Allusions In Scarlet Letter
In On the Scarlet Letter D.H. Lawrence criticizes Nathaniel Hawthorne's portrayal of Hester Prynne
in the novel The Scarlet Letter. He describes the actions of Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale to
illustrate and criticize the sinfulness present in the story. D.H. Lawrence uses literary allusions, a
sarcastic tone, and an informal and direct syntax to achieve his purpose of arguing that Hester
Prynne is a sinner with malicious qualities who does not deserve the praise Hawthorne gives her.
Lawrence incorporates certain literary allusions in his criticism to draw parallels that emphasize his
claim that Hester Prynne is an over–respected and malicious being. When Lawrence writes,
"Deerslayer reduced to be seduced by Judith Hutter," he is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

By including sarcastic and extreme language in his criticism, Lawrence is challenging the
seriousness of the story and its characters. Lawrence includes the phrase, "Because the greatest thrill
in life is to bring down the Sacred Saint with a flop into the mud." Of course, he is not being serious
when he speaks about the "greatest thrill in life", but through the use of this exaggeration of
language, Lawrence is able to emphasize his claim. By critiquing her as not serious and sinful
through the use of sarcasm, Lawrence conveys the point that Hester is a tricky woman. Lawrence is
saying that Hawthorne is wrong in portraying Hester as a victim as she enjoys bringing people
down. Also, when Lawrence writes, "Whatever you do, don't let her start tickling you. She knows
your weakspot," he is using ridiculous language to show the reader that Hester Prynne's actions are,
in fact, ridiculous. He is criticizing Hester Prynne by turning her into a jocular character, when that
was not Nathaniel Hawthorne's intention. Lawrence's use of sarcasm forces the reader to view
Hester Prynne in a new light and really question whether she deserves Hawthorne's

The Literary Offences Of Fenimore Cooper
The definition of art has been debated time and time again, but there is still not a concrete line
drawn between what is defined as art and what is not. However, there are certain works of art that
set the example for what other works of art should contain. Specifically, according to Ernest
Hemingway, an American author from the early twentieth century, "all modern American literature
comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. American writing comes from that.
There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since". In other words, Hemingway
stated that Mark Twain had laid the foundation for modern American writers who strive to create
works of art through literature. Twain directly refers to how a work of literature should constitute art
in his essay "The Literary Offenses of Fenimore Cooper" where he criticizes Deerslayer for not
reaching the requirements of literary art that Twain describes. He stresses the idea that everything in
the literary work should "accomplish something and arrive somewhere", have correct and definite
personage that makes sense, care about the characters in the story, and have proper diction. In Mark
Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, he successfully applies the appropriate aesthetic and
literary values that he holds literature to in his essay on the violation of literary art in Fenimore
Cooper's Deerslayer through his purposeful portrayal of Huckleberry Finn and his endeavors. Mark

Munro has clear boundaries. Inside his fort, he was master and overseer of all. Outside the fort, he
had to rely on the "uncivilized" wisdom of the younger men like Uncas. Munro is at a disadvantage,
in the "outlands of America." Hawkeye is almost completely void of boundaries. He is an Indian's
white man. He knows most Indian dialects, most of the Indian leaders, and a great deal about their
culture. Hawkeye is virtually an Indian. He does not hesitate to stretch his boundaries, especially in
defense of his friends, even attempting to be the scapegoat for Cora when Magua is given
permission by Tamenund, the old leader of the Delaware Indians, to take her captive. Munro has
clear boundaries; Hawkeye does not. Munro is a powerful man inside his boundaries, but Hawkeye
is an influential man wherever he goes. While Munro is clearly respected by all his men, Hawkeye's
plans and comments are valued by all that know him. The boundaries of Munro are clear. Hawkeye's

Essay on The American Hero
The American Hero
Every child has fantasy's of being a super hero and leaping tall buildings in a single bound or staring
death in the face everyday and somehow finding a way to escape. All of these imaginative thoughts
have been derived from the past literary works by the great writers of the early American literary
period. These early writers entered society into a world of action and adventure, where one can see
spectacular events unfolding through the eyes of a notorious man of courage and feel as though they
are defending there country or saving the woman they love. Though the modern heroes are much
more popular than classic American heroes, the modern hero has rooted from these same literary

