Genre:Pop/Punk
Characters- Thisdigipackpresentsthe
stereotypical representationof male rock/pop
stars due to the clothingthattheyare wearing.
On the back coverof thisalbum,the main
singerappearsinall blackclothing.The colours
of thisimage couldhave beenmanipulatedand
changedto blackand white althoughitisclear
that the majorityof hisoutfitisdark, alongwith
hishair.The image onthe CD itself showsa
close mid shotof each memberof the band,
theyare notmakingdirectaddresswiththe
audience whichsuggestsasense of rebellion
whichisstereotypical of thisgenre.Onthe
back of the album,a concertshothas been
used,thisshowsthe atmosphere atone of
theirgigs.It alsoshowsvariousimagesof the
performingonstage,againsituatedinblack/darkclothing.
Narrative events- the image onthe backcoverof the albumshowsanimage of the audience atone
of these gigsalongwithvariousothersof themperforming,thiscouldsuggestthatthe narrative
withincertainsongscouldbe aboutperformingandexcitement. The songsmayalsogive audiences
an insightonwhatattendingone of theirconcertswouldbe like. The coverof the Americanidiot
albumcouldalsosuggestthe narrative of love andheartbreakasthere isa cartoon of a bleeding
heart.Theyare alsoverydismissiveonthe image onthe actual CD whichcouldfurthersuggestthe
theme of heartbreakastheylookquite fedup. The bleedingheartonthe coverof the albumcould
suggestthatthe narrative of the albumisgoingto focuson the theme of love andheartbreak.
Iconography – the use of the colourred isverysignificantwithinthisdigipack,there isavastamount
of thiscolourwhichisstereotypical forthe punkrockgenre asit suggestsa sense of rebellionand
danger.Blackis alsoa colour whichhasbeenuseda lotfor the backgroundwhichcouldreflectthe
darknesswithintheirlyrics. The image onthe frontcovershowsa red heartbeingclutchedbya
hand;thisis a graphic image of a grenade whichappearstobe bleeding.Thissuggeststhata certain
percentage of the albumisgoingto follow the theme of love althoughmostlybasedupon
heartbreak.The rednessof the heartisalsoiconicas it issignificanttothe theme of love. Thisisa
negative topictofocusuponwhichcouldalsobe seenas stereotypical tothisgenre.There are
variouspropsusedon the back coverof the albumincludingdrumsandaguitar,these objectsare
stereotypical of punkrockasmost artistswhobelongtothisgenre playthese typesof instruments.

2. Setting- the settingof the image onthe backof the cover isat one of theirgigs/concerts,thisgivesa
bitof an insighttoaudiencesonwhatone of theirgigswouldlooklike,itmayalsopromote their
tour and will persuadethe targetaudience tobuyticketsandattend.The image onthe coverof the
CD showsthe mainsingerinthe band performinginfrontof crowdof people;thisalsoshowsthe
settingof the albumcoveris at a gig.It is difficulttotell the settingof the bandonthe CD as itis in
blackand white althoughitlookslike theycouldbe onthe streetwithawall andposterbehind
them,andtreesto the right handside.
Technical andaudiocodes- the imagesonthe coverhave beeneditedtomake themlookblackand
white,the image of the audience onthe backof the albumhasalso beeneditedinordertoaddthe
redness,andthisisa stereotypical colourwithinthe punkrockgenre due tothe connotationsof
rebellion,evil anddanger.The grenade shapedlike ahearthasalso obviouslybeengraphically
designedtolooklike acartoon.The albumcoverhas a sense of balance as there isa more or less
equal amountof textand backgroundas there are images.
