The Apollo 13 mission to land on the moon was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded in the Service Module on April 13, 1970, damaging the Service Module and crippling the Command Module. The crew used the Lunar Module as a "lifeboat" to return safely to Earth after generating enough power and eliminating excess carbon dioxide. Future Apollo missions were successful, but the space program shifted focus to a Mars mission due to restricted budgets.
