2. INDIE ROCK
➤ The following bands that I will be looking at are:
➤ The kooks
➤ The wombats
➤ Blossoms
➤ The strokes
3. THE KOOKS
The Kooks are an English indie rock band formed in 2004 in
Brighton. Their music is primarily influenced by the 1960s British
Invasion movement and post-punk revival of the new millennium.
Their star image consists of being more alternative and more
about the music rather than the lifestyle that comes with it.
4. THE WOMBATS
The Wombats are an English indie rock band formed in Liverpool
in 2003. The group met while they were in university and
released several EPs before their 2006 album. Their star image
is similar to the kooks in the fact that they are more alternative
than a main stream pop band and that it’s all about making
music.
5. BLOSSOMS
Blossoms are an English indie rock band from Stockport, Greater
Manchester. Formed in 2013.They were on the BBC's Sound Of
new music list for 2016 where they finished in fourth place. The
star image on Blossoms consists more alternative. This is shown
through their clothing and their music.
6. THE STROKES
The Strokes are an American indie rock band from New York
City. Formed in 1998. debut album ‘Is This It’ was released in
2001 and reached number 2 in the UK charts. The band has
continued to release new music through Casablancas' Cult
Records. The star image of the strokes consists of making music
that is catchy and alternative this is also shows in their alternative
fashion sense which is very retro.

8. SYMBOLIC CONVENTIONS: THE
WOMBATS AND THE STROKES➤ In the videos for both of these bands we see many symbolic
conventions that are tied to the indie rock genre. For instance both
videos are performance based to show off the band and their skill at
playing the instruments. We also see another symbolic convention in
the wombats video when we see the school children singing implying
that the video is more child like and fun this is also backed up by the
note pad that gets dropped on the floor and has a animation on it of
TNT being blown up. In the beginning of the strokes video we see
them getting ready for instance having a drink or standing by the
side of the mic to get ready. This symbolises that the song is about
to start and something big is about to happen. This is also backed up
when the chorus coms in and we see the guitarist turn one of the
dials on his guitar and the music becomes more punchy and
energetic.
9. SYMBOLIC CONVENTIONS: THE
KOOKS AND BLOSSOMS➤ In the videos for both of these bands we see many symbolic
conventions that are tied to the indie rock genre. For instance both
videos are narrative based to show more of a story and less about
the actual playing of the instruments. We see symbolic conventions
of a break up in the kooks video when we see the main singer and
his girlfriend in a room back to back nat talking to each other. This is
backed up when we see a shot of the lead singer walk into a toilet
and we see another guy and his girlfriend walk out of the cubical. We
also see symbolic conventions of love in Both videos. We can see
this when Both lead singers are going after or trying to find a girl. We
also conventions of death in the blossoms video when the whole
band is lying down on the floor with gold coins over their eyes. This
symbolises death and is how people of importance were buried in
the roman empire.
10. TECHNICAL CONVENTIONS: THE
WOMBATS AND THE STROKES➤ In both of these videos we see very fast editing when the
chorus kicks in to the the punchy manic side of both videos.
We also see a lot of close ups of all the band members faces
along with the drummers and guitarists hands, thus enforcing
the manic nature of the videos. The set for the strokes video is
very basic as to focus more on the band and them playing.
Whilst in the wombats video the set starts of very simple and
then they use a green screen to put images up whilst the band
is floating in mid air. The same goes for lighting the strokes
videos is very simple and well lit the whole way through. whilst
on the other hand the wombats video starts simple and then
they use effects and a green screen.
11. TECHNICAL CONVENTIONS: THE
KOOKS AND BLOSSOMS➤ In the kooks video we see a lot of close ups and follow cams
of the lead singer as to tell the story of the video. We also see
a lot of side shots as to show where he is in the club and what
is going on. In regards to lighting the first part of the video is lit
by the lights out side as he walks in to the club. When he goes
in side everything is lit red as to suggest that something bad is
going to happen. In the blossoms video we see a lot of close
ups again of the lead singer and we also see a lot of dutch
tilts. In regards to lighting for the Blossoms video it changes
from high key to low key alot (its pulses). They also put smoke
in the set as to highlight the bold blue coulters of the set.
14. COMPARISONS AND DIFFERENCES
➤ We see on the blossoms and the kooks digipaks that they both
have an image of the whole band on the front as to the show
what the band looks like. But in the wombats and the strokes
digipaks that they are a lot more abstract and colourful. This
reinforces their star image of being more alternative and in
your face. In regards to similarities we see that all the bands
apart from the wombats have the name of the band clearly
labeled on the front. I think the best one out of all of them is
the kooks one as it is simple and shows the whole band.
20. COMPARISONS AND DIFFERENCES
➤ All the bands apart from the strokes have a homage with a
picture of the band on it. Instead the strokes have a animation
that is in a timer that changes every couple of seconds. All the
bands have tour information, news on the band, songs and
videos. All the bands stick with the same colour scheme
throughout there websites apart from the strokes which once
again changes by each section. I think this is very smart as it
highlights the sections more clearly.
21. WHAT I THINK WAS THE BEST
CAMPAIGN➤ I think that the blossoms have the best campaign over all
because they have a simple digipak and an easy to use
website. The digipak and the website shoe pictures of the
band so the consumers and fans know what they are getting
and I think the video was the best shot and the most creative.
