An innovative virtual method for providing
eTourism education in a university network:

Background of the study
The industry (and the academia) need eTourism skills and knowledge
•eTourism defines the competitiveness of travel destinations and
companies (Mazanec et al., 2007)
•Online business is a not just the responsibility of an IT or marketing
department
– eTourism skills and knowledge are increasingly needed in various
positions in hospitality and tourism field.
•How do we teach our students about eTourism?
•Profilitaritation of ICTs for educational purposes, e.g. MOOCs

•ICTs are transforming education
– Traditional lectures are no longer needed
– Various online tools enable learning that is not dependant on the place
or time
– Virtual learning
•Finland is a large country with many small universities
– 14 research universities
– 23 universities of applied sciences
• 13 with bachelor level hospitality education (restonomi)
•Co-operation is needed as resources are scarce.

•Idea came from the industry and their need for people that can do
online business in tourism.
•Started in 2012 by collecting information on eTourism education in
Finnish UAS
– Who, where and what?
– Interest in developing a co-operation network
•No external resources were needed, all actors involved with their own
resources.
•First a network of industry members, eTourism teachers and heads of
academic affairs from various universities was created.
– E-mail, DropBox, BaseCamp, Facebook, Skype for business
•2013 and 2014 course contents and operating model creation.

How ICTs can be used to develop a nation wide eTourism curriculum?
UEF // University of Eastern Finland
• Each educational institution in the network commits to providing one 5 ECTS course
in its field of expertise for its own students and students in the other member
institutions in the network.
• Six educational institutions (Haaga-Helia UAS provides two courses) -> 35 credits
• Courses are in Open Moodle system by Lapland University of Applied Sciences or
UAS own systems.
• The member institutions in the network signed a two-year agreement in which they
committed to the following matters: 1) Annual teacher resources for 5 credits, 2)
Resourcing for the overall development according to the educational institution’s
own practices, 3) Registration of students for the course and recording of the grades,
and 4) The educational institution's share of the costs of the OpenMoodle system
(about €300–500 / term depending on the number of students in the system).
• It was decided to provide all courses in English. There is a need for courses in English
in the member institutions and, also, most of the material in the subject area is in
English. The courses can also be provided for international students as this kind of
study module is exceptional at international level as well.

•The education in digital business in tourism in the network began in
the summer of 2016.
•The network is coordinated by the University of Eastern Finland.

•2) Haaga-Helia, Porvoo: Electronic Distribution in Tourism
•3) Satakunta UAS: Online Marketing in Tourism
•4) Laurea UAS: Business Online Visibility
•5) Karelia UAS: Gamification in Tourism Marketing
•6) JAMK UAS: Future Applications and Trends of Tourism

•7) Lapland UAS: Managing eTourism.

•Continuous registration for the courses
•When courses start the teacher sends information to all registered
participants
•Each university has a contact person that adds the credits to
registry after a student has completed a course.

Conclusions
•ICTs enable new forms of co-operation between universities.
•Saving considerable resources while providing wide range of
courses.
•Universities pay to their own staff and their own students benefit
from the courses.
•Development of teaching skills.
•Students are more interesting for companies to hire.

UEF // University of Eastern Finland Background of the study The industry (and the academia) need eTourism skills and knowledge •eTourism defines the competitiveness of travel destinations and companies (Mazanec et al., 2007) •Online business is a not just the responsibility of an IT or marketing department – eTourism skills and knowledge are increasingly needed in various positions in hospitality and tourism field. •How do we teach our students about eTourism? •Profilitaritation of ICTs for educational purposes, e.g. MOOCs 2

UEF // University of Eastern Finland •ICTs are transforming education – Traditional lectures are no longer needed – Various online tools enable learning that is not dependant on the place or time – Virtual learning •Finland is a large country with many small universities – 14 research universities – 23 universities of applied sciences • 13 with bachelor level hospitality education (restonomi) •Co-operation is needed as resources are scarce. 3 eTourismCurriculum Finland (www.etourismcurriculum.fi)

UEF // University of Eastern Finland •Idea came from the industry and their need for people that can do online business in tourism. •Started in 2012 by collecting information on eTourism education in Finnish UAS – Who, where and what? – Interest in developing a co-operation network •No external resources were needed, all actors involved with their own resources. •First a network of industry members, eTourism teachers and heads of academic affairs from various universities was created. – E-mail, DropBox, BaseCamp, Facebook, Skype for business •2013 and 2014 course contents and operating model creation. 4 How ICTs can be used to develop a nation wide eTourism curriculum?

UEF // University of Eastern Finland • Each educational institution in the network commits to providing one 5 ECTS course in its field of expertise for its own students and students in the other member institutions in the network. • Six educational institutions (Haaga-Helia UAS provides two courses) -> 35 credits • Courses are in Open Moodle system by Lapland University of Applied Sciences or UAS own systems. • The member institutions in the network signed a two-year agreement in which they committed to the following matters: 1) Annual teacher resources for 5 credits, 2) Resourcing for the overall development according to the educational institution’s own practices, 3) Registration of students for the course and recording of the grades, and 4) The educational institution's share of the costs of the OpenMoodle system (about €300–500 / term depending on the number of students in the system). • It was decided to provide all courses in English. There is a need for courses in English in the member institutions and, also, most of the material in the subject area is in English. The courses can also be provided for international students as this kind of study module is exceptional at international level as well. 5 Operation model

UEF // University of Eastern Finland Course contents •The education in digital business in tourism in the network began in the summer of 2016. •The network is coordinated by the University of Eastern Finland. •1) Haaga-Helia, Helsinki: E-business in Tourism and Hospitality •2) Haaga-Helia, Porvoo: Electronic Distribution in Tourism •3) Satakunta UAS: Online Marketing in Tourism •4) Laurea UAS: Business Online Visibility •5) Karelia UAS: Gamification in Tourism Marketing •6) JAMK UAS: Future Applications and Trends of Tourism Technology •7) Lapland UAS: Managing eTourism. 6

UEF // University of Eastern Finland Process •www.etourismcurriculum.fi •Continuous registration for the courses •When courses start the teacher sends information to all registered participants •Each university has a contact person that adds the credits to registry after a student has completed a course. 7
