Carolina was established in 1670 by settlers from Barbados who founded Charles Town, later called Charleston. To encourage more settlers, the proprietors promised religious freedom and land grants. Many early colonists arrived as indentured servants. Carolina split into North and South Carolina in 1691, with Charleston as the capital of South Carolina. The colonists traded extensively with local Indians, exchanging guns for captives and runaways, making the Indians dependent on the colonists for supplies and defense.
