I have bled many times in my life. Sometimes I bled from accidents just like others, but many times, the bleeding was intended. For several years, I hurt myself intentionally. I was suicidal on some occasions. I cannot remember when I first started self-harming because living a life distressed me since I was very young. I was born in South Korea, and I grew up there until I was 13 years old. Even though I was Korean myself and spent my childhood there, I did not like living in Korea. When I think about Korea, the first thing that pops up in my head is an anguished memory of me getting bullied.
My experience of getting bullied started when I was in 2nd grade in Elementary school. There was only one sole reason why the students bullied me: I was fat. To make this clear, I was not fat, but I was a little bit chubbier than others. However, the standard of beauty is extremely high in Korea, and I did not belong to the standard of desirable body shape. Therefore, nobody wanted me to be with them, and they either bullied me or avoided me. Having a fat body was a mark of disgrace for me. I was stigmatized in a way because of my “obesity”; people perceived me as devalued and discounted (Connor, 2014). The social institution, the school, which is supposed to help the students to get an education and to socialize, did not help me out of this disaster, but instead, the teachers neglected the fact and pretended they did not know. The intensity of bullying varied. They started out as calling my name incorrectly because they said calling my name would defile their tongues. They did not want to have any form of contact or touch with me, and if part of me touched part of them by accident, they would curse and yell at me because they would have a bad day; I became an expert in avoiding physical contact even in a little space. If they were playing games and they had to do a dare, then they would come up to me and punch me or make uncomfortable sexual jokes. They pretended I was not there when I was right in front of them and talking to them, they ripped my textbooks and notes when I went to the bathroom, they made a group chat that most students in the school were added just to send me a bunch of curse words and offending sexual texts, etc. I used to love running, but I do not run anymore because they would make fun of me when I run. In fact, I hate running now. I hate to show someone of me running.
Bullying never stopped even I became a middle schooler. What hurt me the most was not all these actions from the ones who I did not even know. It was the fact that friends I trusted the most turned their backs on me. This bullying all started with my ex-best friend who was popular, and those few people who became my friends all left me and joined the others. They hurt me or ignored me just like the other on.

PURPOSE OF THE SESSION: To address my concern about Pt’s health and emotional state, refer Pt. to a mental health center, help him cope with the seriousness of his mental health, and assist Pt. will setting up an appointment with a local mental health center.

OBSERVATION: Pt. was affected when I voiced my concern; however he also recognized that he is also worried that he is going to harm himself. Pt. was disappointed and discouraged to seek these professionals help because he has previously been turned away by a couple of the mental health centers on the list that I gave him. He did not want to accept help from his family and repeated affirmed that they would not be able to help him financially to pay to seek this help.

He said: “(puts his head down for a moment) I know that I need help. My mother said that if you can recommend me to a see a psychologist? She said that I need help. ”
I said: “Yes. That is what I am going to do, but I want to make sure that you understand the reason why I am doing this. ”
He said: “(Nods his head) I understand because like I told you before I don’t plan on harming myself, I just do it. Like when I made these scratches here (points at his lower forearm) I was frustrated that I kept doing these to my arm and I didn’t feel it.”
I said: “ Yes. This is why your mother and everyone at this clinic is concerned about your mental health state. Because if you made scratches with a knife and you didn’t feel it, you can do other serious things to yourself which can puts your life in endanger.”
He said: “Where are you calling? Where am I going to ? I have already been to this one place by Van Nuys and it is called something like El Nido and they didn’t help me. From the outside it looks like it’s a building for kids but they also help adults. ”
I said: “Well, here I have a list of different mental health centers and I am going to refer you to once that is more closer to your house. (I show him the list) I was planning of referring you to this clinic (I am pointing to the clinic located in Van Nuys) its called the center of family living have you been there before?”
He said: “I think so. Is it the one that is locate.

- 1. Chandler Sanchez FYS Blanco 02/10/15 Angry Eyes Jane Elliot’s methods, to me, were similar to the “Fire and Brim Stone” method of preaching in a way, just about racism. It was very aggressive and did well at getting the kids to focus, and experience a dose of what she was trying to convey. She wants the students to experience what racism feels like. She wants them to know how terrible and terrifying it can be to go through something like that, she says it is just like simulating it though and not close to the real thing. I agree with this, it seems like it really put this sort of thing into perspective for the students and even myself. The thing is, I do not know if I agree with her all the way. I feel like she only focused on certain races and ethnicities. All discretions aside, I still believe she did a great job.
