In the past year, we saw big data and distributed computing maturing and artificial intelligence coming into the mainstream. These technologies were merely buzzwords not too long ago, but have disrupted a wide range of industries, including insurance. One factor that is often credited for the rapid advances in these technologies is the open and collaborative nature of the computer science and machine learning communities. With a few exceptions, the insurance industry hasn’t always embraced open source software and sharing research, but the trend has been shifting recently as actuaries refine and align their roles in an environment driven by data science. We discuss benefits, challenges, and ramifications of conducting actuarial research in the open, and introduce Kasa AI (https://kasa.ai), a recent initiative for community-driven research and software development for insurance. We demonstrate ongoing projects in life and nonlife insurance, and walk through workflows for participating.

The three biggest EHR challenges for 2018 are cybersecurity, interoperability, and clinician burnout. Cybersecurity is a major issue as the healthcare industry experienced 228 data breaches in the first half of 2017 alone. Interoperability needs to be improved by revising current strategies to be more inclusive and streamlining initiatives like HIEs. Clinician burnout is also a serious problem, with 96% of executives and clinicians agreeing it is an issue, often caused by information overload from EHRs.

Key events included identifying fodder options with stakeholders, sourcing seed, farmers planting on their own fields, forming a dairy co-op, and sourcing cross-bred cows. Preliminary findings showed that introducing appropriate technologies through existing stakeholders helped raise and address broader system constraints, and working with stakeholder platforms meant the focus shifted from technological to organizational issues over time. Facilitating stakeholder platforms was found to be time-consuming and monitoring change was not trivial.

Next generation DNA sequencing is being used to identify genetic differences between the trypanosomiasis-susceptible Boran cattle breed and the tolerant N'Dama breed. Sequencing of 10 Boran and 20 N'Dama individuals has identified many single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within genes, including some that could affect protein function. The researchers are examining SNPs within the regions of the genome previously found to contain genes influencing trypanosomiasis response. One identified SNP causes a STOP codon gain in the PON3 gene, which could impact gene expression and survival after infection. OCS will replace old systems like SUN and HR4U by migrating their data. The old systems will then only be available for reference. Data in OCS will only be viewable by authorized users. Sharing OCS with other CGIAR centers will help collaboration and coordination on CRPs. For all staff, weekly time registration in OCS will be mandatory, with timesheets prefilled for ease of submitting within 1-2 minutes. Travel and payment requests can also now be processed online to reduce paperwork and trips to the finance department. RDA EU Webinar - DDRI WG / April2017 Overview: Driven by the rapid development of data storage technology, the number of data repositories is growing fast. Researchers now have access to a range of data infrastructures such as discipline-specific repositories and national (regional) data infrastructures. The problem is that these infrastructures are often operating in silos; that is, they do not connect their datasets to related research information in other platforms. One solution to this problem is the work undertaken by the Data Description Registry Interoperability (DDRI) WG of Research Data Alliance (RDA). The group has developed the Research Data Switchboard which connects datasets and related information across research data repositories using information on co-authorship and jointly funded projects. In this webinar, Dr Amir Aryani presents an overview of the Switchboard project and discuss how it enables connecting datasets to the Research Graph -- a distributed graph of scholarly works derived by the Switchboard project. Also, we will show a live demo of traversing the graph of connections between publications, datasets, researchers and research projects across repositories and data infrastructures. The goals are to foster innovation in cloud computing systems research, encourage new cloud applications research, collect experimental datasets, and develop open-source cloud software stacks. By federating existing resources from different organizations into a single testbed, Open Cirrus hopes to reduce costs through shared innovation while increasing impact through a larger collaborative effort.

The Food Safety Working Group (FSWG) in Vietnam was created in 2015 at the request of the Deputy Prime Minister to address food safety issues in the country. It brings together government agencies, ministries, and development partners to facilitate joint policy dialogue and improve food safety. Over eight years of operations led by different organizations, the FSWG has contributed to various initiatives. However, it faces challenges of diminished government participation over time and dependence on active members. Going forward, it will strengthen its operations by integrating under Vietnam's One Health Partnership framework to better engage stakeholders and achieve policy impacts.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing

Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process. In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds. - These are slides of the talk given at IEEE International Conference on Software Testing Verification and Validation Workshop, ICSTW 2022.
