4. The Internet
The Difference between the internet and the World Wide
Web:
• The Internet is a global interconnection of computer
networks
• The World Wide Web is a way to navigate this massive
network. In sailing terms, it's like comparing an ocean to a
ship.
• As Arpanet grew so did its benefits. Academics,
officials, technicians and scientists could communicate
with each other quite easily and were readily able to
share information. It increasingly attracted the
attention of organizations outside the US and as other
countries joined the network they helped it grow even
faster. This internationalization of the Internet
helped give its name – an International Network;
hence Internet.
• Of course, with improved technology and supporting
infrastructure, the Internet eventually became available
to smaller computer networks and to individual users.
From being an unfriendly, command-driven
environment, the Internet was friendly to use. The
advantages of having huge amounts of information
available at your finger tips and accessible in a userfriendly way, helped in attracting the large numbers of
users that we see on the Internet today, already
numbering in excess of 670 million.
6. The World Wide Web is Created
• In 1990, Tim Berners-Lee
developed a system designed
to simplify navigation on the
Internet. In time, this system
became known as the World
Wide Web.
9. The First Web Browsers
• The first web browser was invented in
1990 by Sir Tim Berners-Lee. It was called
Worldwide Web and was later renamed
Nexus. The first commonly available web
browser with a graphical user interface
was Erwise. The development of Erwise
was initiated by Robert Cailliau.
• In 1993, browser software was further
innovated by Marc Andreessen with the
release of Mosaic (later Netscape), "the
world's first popular browser",[4] which
made the World Wide Web system easy to
use and more accessible to the average
person.
11. Web 1.0 – the first generation
WEB 1.0
• When the world wide web began the
users could only gain access to a
limited number of websites which
were owned by business companies
and news networks.
• Hence there was less data and
content available and hence there
was a lack of sources for many
subjects on the internet as only
10,000 website developers and
publishers existed for 500,000,000
users.
• Most websites were static webpages
13. The shortcomings of this new technology
STAKE HOLDERS:
• The people who began websites only began
websites so that they could earn money
through advertisements and forgot that their
website must be attractive for people to visit
them and see the website
• Most of the web developers were taking loans
from venture capitalists to make websites
promising good returns
• The venture capitalists were at a big loss if the
website did not take off
MAJOR PROBLEM !!!
“The web developers and companies saw the web as
publishing ,not participation
-Read Write Web ,not Read Only Web”
SOCIETY:
• Most Websites were read only
• Most business companies were just providing
an online version of their catalogue in the form
of webpages on their website
• Most of the search engines were not very good
• Webpages had to be reloaded each time if the
user made a change in the widget available on
the website
• The internet was also very slow during this
time ,hence loading heavy websites with lots of
data took lots of time to load and sometimes
even failed after some time
• The web had begun but was not organized
properly
14. The DOT com crash
• People had misunderstood the internet market leading to failures and losses. The websites were not attractive
deigned around the wrong philosophy and soon customers were disinterested and many websites began to shut
down.
• Apart from the major companies and websites only a few remained.
• Google and Amazon were the only few newly launched websites which remained.
16. So what was the new idea?
Information
The idea-collaboration-get the users involved
• The idea was to allow users as well to generate data onto the internet as this would lead to a rapid increase of
content and sources available
• The user could upload his data on a blog or on a website which allowed you to upload information and share it or
make it public
17. How did they implement their idea?
• Implementation of dynamic websites which
allowed users to interact with the website and
share ideas through posts and comments
• To create these new type of websites new
languages like PHP ,Java Script were adopted by
many websites
• Even if a user did not own or have a personal
website he could yet have his own webpage
thanks to the idea of social networking which
allowed users to sign and build up information
on their website as well have webpages of their
own upon which they could upload data.
18. HOW DID THIS BENEFIT THE WEBSITE
OWNERS?
• Now users were generating their content and data by reviews and documents.
