Capturing & Transferring of colonies
Transferring Colony from a Wall Hive:
Transferring Colony from a Log-Hive:
Capturing stray swarms and putting them in a modern hive done by following
methods;
• Swarm catching basket
• Removing the entire cluster

Examination of Colonies
The hive has to be opened occasionally to
see if;
• The queen is working normally
• Enough brood is present
• They require more room or food
• They are free from attack of wax-moth
Examination should be carried out on bright sunny days & not disturbed during
cold, rainy or windy days, or at night.

Management Of Bees
Spring Management
● Increase Population, Weak colonies
● Study quantity of Queen, brood and Honey
● Clean hives
● More comb space if required
● Clip wings of Queen,if required
● Formation of Swarming
Winter Management
● Protection
● Feeding Bees
● Uniting Colonies (Smoke & Newspaper
method)
Summer Management
● Protect hive from heat , rain,
ants, wasps and moth
● Proper ventilation
● Handling colonies as little as is
Absolutely essential
● Giving a brood frame to brood-
less colony
● Sometimes causes Absconding

Location of the Hive
• Spots must ensure nectar and Pollen.
• Away from road and protected from human and wind.
• Hive place at 6 inch to 9 inch above ground
• Have good supply of water.

Moving Colonies
• Moving bees to a new spot in an apiary
• Moving bees to new locality
-Robbing of a colony
∙ Strong colonies rob the weaker ones during the time of scarcity.
-Requeening of a colony
∙ The introduction of a new vigorous queen into a colony which have lost its queen or
possesses a poor queen.

Enemies of Bees
❑ The wax-moth
❑ Wasps
❑ Black ants
❑ Mites
Spray Malathion or DDVP for the control of above-mentioned pests of bees.
