1. derived from Latin word colo (colere), cultura means “to tend”, “to cultivate”, “to till”
(Tucker, 1931)
2. transmitted and created content and patterns of values, ideas, and other symbolic-
meaningful systems as factors in the shaping of human behavior” (Kroeber and
Parsons, 1958)
3. a shared mental software, “the collective programming of the mind that distinguishes
the members of one group or category of people from another” (Hofstede, 2001)
4. any activity, product or expression attained through the application of human skill is
CULTURE, that which is not is NATURE, such as trees, rivers, mountains, birds (De Leon)
5. the totality of learned, socially transmitted customs, knowledge, material objects, and
behavior. It includes the ideas, values, and artifacts of groups of people (Schaefer,
2013)

Enculturation. the process by which an individual
learns the rules and values of one’s culture.
Acculturation. cultural modification of an individual,
group, or people by adapting to or borrowing traits
traits from another culture
Assimilation. the process whereby individuals or
groups of differing ethnic heritage are absorbed into
into the dominant culture of a society.

Ethnocentrism
is an attitude of taking one's own culture and ways of life
of life as the best and the center of all and on the other hand,
hand, regarding other ethnic groups and cultures as inferior, bad,
inferior, bad, full of errors, etc. It is the tendency to apply one's
one's own cultural values in judging the behavior and beliefs of
beliefs of people raised in other cultures.

Cultural Relativism
the belief that all cultures are unique and
different and therefore acceptance, tolerance and
respect for diversity must be valued and observed.
