■ Imagine a giant family tree for all the animals
in the world! Zoology classification, like a
fancy way of sorting animals, helps us
organize them into groups based on how
similar they are
TAXONOMY
 Kingdom
(Animalia)
 Phylum
 Class
 Order
 Family
 Genus
 Species
Kingdom:
Animalia
KING DOM
 The broadest taxonomic
category. All animals belong to
the kingdom Animalia.
PHYLUM
A group of related classes. Animals
are classified into over 30 phyla,
including Chordata (vertebrates),
Arthropoda (insects, spiders,
crustaceans), and Mollusca (snails,
clams, octopuses).
Phylum
Chordata
Class Mammalia
CLASS
A group of related orders. For example, the
phylum Chordata includes the classes
Mammalia (mammals), Aves (birds), Reptilia
(reptiles), Amphibia (amphibians), and Pisces
(fish).
Order Carnivora
ORDER
 A group of related families. The
class Mammalia includes the
orders Primates (primates),
Carnivora (carnivores),
Artiodactyla (even-toed
ungulates), and Perissodactyla
(odd-toed ungulates).
Family Felidae
FAMILY
 A group of related genera. The order Carnivora
includes the families Felidae (cats), Canidae
(dogs), Ursidae (bears), and Mustelidae
(weasels, skunks, otters).
Genus Panthera
GENUS
A group of related species. The family Felidae
includes the genera Panthera (lions, tigers,
jaguars, leopards), Felis (domestic cats), and
Acinonyx (cheetahs).
Species Panthera leo
SPECIES
 The most fundamental taxonomic unit.
A species is a group of organisms that
can reproduce with one another in
nature and produce fertile offspring.
