The Division of Labor is a subject which has fascinated social scientists for millennia. Before the
advent of modern times, philosophers and theologians concerned themselves with the implications of
the idea. Plato saw as the ultimate form of society a community in which social functions would be
rigidly separated and maintained; society would be divided into definite functional groups: warriors,
artisans, unskilled laborers, rulers. St. Paul, in his first letter to the church at Corinth, went so far as
to describe the universal Church in terms of a body: there are hands, feet, eyes, and all are under the

In this way, the very products of a man's hands came to be used as a means of enslaving him to
another. This theme, which Marx announced as early as 1844, is basic to all of Marx's later
economic writings.
Under this system of alienated labor, Marx argued, man's very life forces are stolen from him. The
source of man's immediate difficulty is, in this view, the division of labor. The division of labor
was, for Marx, the very essence of all that is wrong with the world. It is contrary to man's real
essence. The division of labor pits man against his fellow man; it creates class differences; it destroys
the unity of the human race. Marx had an almost theological concern with the unity of mankind, and
his hostility to the division of labor was therefore total (even totalitarian).

Marx's analysis of the division of labor is remarkably similar to Rousseau's4. Both argued that the
desire for private property led to the division of labor, and this in turn gave rise to the existence of
separate social classes based on economic differences. The Marxist analysis of politics relies
completely upon the validity of this assumption, Without economic classes, there would be no need
for a State, since a State is, by definition, nothing more than an instrument of social control used by

Individuals become more dependent on others to perform separate economic functions which they
are unable to carry out themselves. Rather than responsibilities based on the collective values,
individual's performance in the society is based on an occupational aspect. The division of labor is
more establish through a mutual economic interdependence. Hence, the relationship between man
and society is framed by a contract. The people carry out specialized functions which regulates the
performance in the society as a whole. This type of secular society, has a larger population than the
type of a mechanical one, the collective conscience is significantly lower due to the fact the each
individual have more of a freedom, which may then lead to an anomie; a social instability due to the
deteriorating standards of norms and values. Anomie refers to the breakdown of social norms where
these norms no longer control the activities of the members of society. Because Organic societies are
much larger, it becomes more complex, there interactions amongst the people are no longer tied with
social bonds and is impersonal. A way of solving this problem is strengthening associations with in
the society, creating a stronger normative structure, hence regaining a collective conscience.

The video game industry is a multibillion dollar a year industry, so it isn't hard to understand why
they go through great strides to protect their image. They provide entertainment to all ages, genders,
nationalities, and ethnicities. Contrary to the opinions of the industries opponents, video games are
not destroying our youth, they challenge, educate, and provide an escape from an oppressive
world. There are four main types of video games; RPG or role–playing game, RTS or real–time

siege tactics in order to survive for more than an hour of play. Rome: Total War has two different
screens that a player must learn to master, the campaign map, where armies, navies, and diplomats
are moved, and where cities are managed. Then there is the battle screen which changes every
time a player attacks or defends a different location. It is on this screen that the game is truly won
or lost. Gamers must fully understand the strengths and weaknesses of not only their units, but the
units of their enemy. This is but one challenge for gamers, they must also learn how to confront
elephants, chariots, siege weapons, and the naked fanatics of the Gauls. The next type of game is
sports titles, which are probably the most popular for a group of people, rather than the individual
gamer. Sports titles cover everything from football and baseball to golf and auto racing. These
games are equally enjoyed by both players who are or were jocks, and for those who wish they
were. A person learns the mechanics and intricacies, giving them a greater appreciation for the game
overall. Sometimes the video game can create a fan of a sport where none existed before. It is
obvious that video games are not all about sex, drugs and violence. While there are certain titles that

Marx believed it was something very horrible, and eventually all the workers would revolt and
ultimately over throw and get rid of capitalism. He had a utopian view of what he wanted the
world to be but unfortunately his view was unrealistic. Marx's idea of division of labor was
pessimistic on an extreme level. He was right about the worker's condition and the drive for
money on the capitalist's end, but the way he wanted the world to be would limit social mobility.
