Capybaras live in large herds in South America in grasslands, forests, lakes, and swamps. They are herbivores that eat various plants and can consume up to 8 pounds of food per day. Capybaras are highly social animals that live in family groups of up to 100 individuals, with a dominant male leading the group. Female capybaras give birth to litters of 1-6 young twice per year. Capybaras are well adapted to both land and water, able to run quickly on land but also submerge to escape predators in the water.
