They originated in the Middle Ages but became most prominent after the Council of Trent to make church teachings accessible to a broader audience. Notable authors like Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca used the genre to exalt the Eucharist and spread Catholic doctrine through symbolic and allegorical language. The autos sacramentales were performed on Catholic holidays and feast days and achieved their maximum expression in the works of Calderón de la Barca before being banned in 1765.
