Andy Rubin founded Android Inc which was later acquired by Google in 2005. Google then formed the Open Handset Alliance in 2007 to develop the Android operating system. The first commercially available Android phone was the HTC Dream in 2008. The Open Handset Alliance allows companies to use the Android source code and develop applications. Major OHA members include Google, HTC, Samsung and others. Kotlin was announced by Google for Android development at Google I/O 2017 as it reduces boilerplate code and avoids errors while maintaining Java interoperability.