'In The Deerslayer, Natty is seen as and idealized youth. Natty is later seen wondering through the
forest and lonely waters and is confronted by hunters, Indians, and the hostile Europeans'; (Groliers

his kind in American literature and was seen nowhere before by the American readers. This novel
allowed the readers to enter a world where they could relive the Revolutionary War, Indian wars,
and battles on the frontier.
After The Deer Slayer, Natty Bumppo is seen in The Last of the Mohicans. In this novel, Natty is
called Hawkeye because of his ties to the Mohicans. Indians of this time were looked upon as
savages, 'but Natty has taken unto himself the best of both civilization and so–called savagery';
(Cliff Notes 11). Because he made peace with the Indians, he had a mysterious and dangerous
quality in the eyes of the reader. In this novel Natty has many close native companions to join him in
his endeavors on the frontier.

The Deerslayer "The Deerslayer," the first novel in the "Leatherstocking Tales" chronologically, yet
it was the last one written by James Fenimore Cooper. "The Deerslayer", also known as "The First
War–Path", is a masterpiece of suspense, adventure, and romance crafted by James Cooper in his
later years. The tales of Natty Bumppo, more commonly known as Deerslayer or Leatherstocking,
considered by many to be some of the earliest true American novels. Occurring during the early
1740 is as the wars between the French and Indians kindled, the story of Natty Bumppo begins.

Though these conversations where over extended, they help recognize Cooper as great thinker.
Readers may pass on reading this American classic based on its size. Though it may seem large at
522 pages, it barely does it justice since so much could be added on to it. Thought it may start slow
in the beginning, it is there where most of the breath taking descriptions of Lake Glimmerglass are
located. As one continues reading, the action does not start until the middle of the tale. Nevertheless,
once one reaches it the wait is rewarded .Cooper's writing style does take a time to get used to it so
in the beginning one may find themselves reading chapters to see what may have been missed or to
see if what was read was miss interpreted. As the reader reads, it becomes easier to understand
Cooper's use of words and style throughout the tale. Though The Deerslayer was the last to be
published in the series, it starts the American classic of hero Natty Bumppo. All in all the first taste
of Copper's series The Leatherstocking Tales leaves a reader receives through The Deerslayer is
more than satisfying and makes the reader thirst for more.

James Fenimore Cooper: The Last Of The Mochians
From the beginning of time stories always have always been told, and authors have always been
known for their works. In today's society most movies come from an old story, just like the Marvel
series today. Marvel stories were once comic books that are now one of the biggest movie franchise
in the world. There is one author that stands above all and is unlike any other, James Fenimore
Cooper is a 1700th century author. His style of writing is not like anything that you see in most
stories. In each of his stories he shows his feelings to the world and describes what he believes
through stories. In the years James Cooper lived much was accomplished and when he wrote it was
always a directed message,it was never just made up.

Hyperbole Scarlet Letter
D.H. Lawrence writes about Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter in his essay "On The
Scarlet Letter". Instead of writing a traditional essay on the novel, Laurence creates a unique
criticism of the novel through a sense of rhythm. He uses several literary devices to reach this goal
of creating an effective criticism. More specifically, D.H. Lawrence uses the literary devices of
hyperbole, syntax, and allusion to craft an effective criticism of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet
Letter. The author creates an effective criticism of Hawthorne's work through his use of hyperbole
throughout his essay. For example, Laurence criticizes how Hester Prynne is "put upon [a] scaffold
and worship[ed]" (Lawrence). Through this extreme statement, ... Show more content on

An example of this is when he references James Fenimore Cooper's work Deerslayer when he
discusses how "Deerslayer refused to be seduced by Judith Hutter" (Lawrence). By alluding to
Cooper's work, Lawrence references how the character Deerslayer resists Judith Hutter's seduction.
Through this, he makes the criticism of another path that Hawthorne could have taken. Instead of
simply giving in to Hester's seduction, the author makes the point that Dimmesdale could have
resisted Hester's attempts of seduction. This would have driven the story and would have created a
more realistic situation for the reverend. Another allusion the author makes is when he says "Abel!
Abel! Abel! Admirable!" (Lawrence). Through this biblical reference, he criticizes Hester is
portrayed to be an innocent victim by comparing her to Abel, the son of Adam and Eve and the
murder victim of his brother Cain. Consequently, Laurence criticizes that Hester is too much of a
victim and that this trait dehumanizes her character and creates a sort of innocent and moral ideal.
This builds upon Lawrence's claim that Hawthorne created Hester with the flaw of being too
morally justified and

