There are three types of animal gaits: plantigrade, where the animal walks with its full foot on the ground like squirrels and has a slow running speed; digitigrade, where the animal walks on its toes with its heel raised like dogs and can run at a medium speed; and unguligrade, where the animal walks on nails or hooves like deer and has a very high running speed due to specialized leg bones that help with fast movement.
