Brown Eye vs. Blue Eye

The brown eye- blue eye experiment was quite the eye opener. It was enlightening
to watch as this particular experiment take place. I was blown away by the reactions
of some of the students who had already been told how poorly they were going to be
treated. The students literally knew before hand that they were not going to be
treated nicely or fairly, yet they still managed to find offense in the way that the
instructor spoke to them.
I was surprised by how many used the excuse, “Well I have black friends so
I’m obviously not racist,” or “when I look at you I don’t see black, we are equals.” I
myself have used the “black friends” card to pull myself out of a racist situation. I
now know how incredibly wrong that it was to use that as my way out.
Through observing this experiment, I realized how badly our country still
suffers from racism. No, it may not be as bad as it was in the past, but to those who
are being accused and misjudged, I’m sure it feels like hell. African Americans,
Hispanics, Asians, etc., can’t run away from a racist situation the way that I can. This
video showed me that it’s almost a privilege to be a white American, because unlike
them, I can just get up and avoid a situation when I’m made uncomfortable, they
can’t. Sure they can run away for the moment, but nothing has changed. Their skin is
still dark, they still speak with an accent, they are still being judged by their physical
appearances. The world is so unfair and I was surprised to see the amount of racism
that still remains within the world today.
But it only takes one voice to make a difference. If one person could build up
the courage to stand up for those who have been beaten down by racism, to stand
up for their rights as Americans, the world would be an entirely different place. It
only takes one to create a wave. You just have to be willing to start that wave and
speak up against racism.