literature in America Essay
When I think of America, I think of freedom. We live in a country where we can do what we choose.
We can express our opinions and live our own lives. Individuals can form their own individual
beliefs and they can do what they want and pursue what they wish. They can play basketball, go to
school, get a job, have a family, buy a house, or go to church. We are free. We have opportunity to
be whatever we want to make ourselves. When you ask, what is an American? I find it no different
to ask, what is freedom? America and freedom are intertwined and this relationship is evident in
American literature.
The notion of freedom and everything relating to freedom unites all of the American literature we
have read. In Twain's Huckleberry Finn, Huck ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Self Reliance, Emerson explains that our freedom to choose and our ability to think what we want
to think define what America is. I believe it is characteristic of Americans to strive for what they
think is right. In Poe's the House of Usher, Usher decided to bury his sister alive. I think this story
can relate to us today. Many people would say that America is known for persevering through rough
times. I'd say the last few years have been a rough time for America, from 9/11 to now––the war in
Iraq. Sometimes situations may seem unbeatable, like being trapped in a coffin, but if you fight hard
enough, like we are against the terrorists and in Iraq, you can overcome anything. American's can
overcome anything. Usher's sister was buried alive and finally broke from the coffin after a week of
struggle. Also, many of the authors we have studied describe nature in riveting detail. To them and
to me, our beautiful nature represents something more then just what you see with your eye–it
represents America's freedom. In Emerson's Nature, Thorpe's The Big Bear of Arkansas, Twain's
Huckleberry Finn, Bryant's Thanatopsis, and Edwards' Shadows of Divine Things, we see an
apparent love and lust of nature by the authors. The great aspects of nature represent the great
aspects of America–freedom. The mountains and trees scatter in nature in pure harmony just like the
American people live freely in America. The authors had a fascination

Critical Analysis : Hester Prynne
In the critical essay On the Scarlet Letter , D.H. Lawrence depicts Hester Prynne as a seductive but
demonic woman who craves the downfall of holy men. Prynne has been a subject of debate since the
publication of The Scarlet Letter . While some believe she is a tragic heroine, others suggest that she
is a personification of all things unholy. Hawthorne takes the stance that Hester is a strong and
independent heroine, but D.H. Lawrence argues otherwise. Lawrence persuades his audience that
Hester is nothing more than an adulteress with mocking syntax, sarcastic diction, and derogatory
allusions. D.H. Lawrence's mocking syntax is like a taunt aimed at Prynne and at Hawthorne. In the
essay, Lawrence makes multiple references to the scarlet letter, "A. Adulteress! Stitched with gold
thread, glittering upon the bosom." Here, he is making a mockery of the scarlet letter and all that it
stands for. The arrangement and rhythm of the words make for a notable sing–song lilt, the same
rhythm that is typical of a challenge. The syntax is also choppy, as demonstrated with the constant
repetition of words. Lawrence speaks in short fragments,

Mark Twain's Personality Revealed in His Writing Essay
Mark Twain's Personality Revealed in His Writing
Literary artists refuse to be categorized, defined, and completely fathomed by any standardized
paradigm, but a writer's work exhibits his or her personality traits. Though authors are incapable of
being defined by mere personality traits, literary accomplishments, and literary criticisms, an
author's personality can be used to sketch a limited definition of his or her literature. Mark Twain's
literature manifests his personality's candor, graphicness, humor, and criticalness that William Dean
Howells describes in "My Mark Twain." These attributes are evident in "Old Times on the
Mississippi," The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras
County," ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the theme of deception pervades Twain's work, truth always emanates from both the plot
and characters.
While many Romantic authors elevate their childhoods to idealistic terms of good or bad, Twain
walks the line between Romanticism and Realism. After romantically heralding the position of a
steamboatman in Old Times on the Mississippi, a young Mark Twain realizes and expresses his new
belief on the unfairness of life because of his recent knowledge about the rise of an ungodly boy to
the position of a steamboatman. Twain writes, "This thing shook the bottom out of all my Sunday–
school teachings" (275). Instead of glossing over his young self's questioning nature, Twain
acknowledges the ability to question the authority of the church, even if it is based on jealousy.
Similar in honesty and naivete to the young Twain is the forthright Huckleberry Finn. He will not
accept society's conventions about both religion and history, and he denounces the Widow Douglass'
story about "Moses and the Bulrushers." Huck states, "so then I didn't care no more about him,
because I don't take no stock in dead people" (26). Huck ceaselessly disdains efforts to civilize him,
but the Widow Douglass continues to try to change him. After Huck first learns about Hell from the
Widow Douglass, his earnest initial response is memorable. Huck covertly thinks, "Well, I couldn't
see no advantage in going where she was going, so I

