Introduce a character Introduce a scene
“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want
of a wife.”
Jane Austen: Pride and Prejudice (1813)
"All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."
Leo Tolstoy: Anna Karenina (1878)
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the
epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the
spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going
direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way."
Charles Dickens: A Tale Of Two Cities (1859)
"It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs, and I didn't know what I was
doing in New York."
Sylvia Plath: The Bell Jar (1963)
Introduce a theme
"You don't know about me without you have read a book by the name of 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer'; but that
ain't no matter. That book was made by a Mr Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly.”
Mark Twain: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884)
Reflect: Why are opening lines important?
What is a good question?
English

HARMON
Develop the confidence to ask good questions
Example:
What is the author’s motivation to tell the story?
Halfway through the story we find out “what happened”. What
technique is that? Imagine if in life we aren’t told what is
happening. Why does this work in literature?
Clay is a symbol in the story. What does it represent?
How do you define a hero? What caused the main character
to rise to the occasion?
