5m and transferred into a polythene bag
and taken to radiation laboratory, physics department, University of Ibadan for processing.
At the laboratory the soil samples were dried until there was no detectable change in the mass of the sample at
1100C in an oven which is temperature controlled. The dried samples were grounded and pulverised into powder
form. Only 200g of the dry weight soil samples were used for the analysis using a 76 x 76mm NaI (TI) detector
crystal (Model No 802 series, Canberra Inc) enclosed in a graded 10cm – thick Canberra lead Shield. The
detector was coupled to a Canberra series 10 plus Multichannel Analyser (MCA) (Model No. 1104) through a
preamplifier using 5m connection co-axial cables.
The choice of NaI (TI) detector used in this study is as result of its modest energy resolution (Full Width at Half
Maximum Height (FWHM) of about 8% at energy of 0.662 Mev (137Cs).
The soil samples were measured for a period of 10hr, after which the net area under the corresponding γ-ray
peaks in the energy spectrum was used to compute the activity concentrations in the soil samples through the
equation (Obed et al; 2005; and Jibri et al; 2007b):
C (Bq Kg-1) = KCn, - where K = 1 ℇ Pγ Ms,
C = the activity concentration of the radionuclide in the sample given in Bq Kq-1
Cn = the count rate under the corresponding peak
= the detector efficiency at the specific γ -ray energy
Pγ = the absolute transition probability of the specific γ-ray.
Ms = the mass of the soil sample in kg.
It should be mentioned here that, the detection limit of the measuring system used in this work were 17.3 Bq Kq1
, 4.2Bq Kq-1 and 5.1 Bq Kq-1 for 40K, 226Ra, and 232Th, respectively. Values below these numbers were taken in
this study as being Below the Detection Limit (BDL) of the detector. The results of the activity concentrations of
the radionuclides in the soil samples measured are presented next.
3. Results and Discussions
The measured activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in the soil samples from fifteen (15) locations each
in sedimentary terrain and basement complex are presented in tables 1 and 2 respectively, along with the
statistical measurement uncertainties.
The error terms in the mean values in the tables are the standard deviations of the range of values across the
terrains.
As could be seen from the tables, the mean activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232Th and 40k for sedimentary terrain
were 35±20, 43 ±26 and 72 ± 48 respectively. The activity concentration of 40k is the highest when compared
with other radionuclides. According to Jibiri et al, 2009 the relatively high value recorded 40k radionuclide may
be attributed to the perceived variations in the environment resulting from past activities.
In the basement terrains, the activity concentrations of the radionuclides follow the same pattern as the case in
sedimentary terrain where 40k is higher in value than other radionuclide. The values were; 44 ± 18, 53 ± 25 and
80 ± 46 respectively for 226Ra, 232Th and 40k respectively. It should be noted that, in general, the activity
concentrations of the radionuclides in basement complex is higher than in the sedimentary terrain.
It is well known that in basement complex, granites contain high concentrations of uranium, thorium and
potassium (Lopez et al, 2004; Yang et al, 2005). The uranium and thorium are incorporated into the rocks in the
crystallisation of the last magmas and residual solutions since their large ionic radii hinder them from
crystallising in the early silicates (Shiva Prasad et al, 2008). This shows that, the host materials (Sand and
Granites) in basement complex has a higher radiation emission than in sedimentary terrain
4. Conclusion
Interpretation of radiometric data is more similar to interpreting the results of a conventional geological survey;
understanding of how radiometric survey can be applied to exploration problems requires the consideration of
the geologic source of radioactivity (Hansen, 1980).
Urquhart, 1988 says that much of the uranium and thorium in igneous rock is concentrated in a few accessory
minerals such as zircon, sphene and apitite. Other highly radioactive minerals, like monazite, allanite, uraninite,
thorite and pyrochlore are wide spread in nature but they are very minor consistituents of rocks and are
distributed erratically.
The minerals that carry uranium and thorium are generally associated with felsic intrusions -particularly with
younger intrusion, they are found much less frequently in mafic rocks or in volcanics. The uranium and thorium

content of rock generally increases with acidity, with the highest concentrations found in pegmatites (Grant,
1982).
Uranium is easily oxidized to a water soluble form and can be readily leached from pegmatites and granites and
redeposit in sediments at large distances from the source rock while thorium has no soluble ion and therefore
tends to remain with the parent rock or Transported over relatively short distances in the form of solid mineral
grains (Bristow, 1979; Grasty, 1979 and Urquhart, 1988).
The natural environmental radioactivity in a location depends primarily on its geological and geographical
conditions. It is related to the composition of each lithologically separated area and the content of the rock from
which the soil originates (Whicker, 1983; Wollenberg and Smith, 1990).
The study has provided data on the radionuclide concentrations in the soil samples of both sedimentary and
basement terrain of southwestern, Nigeria. The results showed that, the activity concentrations of the
radionuclides in basement complex (44 ± 18, 53 ± 25 and 80 ± 46 for 226Ra, 232Th and 40k respectively) is higher
than in the sedimentary terrain (35±20, 43 ±26 and 72 ± 48 for 226Ra, 232Th and 40k respectively.), thus, delineate
between the two terrains. This shows that, the host materials (Sand and Granites) in basement complex have a
higher radiation emission than in sedimentary terrain.