Mark Twain's Assessment Of James Fennimore Cooper
Mark Twain's assessment of James Fennimore Cooper's "literary offenses" is an outrageous attack
on one of the most proven of early 19th century authors. If one is to believe it satire, as has often
been asserted, then why choose Cooper at all? Surely there were more fitting Romantic authors for
Mark Twain to "pick on." If this is, indeed, a real attack against the author, then it is incorrect and
fallacious. Twain condescending and malicious tone discredits his own arguments as he proceeds to
make wild exaggerations, as well as attack the word usage of Cooper. In Twain's very first line and
again near the end, he discredits the arguments he intends to make. In his criticism of Cooper,
however, he also takes a shot at professor's Lounsbury ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His first method was by declaring that his word usage, or lack thereof, showed a "high talent for
inaccurate observation" (Twain). Twain provides an example for this accusation by relating the story
of the shooting match in The Pathfinder. While Twain does find several issues with the scene, it
starts with him mentioning how important it is to know what color the head of the nail was painted.
Twain, in this way, also insults the audience, who he apparently believes are not smart or
imaginative enough to use their own mind's eye. His second attack of word usage on Cooper begins
with "Cooper's word–sense was singularly dull" (Twain), comparing Cooper's language to a flat or
sharp pitched singer. He criticizes words used for the words he, himself, would have chosen, such as
"mortified" for "disappointed," "rebuked" for "subdued," and "distrusted" for "suspicious." Of
course, to distrust someone is not necessarily the same as being suspicious of them, and to be
mortified is a much more intense emotion than disappointed. Who is to say if the words Cooper
chose were not the correct ones? Twain, in his eighteen rules, even stated, "Use the right word, not
its second cousin." And, again, technically, should the "right word" not have been the "correct" one?
Twain himself falls prey to his own criticism in this

The Influence Of Romanticism In The Deerslayer
Prior to the nineteenth century, Americans had no real unique identity and were still widely regarded
as European, however with the rise of the Romantic era, America began to retain an identity based
on the idea strong moral compass, God ordained expansion, and reverence of nature, making the
ideal American a frontiersman. Thomas Jefferson's purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1806 was
a momentous turning point in American history as it is considered by many historians to be the onset
of the Romantic movement. The Louisiana Purchase more than doubled the size of the United
States. This huge expanse of land caused a dramatic shift from the highly–coveted mindset of
rationalism to the ideas of romanticism. As new land, yet to be contaminated by mankind, was
readily available for all Americans, people quickly began to venture west. As they traveled, a new
sense of nature arose among Americans, one where the wilderness was divine, sublime and awe–
inspiring. These ideas that help define the new American man are best presented in the abundant
literature, artwork, and historical events littered throughout the 19th century. James Fennimore
Cooper's The Deerslayer is just one of these many pieces of work. The Deerslayer is a unique
literary work as t it was one of the first fictional books written in the United States. Despite the fact
that it is not a true story, it conveys a great deal of information about American society during the

The Bond of Sisterhood in The Deerslayer
Sisters throughout history have been to eachother: friends, playmates, adversaries, confidantes, soul
mates and "significant others", but the most important bond they share is their sisterly love. This
bond stands out and sets it apart from all others. The sisterly love that Judith and Hetty Hutter
possessed never seemed to reach its full potential. This may be due to the fact that they were sisters
who were different in every way possible. This sisterly conflict creates great diversity and themes
for the book "The DeerSlayer" by James Fenimore Cooper. Due to the fact that their mother died
when they were young, Judith being the older one, naturally took the leadership and mothering ...

