For federal agencies, accomplishing in just a matter of weeks IT tasks that typically take months or years may seem like a pipe dream. That’s the promise of the DevSecOps methodology. DevSecOps is a way of thinking that encourages software developers to work collaboratively with IT operations and security staff on development, testing and quality assurance to develop and deploy software more quickly and automate deployment of code, security and infrastructure changes. Commercial Cloud provides a comprehensive platform of tools, technologies and services that can enable federal agencies to realize this promise. The VA Digital Services Team (DSVA) has been leading the Department of Veterans Affairs on their journey to the cloud for the past 4 years. The initial DSVA cloud deployment was vets.gov and Caseflow on AWS. Vets.gov and Caseflow are real world examples of how modern devsecops techniques be used with existing federal ATO security requirements. In this talk, AWS and DSVA will present DevSecOps principles, best practices and lessons learned. DSVA will discuss how Vets.gov and Caseflow have implemented these techniques inside the VA. This includes applying continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) to the software development process where security checks are performed and automated to ensure compliance and ATO conformance with VA's security standards.

As technology moves from being a cost-center to a revenue generator in nearly every business, technologists are expected to deliver more with fewer resources. DevOps enables this efficiency through improved collaboration between product management, development, release management, quality assurance, information security, and operations. However, Aater Suleman says that the challenge of incorporating DevOps into a business is no small task. Improving this collaboration requires cross-functional technologies that benefit all departments. By this definition, Docker may well be the most important tool in the DevOps toolbox as it allows empowering and permeable interfaces to be built between different departments throughout the DevOps loop. Aater explores both the Dev and Ops tracks of three companies and examines advantages that were achieved using Docker containers. He shows how Docker containers can work in environments from development to production and shares how this effort can be empirically tracked using five key performance indicators.

The Context package has been a popular topic in the Golang community for sometime and as of the Go 1.7 release, it has become a standard Go library. It carries a variety of details across API boundaries and between processes. NATS is an open-source, high-performance, lightweight cloud native messaging system. Many NATS users working in Go have been using Context alongside NATS, but there has not been an officially-supported Context-NATS integration – that is, until now. This talk will discuss what Context is, what observations and lessons Waldemar and his team have learned integrating Context and NATS, and how you use the two together. He'll also provide a quick demo to show the integration. The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
