On February 12, 1947 a large meteor exploded over the Sikhote-Alin Mountains in eastern Russia. The meteor exploded in the atmosphere with an energy equivalent to around 500 kilotons of TNT. Fragments of the meteor were scattered across the region and have been recovered, allowing scientists to study the composition of the meteor and the effects of atmospheric explosions.