Personality and character–wise Hetty and Judith were exact opposites. Judith bore not only good
looks but also intelligence to compliment her physical beauty. Hetty was once described as having
"less intellect than ordinary falls to the share of human beings." It was known amongst the lake that
Hetty infact was slow and retarded, with a simple yet humble mind. Judith did recognize this
weakness and took advantage of it. She had grown up thinking herself not as an equal to Hetty, but
as a better person. This is evident through out the story. At one point Judith and the Deerslayer are
searching for the wealth hidden in the treasure chest. They search high and low throughout the
barge, including through Judith's luxurious possessions when the happen upon Hetty's simple ones.
Judith states in a tone of betterment, "'These are only the clothes of poor Hetty, dear simple girl!' she
said; 'nothing we seek would be likely to be there.'" Judith has become a self–seeking, self–
righteous woman, only seeking out things in life that benefited her. The favoritism of Judith over
Hetty by their father is constantly seen in the story. Hetty had belongings said to be "plain and
simple, and of not much value," while Judith possessed "items of great worth and pride, belonging
only to a woman of such exquisite beauty." Ironically it was Hetty who adored and loved the father
who favored her sister over her. At Tom's death, he confessed that he was not their

Leaves And Survivor Essay
A novel is often defined as "an invented prose narrative that is usually long and complex and deals
especially with human experience through a usually connected sequence of events." ( ) The basis of
a novel is very broad and features many different types of writing styles and genres throughout time.
Novels such as House of Leaves and Survivor are written in a different way than White Noise, but
all still follow the basic framework of a novel. What binds the different types of novels together is
the elements presented within them. They all feature many of the same literary techniques and
literary elements. Even though some novels contain different styles of writing and different stories,
they are all still considered a novel. Fiction narratives written in prose can be seen dating back to
Rome and Greece. How does one differentiate from those written in ancient times and those written
in the eighteenth century? Ian Watt in his book The Rise of the Novel says that realism is the major
thing that separates the two. ( ) He looked to many historians and novelists and says "they have seen
'realism ' as the defining characteristic which differentiates the work of the early eighteenth century
novelists from previous fiction." ( ) With this, he says that the novel officially began in the
eighteenth century. Agreeing with Watt, the English Department at Brooklyn College says

Twain begins the essay by quoting a few critics, who praise the works of Cooper, as Thomas

from right for the Professor of English Literature in Yale, the Professor of English Literature in
Columbia, and Willkie Collins to deliver opinions on Cooper's literature without having read some
of it. It would have been much more decorous to keep silent and let persons talk who have read

The greatest example of hyperbole is seen at the end of the essay. Twain implements his final

Thereupon, Twain says that he put many men from all various religions in a cage and after two days
there was "...but a chaos of gory odds and ends of turbans and fezzes and plaids and bones and flesh
– not a specimen left alive". This instance is as utmost as hyperbole gets. Twain indicates the
savagery of man in an example of an Earl who hunts buffalo for food and a snake that eats a calf for
food. He elucidates that the Earl kills 72 animals when only needing one for food while the
anaconda kills just one calf for food. Furthermore, Twain elucidates that when Humans keep
prisoners, the prisoners are dreadfully tantalized. Twain goes ahead to point numerous horrible
examples of ill–treatment, torture throughout history. Twain also indicates how humans are the only

How Does Lawrence Present The Character Of Hester Prynne
In his essay, "On The Scarlet Letter", D.H. Lawrence expresses his negative opinion on Hester
Prynne. He believes Hester is a "demon" who takes advantage of people like Dimmesdale.
Lawrence is effective in achieving his purpose to denounce Hester Prynne with his use of these
literary devices: literary allusions, repetition, and humorous hyperboles.
D.H Lawrence uses literary allusions to denounce Hester by comparing her to other sinners. First,
Lawrence portrays Hester Prynne as someone who sins by seducing others. He alludes to the book,
The Deerslayer, and states "Deerslayer refused to be seduced by Judith Hutter. At least the Sodom
apple of sin didn't fetch him" (Lawrence n.p.). In this case, Deerslayer is compared to Dimmesdale,
and Judith Hutter is compared to Hester Prynne. Judith Hutter is seen as a very sinful character in
The Deerslayer, so by depicting Hester Prynne as Judith, Lawrence emphasizes how much of a
sinful person Hester is. Lawrence also points out that unlike Dimmesdale, Deerslayer refused to be

