This document discusses apiculture, the practice of keeping bees for honey production. It outlines the common species of honey bees, the castes within a bee colony including the queen, worker, and drone bees. It also lists the common beekeeping appliances used and procedures for capturing and transferring bee colonies. Examination of Colonies
The hive has to be opened occasionally to
see if;
• The queen is working normally
• Enough brood is present
• They require more room or food
• They are free from attack of wax-moth
Examination should be carried out on bright sunny days & not disturbed during

Management Of Bees
Spring Management
● Increase Population, Weak colonies
● Study quantity of Queen, brood and Honey
● Clean hives
● More comb space if required
● Clip wings of Queen,if required
● Formation of Swarming
Winter Management
● Protection
● Feeding Bees
● Uniting Colonies (Smoke & Newspaper
method)
Summer Management
● Protect hive from heat , rain,
ants, wasps and moth
● Proper ventilation
● Handling colonies as little as is
Absolutely essential
● Giving a brood frame to brood-
less colony
● Sometimes causes Absconding

• Moving bees to new locality
-Robbing of a colony
∙ Strong colonies rob the weaker ones during the time of scarcity.