• These sites were now designed around the user and allowed the user to share information in
a faster manner
• In 1999 this idea was implemented to help improve the economy of this industry
• By 2000 NASDAQ reported that the value of this industry had doubled by the implementation
of this idea.
It got better as more and more people used it
19. NEW FEATURES OF WEB 2.0
• Dynamic Webpages
• Refined search
• Better search engines available
• User Website Interaction
• Web Apps improved
• Newer protocols and technologies allowed webpages to
load faster. Also as the webpages were now well organized
due to content management systems it was faster to send
data.
• Social Networking sites
20. Types of Websites in Web 2.0
• Blogs
• Social Networking Sites
• E-commerce sites
• Forums
• Media Sharing
Websites
22. Examples of Websites which adopted the Web 2.0
strategy
• WIKIPEDIA
• Wikipedia is a website which
allows users to create pages on
various topics an upload them. The
range of the topics is very wide
and pages on various topics can
be found with a vast amount of
information on them.
• There fore it is even referred to as
the worlds largest encyclopedia.
• And the best part about this
website is that the data is
organized well and that users can
23. Viewing the Internet as a Market Place(ecommerce)
With the introduction of a redefined search engine
and search technique organizations decided to sell
goods online as this would reduce their overheads as
they would not need to have so much floor space
and shelves to display items and lesser salesmen
would be required. Hence their profits would
increase as well and also people could now access
their store form anywhere in the world without
visiting it.
Also now it was easier to sell items which could not
be found easily as people could now view them from
the internet.
Also some items could be found cheaper and due to
the development of new faster web apps the user
could bid for an item being auctioned through the
site.
24. Social Media Marketing on Social Networks
• SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING is one of the
biggest and most significant results of
Web 2.0. Websites like Facebook, Orkut,
LinkedIn, Twitter, Myspace, You Tube, etc.
are the top visited websites.
• It is because networking is one of the
most essential needs in today’s world..
• Thus, two-thirds of the total number of
internet users visit social media websites
daily. It has become an addiction to many.
• Companies market themselves on these websites via
advertisements which pop up on the side of the
webpage or before the webpage is loaded
25. THE CONS AND PROBLEMS
• Users upload the information but no one was gets paid for providing
this information
• This makes them very unhappy as people are getting valuable
information for free
• Information overload. Too much information is daily posted by many
people with different thought. This creates confusion for the readers
and the quality of the content is not reliable.
• Freedom to post views and comments provides good opportunities
for competitors and rivals to post negative comments about other
companies.
28. The semantic web is all
about data integration. It
is an infrastructure
technology and
organized approach
towards meta data.
Existed Data is reconnected
and Improved for a better
and faster user experience
29. The Semantic Web-3.0 (Search results redefined)
• The main purpose of the Semantic Web is driving the
evolution of the current Web by enabling users to
find, share, and combine information more easily.
• The idea is to make the internet as smart or as
intelligent such that it can perform search tasks over
websites to find a certain piece of data in a shorter
period of time than what the average human would
take.
• This function would help users find what they are
looking for faster as well as will have the capability to
filter websites which are useless to the user
• The user can search for the cheapest air fares or best
recipe or find the information he is looking for on the
first webpage he sees
• It is said that the semantic web may also have the
capability to find and list all relevant information for
the user on one page itself
33. Web 4.0-The Personal Assistant
Although Web 4.0 still is in
developing mode and the true
shape is still forming, first signals
are in that Web 4.0 will be about a
linked web which communicates
with us like we communicate with
each other (like a personal
assistant). Web 4.0 is called
“symbiotic” web
34. According to the futurist and business strategist and
Big Think blogger Daniel Burrus
The Web 4.0 will be:
• "the ultra-intelligent electronic
agent.“
• the screen-less smartphone
which may be a piece of jewelry
DURING THE WEB 1.0 ERA THE ORGANIZATION OR PERSON OPERATING THE WEBSITE PROVIDED TEXT AND IMAGES TO BE VIEWED BY THE VISITORS .BASICALLY IT DID NOT ALLOW ANY PARTICIPATION.