Lawrence believes the way Hester Prynne is portrayed as a heroine is unrealistic. He emphasizes
this with his statement "it is, perhaps, the most colossal satire ever penned" (Lawrence n.p.). This

Hester Prynne's life is not meant to be a satire, but by labeling it so, Lawrence mocks her and the
idea of her being a heroine. Lawrence also targets Hester Prynne's actions with this hyperbole, "she
tickled him in the right place and he fell" (Lawrence n.p.). In this quote, Lawrence is exaggerating
Hester's sin with a mocking tone, using the words "she tickled him". He purposely uses this childish
word choice to bring out humour and restate his idea that Hester's story is a colossal

Hester Prynne Scarlet Letter
In On the Scarlet Letter, D. H. Lawrence criticizes Hester Prynne, the protagonist of Nathaniel
Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, for deceiving the public about the nature of her sin of adultery. He
perceives Hester Prynne as a mere seducer who disguises her sin with a pretense of purity. In his
essay, Lawrence effectively demonstrates that Hester Prynne is not a character that deserves our
sympathy through the use of choppy, repetitive syntax, relevant allusions to other literature, and a
biting, sarcastic tone. One method that Lawrence uses to effectively criticize Hester Prynne's actions
is the use of blunt, redundant syntax. Throughout his essay, he condenses his ideas into brief
sentences that directly introduce the point. For instance, Lawrence succinctly summarizes the ...

In the beginning of his essay, Lawrence references The Deerslayer, a novel by James Fenimore
Cooper, in which the "Deerslayer [refuses] to be seduced by Judith Hutter" (Lawrence). Lawrence
alludes to the Deerslayer and Judith Hutter to assert that seduction does not necessarily have to
succeed in wooing men. Therefore, Hester Prynne's act of adultery could have been avoided and
thus should not be excused and forgiven. Furthermore, Lawrence mockingly refers to Hester as
"Mary of the Bleeding Heart" and "another Magdalen" (Lawrence). In both instances, he alludes to
biblical female figures who are perceived as repentant and innocent. However, Lawrence
sarcastically incorporates this analogy, implying that Hester Prynne is the opposite of a pure woman.
By comparing her to women who are known for their abstinence, Lawrence ironically emphasizes
Hester's adultery, which negates her supposed purity. Throughout his essay, Lawrence alludes to
characters who have overcome temptations of sexual desires in order to provide a stark contrast to

James Fenimore Cooper 's Impact On American Literature
James Fenimore Cooper had a very interesting life, molded American literature, and influenced
many popular authors, such as Herman Melville, Richard Henry Dana, Jr., Francis Parkman, and
even Mark Twain, through his "literary offenses."(1) The experiences Cooper had throughout his life
shaped his rogue character and literary style. The evidence of Cooper's impact to American literature
is well documented.
James Fenimore Cooper was born on September 15, 1789 in Burlington, New Jersey to William
Cooper and Elizabeth Fenimore. James was the last of twelve children; only seven survived
childhood: Richard, Hannah, Isaac, Ann, William and Samuel. Within the first year of James' birth,

At the age of 12, William Cooper resolved to send James to a Latin based boarding school run by
Reverend Thomas Ellison. James' closest companion in boarding school was William Jay, the
second son of governor John Jay. They used to adventure around New York, especially in the
excavated plot of land which Saint Peter's Church would be built on, with other boys who would
later become business for the state. This foreshadowed James' trickster attitude. By the age of
thirteen, James entered Yale College.
Some evidence to the claims of James' rogue character surface during his time at Yale. Simply
stated: Cooper was a prankster. It is reported that he put a donkey in a teacher's classroom, and
many other tricks. James never got into large trouble until his biggest prank: he blew up another
student's dorm door with gunpowder. By the age of 16, James Fenimore Cooper was expelled from
Yale College.
Shortly after James left Yale, he enrolled in the Navy. There is little to no information about this
time of his life other than it being a basis for his first book: Afloat and Ashore: A Sea Tale. On
December 22, 1809, his father, William Cooper died from a blow to the back of the head delivered
by a political opponent; this was a devastating episode as James was at sea when his father passed.
Shortly after, James met Susan DeLancey, whom he married on on January 1, 1811. The DeLanceys

