Conservation Development in Jerome Village: A Case Study of Responsible Devel...OHM Advisors
http://www.ohm-advisors.com - Conservation development is a hot topic in community planning circles. It represents a new way of thinking about planning for development. Rather than choosing one of two extremes - rapid growth and anti-growth, community stakeholders and planners can pursue a third path. This presentation, Conservation Development in Jerome Village: A Case Study of Responsible Development on the Suburban Fringe, was created by Bird Houk, a division of OHM, based on one of its landmark projects. Jerome Village is a 1600-acre mixed-use development just outside metropolitan Columbus, Ohio. Jerome Village is a great example of a new planning philosophy, using the ‘best’ of Smart Growth and Conservation Development principles to create sustainable rural communities.

CURRENT SCENARIO OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING SCHEMES IN KERALAJOSIN MATHEW
Adequate shelter that provides security and safety is a fundamental need and a basic human right. • A major challenge in the 21st century is the creation of liveable urban areas, given the rapid urban growth across the world, in particular the global south. More than half the world’s population now lives in cities. • While the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development recognized the power of cities and towns which will constitute 70 per cent of the world population by 2050, SDG 11 is specifically on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. • The United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development in 2016 (Habitat III) emphasised the need for a New Urban Agenda, which would lay out the framework for how best to promote sustainable urbanisation.
The document contains a detailed list of various state housing boards in India. Housing Boards play an important role in urbanization and housing development of a city. Visit the websites of these housing boards to analyze current schemes and participate in those schemes.

In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), 90% of the population lives in informal housing, where living conditions are often substandard, unsafe and without basic services like water, electricity and sanitation although the region is undergoing profound demographic changes. Housing is a key component of local development - improved housing is not only a desirable goal, but it also contributes to economic growth, social development, improved governance and enhanced security and stability.
To suggest potential housing solutions, I-DREAM has developed a housing prototype applicable in rural areas of Chad by applying affordable, appropriate and resilient housing design principles. It aims to create a housing that is resource efficient, affordable to build and maintain, good to inhabit, and appropriate to the local context. It is also expected to contribute to the local employment generation and community participation. The prototype is developed based on a life-cycle thinking approach that considers all aspects of the construction and building life cycle, beginning from the supply of the locally harvested raw materials, passing through construction, hand-over, use and demolition of physical structures.
This study will introduce the background and overall process of the housing prototype development and potential implementations of the lessons in the future projects, addressing not only the individual housing improvement but also the sustainable local community development.
This work studies the form, structure, construction materials used, facilities provided in a rural housing and also to study the effect of housing policies on housing development in the rural area

Nepal Water for Health (NEWAH) is an NGO in Nepal working towards clean drinking water, hygiene
promotion and sanitation (WASH). They achieve this by working closely with communities in 51 districts
across the country building the people’s capacity to realise their rights to water and sanitation, and giving
access to the required infrastructure.
EWB volunteers have worked with NEWAH over the years to create innovative approaches to WASH
challenges, develop water safety plans and engage the community in the processes. EWB is also assisting
NEWAH with a climate change adaptation program and a catchment hydrology, groundwater recharge and
rainwater harvesting program.
In 2014-2015 EWB is partnering with NEWAH for the EWB Challenge. The EWB Challenge focuses on hill top
communities in the hill region of the Gorkha District. The village of Sandikhola has been chosen as a
representative community of the villages in the region, as a way for students to better visualise life in this
district. The design solutions, however, should be transferable to all hill top communities.
In 2013 EWB held a workshop with NEWAH staff in their regional office in Bharatpur. During this workshop
seven broad design areas were discussed and resulted in design projects being identified that NEWAH, and
the communities they work with, are either working on at the momen.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

18. 8 YEARS AFTER
LOOKING BACK AT THE RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT
• Economic challenge: high number of unemployment, low cash flow
• Agricultural activities has been started, it is one of the good sources for living
19. Research Findings
User Satisfaction
Positive Points
1.
2.
3.
Safety within the home resulted from the
strength of the house
Sense of belongingness within the home
resulted from participatory process in
building the houses
Easy to modify/ to extend
Things could do better
1.
2.
3.
Bigger size to accommodate people’s
need in the future
House design, need more “local touch”
House lay out : pay attention to local
perception/ interpretation to space (eg.
kitchen, bath room)
20. Beneficiary Targeting
• Large majority of the beneficiaries are still living in the house.
• Few cases of the houses are being abandoned as the owner move to another city.
• Some of the houses are rented or sold since the owners married to another survivors
and later share one of the two properties provided to them.
• Many inhabitants altered the function of houses so as to accommodate their lifestyle
and needs
21. Replication
•
•
•
•
The structure of the additional building do not follow the Uplink’s standard
due to economic constrain.
Some of the additional buildings used recycled material from the temporary
shelter.
People need more time and facilitation to learn new technologies/
innovation introduced during the project. Some of the innovations (eg. Solar
panel, biofil sanitation system) have not been used.
The organisation collaborated with the Australian Red Cross to provide a
similar participatory approach on Nasi Island, of the coast of Banda Aceh,
following the disaster. They are also implementing similar plans in postearthquake reconstruction in Yogyakarta.
22. Technical Performance
•
•
•
Good structural performance, easy to extend, easy to maintain
Need special attention on window frame and door
Maintenance : regular repaint, insect spray, applying kerosene on the floor
to keep it clean and shiny, cover the wood wall metal sheeting to avoid
damage caused by rain water.
23. Livelihood
• Some of the economic recovery program during the project are still
run by the community ex. pedicab driver and workshop, duck and
chicken farming
• Skills acquired during the reconstruction phase are used to earn
income as small contractors
• Positive impact on women’s position and power within society
24. Lesson Learned
Reconstruction is not only about rebuilding physical aspect such but
also reconstructing the life. The concept of people's driven,
participatory, and holistic approach is a must.
Some of lesson learned from the project are:
•Sensitivity to Local Culture
•Involving Survivors in Every Stage of Reconstruction
•Post-Disaster Livelihood Programme
•Allocate more time to facilitate the learning process of the
community after the reconstruction phase
