This session was held as a Deep Dive Session at the 2016 Healthy Minds | Healthy Campuses Summit. Participants from SFU and UBC jointly facilitated the session that provided a venue to share approaches for engaging faculty members and institutional leadership in creating learning environments that better support student mental health. With the growing recognition of the importance of a systemic health promotion approach in higher education- one that aims to shift the academic culture to better promote student flourishing, positive mental health and resilience- the impact of the overall campus environment, including learning environments, is a critical area for research and innovation in practice.
These are some of the resources that were shared at the Bonner Foundation's High-Impact Initiative Planning Retreat (March 2014) - "Civic Scholars: Engaged Campuses", held at Allegheny College. Several types of strategies and approaches for ensuring that campus culture, policies, and practices support deep community engagement and public scholarship were shared.

A Coordination of Services Team (COST) is a multidisciplinary team of school staff and providers who coordinate learning supports and resources for students. Teams meet regularly to review student referrals and link them to prevention and intervention services that support social emotional and behavioral health. This workshop will share findings from an inquiry of the impact of COST in Alameda County schools, offer a framework for measuring the outcomes of care coordination efforts, and present a case study profiling one schools’ implementation of the COST model. Participants will also engage in small groups to discuss the implications of this study and how they could strengthen and expand care/service coordination efforts in their own schools.

The shift to the Learning Paradigm and the call for more research-based education have
opened exciting new possibilities for higher education. Unfortunately, while the
Learning Paradigm has been applied to the whole of higher education, the focus on
research has been primarily as an activity on the side, or suitable only for a subset of
university students. We argue that especially with the advent of the world wide web,
more ubiquitous access to the raw material of scholarship can now be readily available
to all students. What is needed is an approach that organizes the entire curriculum
around the mindset of a scholar and, just as importantly, incorporates an understanding
of where traditionally-aged university students are developmentally.
In this keynote, Dr Hodge lays out the rationale for the ‘student as scholar’ mindset,
describes the impact of technological advances on the possibilities for original research,
relates the ‘student as scholar’ to the core philosophy of a liberal arts and sciences
approach, describes the developmental stages of university students as they relate to
the students’ research potential, and then demonstrates how individual courses and a
curriculum can be constructed with this perspective.
