1. Analysis
The video ‘Sugar we’re going down’ by Fall Out Boy is a pop
punk video and features common pop punk conventions such as
the band playing on a stage. The band is jumping around while
playing their instruments, which is stereotypical of punk and
rock bands to do when playing their instruments. The bands are
also wearing modern clothing, showing they are of youth. The
lyrics of this video are represented through a narrative, which is
what most rock bands use to in music videos. This is usually
used to represent lyrics, which are difficult to understand.
The music video is non-linear because the video of the jumps
through time; showing a boy and a girl going on numerous dates,
with crosscutting shots back to the band. This jumping through
time goes well with the fast-paced music of the band, which
could suggest things are moving fast between the boy and the
girl.
Fall Out Boy are represented as being young and energetic. The
clothes they wear, which are modern shows this. Also their
behavior on stage where they jump around when playing their
instruments shows they are full of youth and enjoying
themselves. The band performs in a house. The house appears to
be cozy and quiet, which is an unconventional place for the band
to perform.
The audience it is aimed at is 15-30 year olds of a working-class
background. The audience can associate themselves to the band
as the band wear modern working-class which is similar to what
the audience will wear. This is a way the audience can identify
themselves with the band.
