This document provides guidance on APA referencing format required for a university course. It recommends Massey University's OWLL website for APA referencing examples and guidance, and discusses reference management software options for citing sources, including Microsoft Word, EndNote, and other free software. It emphasizes that APA style is important to learn as it is commonly used in many university disciplines and will be helpful for further study.

2.  Academic conventions and copyright law require that
you acknowledge when you use the ideas of others in
your academic writing. In most cases, this means
stating which book, journal article, internet site is the
source of an idea or quotation.
 The APA referencing format is the referencing system
required for this Specialist Teaching course.

referencing and guidance when completing assignments

the pictures it gives you examples of how to references that item.

 Recommended Software
 Massey University Library recommends this software, in order from the
simplest through to the more advanced.
 OWLL APA Interactive creates customised examples of APA style
references
Good for: creating a few references yourself; becoming familiar with and
checking correct APA style.
 Discover (and some other Library databases) formats references in several
styles, using the ‘Cite’ button in each item record
Good for: copying & pasting a few references; getting references for items
when finding material for assignments.

5.  Microsoft Word has a Citations & Bibliography function.
Instructions are available within Word, or try Microsoft Word
Tool (from Sheffield Hallam University).
Good for: managing and keeping more references; generating
reference lists and in-text citations.
 EndNote reference management software creates, stores and
manages references. It is on the Library and computing lab
computers, and is sold for personal computers for Massey-
related work for $36.
Good for: managing many references; exporting from
databases; storing for future use; generating reference lists and
in-text citations.

6.  Other Software
 This free software may be useful. Please note that Massey
University does not provide any support for these.
 Quickcite creates examples of APA, MLA, Chicago, and
ACS style references (from the University of Auckland).
 NoodleTools Express generates APA, MLA and Chicago
references.
 KnightCite generates APA, MLA and Chicago references.
 Mendeley is a reference manager and academic social
network.
 Zotero helps to collect, organize, cite, and share research
sources

7.  On reflection, and as this is a course requirement, the
APA referencing system is a tool, I will have to learn
to master and use for the next two years of study. It
will also be helpful when and if I go on to do further
study. A lot of universities use this format in their
Education, Business, Social Science and Humanities
disciplines, Massey University included. I have not
study at university level for a long time and found
that in researching this topic, the Massey University
web site is the easiest, the most useful and helpful to
a student wanting help with APA referencing.
