Andy conducted a science fair project on multiple sclerosis (MS) to understand if patching or changing circuits in the brain and spinal cord could slow down the progression of the disease in his mother who has severe MS. He created an experiment using wires to represent nerves in the body and found that the entire wire needs to be wrapped continuously to allow nerve impulses to travel successfully, similar to how damage to the myelin sheath in MS prevents proper nerve signaling. Andy concluded that MS is a chronic neurological condition caused by the immune system attacking the body where there are currently some treatments to delay progression but no cure, and he wants to be a future scientist that finds a cure for the disease.
