1. Audience
The video I have chosen to do is produced by a punk
rock/pop punk band called The Offspring. The song
is called “Original Prankster” and has proven to be
rather popular throughout their music career.
Music videos for punk rock videos usually focus on
the band and their instruments. I would say that the
video I have chosen is very stereotypical for this
genre. The main reason that music videos are
created is that it could explain the song lyrics
visually, and it’s also another way to advertise
music. The “Original Prankster” music video is very
stereotypical to the gender; there are many reasons
behind this. The first one being that the video mainly
revolves around the band performing live with
instruments in front of a crowd of people. With the
band, there came all of the instruments you would
expect a rock band to use e.g. Guitar, drums, bass.
There were plenty of zoom in’s on the instruments
being played with lots of varied shots. The props
that are used for the music video are related to the
genre of the song, lots of naked girls, expensive cars
(which represent the rock star look) and people
skateboarding which shows the punk side of the
band. Even the outfits that the band use represents
the genre, they’re wearing casual clothing a long
with black sunglasses showing the “cool rock” side
of the song/band.
The title of the song is called “Original Prankster”,
the music video definitely explains the lyrics in the
song and is relevant. It basically shows the audience
a boy growing up pulling pranks on other people. At
the start of the video, it shows a man and a flashback
to his older mischievous years. The image to the
right shows the way in which the flashback is
complete, a smart elliptical edit into the eye then
zooming back out. This means that the video is non-
linear because it isn’t in order, it goes back in time.
There are direct links with the music video and the
lyrics of the song although there is no actual pattern
with the song. In the video, the pranks that some of
the people play are rather funny and relevant to the
song. For example, the boy picks up a piece of dog
poo and puts it in his dad’s sandwich.
2. The Offspring attempt to make themselves look cool
and funny and represent it through the video. These
characteristics of the punk rock genre that The
Offspring are categorized in. It is done through how it
shows the band playing live and the stylish clothing
that they are wearing. It is also show by the amount of
half naked girls around in the video in bikinis, this
stereotypes the punk rock genre. The Screenshot to
the right shows this.
The obvious audience for the music video is for people
who are a fan of punk rock. This is because this song is
one of the most stereotypical songs you’ll ever see.
Thanks to the cars, girls, skaters and live band. I feel
the main thing that attracts the audience to the video
is the fact that the band are playing and the zoom-ins
of the instruments.
