Capybara are the world's largest rodents found in South America near water sources. They have small eyes and ears with a heavy rounded body. Capybaras give birth after a 5 month pregnancy to 1-8 young that can swim and dive shortly after birth. As herbivores, they eat plants and leaves from rivers. Predators include jaguars, caimans, and anacondas. Capybaras impact ecosystems as grazers and prey and their populations have declined due to hunting and habitat loss from agriculture and development. Conservation efforts aim to reduce pollution and protect forests.
