The apostrophe has three main uses: to mark omissions in contractions, to indicate possessive case, and by some to form certain plural words not established in English. It is used to show that something belongs to a person or thing. Rules for apostrophes include using them to show possession for both singular and plural nouns, as well as in combining words where the apostrophe replaces any omitted letters in the first word. Examples demonstrate correctly using apostrophes to indicate possession for various nouns, including those that are singular, plural, and possessive pronouns.
