This paper analyzes two quotes by Emile Durkheim on suicide from a socio-psychological perspective. Durkheim theorized that without social norms to regulate behavior, anomie can occur, leading to suicidal behaviors. One quote discusses how unregulated greed can cause delusions of unattainable wealth, detaching individuals from reality. The other quote suggests that among wealthy social classes where comfort is readily available, individuals may feel they have nothing left to achieve and renounce life. The paper examines how Durkheim's theories are still applicable today and are supported by motivation theories and recent suicides linked to economic downturns.
