Bandwidth growth is relentless, and networks
must be able to provide it dynamically on demand.
TODAY, optical fiber connects us at close
to the speed of light – the top speed of the
universe. A humble email can circumnavigate
the globe in 134 milliseconds, which is pretty
much the longest time it now takes to connect
one point on Earth with another. On our little
planet, we’re all connected in real time,
and content is within immediate reach.

data will traverse the world’s networks. The
video content moved in one month would take
more than 6 million years to watch.

law, networks need to size up in order
to meet the needs of an increasingly
online society. That can take things in
unexpected directions. For example,
3G is now available at an altitude of
close to 10 kilometres. In 2011,
a British climber sent the first tweet

overlook the fact that Anywhereization depends

transistors, chips and sensors. Thousands of
kilometres of cable, and millions of tonnes of
equipment like switches, routers and connected
devices. All consuming up to 307 GW of power
per year. (But remember, if you only weigh the
