Producing
Aldosterone

7. Renin is
hormone
that
controls BP
Converts angiotensinogen to
Angiotensin 1 which is converted
into Angiotensin 2 by angiotensin
converting enzyme aka ACE
Ang 2 acts on Angiotensin
receptor-1

9. Renin Blockers
Aliskiren inhibits renin's
action on
angiotensinogen
Thus inhibits formation
of Angiotensin 1 and 2

10. Toxicities
Headache
Diarrhea
Contraindicated in
pregnancy

11. ACE inhibitors
Captopril, Enalapril are important drugs .
Inhibit synthesis of Angiotensin II by inhibiting ACE thus
preventing vasoconstriction and cause decrease in BP
Cause decrease in production of aldosterone and increase
in levels of bradykinin that is endogenous vasodilator

12. Adverse effects x uses
Cause cough ,hyperkalemia, renal
disease and renal damage in fetus
so should be prevented in
pregnancy.
These are useful in Heart failure
and diabetes and of course
hypertension

13. Angiotensin
Receptor Blocker
Losartan, Valsartan, Irbesartan,
Candesartan
Competitively inhibit Ang 2 at AT1
receptor site
Blocks all the actions of A-II mediated
by AT1 like vasoconstriction,
aldosterone release (renal actions of
salt & water reabsorption)
As we can't block anything
useful , so let's

14. Toxicities
Lower incidence of Cough
Causes Hyperkalemia
Also causes fetal renal toxicity so
not administered in pregnancy
