The urinary bladder develops during the 18th week of fetal development. It is located in the pelvic cavity behind the pubic symphysis in males and anterior to the uterus in females. The bladder has a muscular wall and receives its blood supply from branches of the internal iliac artery, including the superior and inferior vesical arteries. Nerve supply comes from pelvic splanchnic nerves via the hypogastric plexus and pudendal nerves. The bladder drains lymph into pelvic lymph nodes and is supported by ligaments attached to surrounding structures in the pelvis. Microscopically, it has a mucosa, submucosa, muscularis and adventitia layers.
