Network topologies include single node, bus, star, ring, mesh, tree, and hybrid. The physical arrangement of devices in a network defines its topology. Topologies like star and bus are easier to install and manage while ring and mesh provide better fault tolerance and handle high traffic volumes but require more complex cabling. The choice of topology depends on network size, budget, and fault tolerance requirements.
The document discusses network topologies and their characteristics. It describes physical and logical topologies. Common topologies include mesh, star, bus, ring, tree and hybrid configurations. Mesh provides redundancy but is expensive to implement while star is popular for its ease of installation and fault isolation. Bus uses the least cabling but a single break disables the network. Ring passes signals in one direction making it susceptible to breaks. Hybrid combines different topologies to balance advantages and disadvantages. The optimal topology depends on factors like cost, growth and cable requirements.

From leased lines to optical spectrum servicesADVA
This document discusses optical spectrum as a service, which allows communication service providers (CSPs) to sell unused optical spectrum. Advances in coherent transport and flexgrid open line systems now enable CSPs to segment spectrum into slices and assign them to different users. This transforms spectrum into a new service that CSPs can offer beyond traditional leased lines. Realizing spectrum as a service requires an open line system with programmable spectrum allocation, flexible grid technology, service demarcation functions, and network slicing through open control and management. Several examples demonstrate how spectrum services are being implemented in multi-domain and multi-operator networks.
The document discusses the shift towards using coherent optical technology at the network edge. It argues that 100G QSFP28 ports using coherent 100ZR technology will dominate the optical edge in the coming years. This will allow for longer transmission reaches of over 300km compared to traditional direct detection. Key advantages of coherent 100ZR include lower power consumption of 5W or less in a QSFP28 form factor, simplified deployment without manual tuning, and compatibility with existing network infrastructure. The technology could enable seamless upgrades to 100G speeds at aggregation points across access networks.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

Introduction of Cybersecurity with OSS at Code Europe 2024Hiroshi SHIBATA
I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.

[OReilly Superstream] Occupy the Space: A grassroots guide to engineering (an...Jason Yip
The typical problem in product engineering is not bad strategy, so much as “no strategy”. This leads to confusion, lack of motivation, and incoherent action. The next time you look for a strategy and find an empty space, instead of waiting for it to be filled, I will show you how to fill it in yourself. If you’re wrong, it forces a correction. If you’re right, it helps create focus. I’ll share how I’ve approached this in the past, both what works and lessons for what didn’t work so well.

Business challenges
With the introduction of DOCSIS 3.0, many cable operators will start to
consolidate their clustered networks towards streamlined operations. This
will include a dramatic reduction in the number of content hubs hosting
video servers, satellite broadcast receivers and Internet peering points.
Combined with expected bandwidth growth in coming years, network
migration can only be supported by building new backbone networks
based on highly scalable optical transport technology offering simplicity,
scalability and disruptive cost-per-bit metrics.
Another trend associated with bandwidth growth in cable networks is the
migration of Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTS) closer to the end
user, therefore increasing the available capacity by reducing cluster sizes.
Efficient and reliable backhaul of broadband traffic from new CMTS
locations becomes an additional challenge for cable operators, leading to
deployment of fiber deeper into the access network and the adoption of
Ethernet-centric optical backhaul technology. Critical also to business
services is the requirement for very high network availability and this is
another consideration for cable operators in their network evolution
planning.
Solution
The ideal solution for the transport network of cable operators consists of
a flexible, resilient optical layer with integrated sub-wavelength
aggregation for Ethernet client signals. ADVA Optical Networking’s FSP
3000 WDM transport solution implements a flexible optical layer with
combination of two-degree and multi-degree ROADMs to maximize the
efficiency of the network through optical bypass and to enable in-service
network extension. Controlled by a sophisticated GMPLS control