Analysis Of 'The Leather Stocking Tales'
"Every trace of their footsteps was lost in the obscurity of the woods," wrote James Fenimore
Cooper as he described the characters in his "The Leather Stocking Tales" as they were concealed by
the woods. Cooper's words have different levels of complexity throughout his novel series, which
create a comparison between the colonial frontier and its inhabitants. The protagonist of these tales
and the movie based on them is called Hawkeye, a white man raised by the last member of the
Mohican tribe, Chingachgook. Hawkeye is known for his gun aim, and throughout the tales, earns
the love of Cora, the daughter of British officer Colonel Munro. Taking place during the 1750's on

Another significant piece of "The Leather Stocking Tales" is the blending cultures displayed that
illustrate the frontier. In the movie, "The Last of the Mohicans", one of the beginning scenes shows
a cabin, and similarly to the one discussed earlier, represents peace and the blending of society.
Although it symbolizes the same ideas, the course in which it does so is contrasting. In this scene,
the cabin is full of life. Women, children, Mohican natives, and white men are all around a table in
the small building. Within the cabin, the different groups of people speak their own languages, yet
are able to get along well together regardless. This is crucial to showing the colonial frontier as
compounding, proving that different societal groups can mix. Furthermore, as the cabin is
surrounded by nature, it proves that nature can be used as a resource to society and that both nature
and society can coexist. This is only true for as long as neither one is destructive toward the other,
and since such simplicity and harmony is impossible, one must eventually dismantle the other.
Similarly to how the scenery symbolizes the colonial frontier, the characterization plays a similar
role. The protagonist in the series, Hawkeye, represents the frontier both as society and nature.
Throughout the series, his name changes. Originally

The Last of the Mohicans: A Tale of Romance and Racism Falling in love has been a common
theme of literature since people first started writing. The romantic era of literature was from the late
1700's to the mid 1800's. James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans was written at the
peak of this era in 1826. Many have critiqued Cooper's writing style, but few have critiqued his
content due to it being so controversial. Cooper uses the romance between the characters, Cora and
Uncas, to cover racial stereotypes and inequalities throughout The Last of the Mohicans.
The Last of the Mohicans was written by James Fenimore Cooper in 1826, during the romanticism
era of literature. The book is set in 1757, therefore taking place during a time of colonialism.
According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, "Colonialism is a practice of domination,
which involves the subjugation of one people to another"(Kohn and Reddy 1) In Cooper's novel,
colonialism is present by the Native Americans being colonized by European Americans.
Throughout the book, Cooper constantly compares European Americans and Native Americans,
different tactics and behaviors. ("The Last" 2)."As was common in the 19th century, The Last of the
Mohicans was published in two volumes" (Scalia 1). This book was the second book of Cooper's
Leatherstocking Tales and was the most widely read of any of the novels of James Fenimore Cooper

Essay on A poem and a loaded gun
A Poem and a Loaded Gun
The post civil war era was wrought with sexism and backwards thinking. Emily Dickinson was born
in 1830, wrote 1800 poems in her lifetime. She has become known for unfolding the social
boundaries surrounding women in this time period. Most of her life was shrouded in seclusion and
mystery. In the realm of poetry, authors are creative with their usage of literary techniques in order
to illustrate their point of view to the reader. Emily Dickinson is especially known for her precise
diction, powerful imagery, and obscure timing or rhythm. In her poem "My life had stood – A

The faster pace and constant beats provide for a significant change from the broken up stand still
qualities of the first stanza. The mood portrayed here is that of eventfulness, even usefulness, it is
apparent that the speaker feels more fulfilled or somehow more whole.
Also in the second stanza the author introduces the theme of unity between speaker and master by
use of her diction. Albert Gelpi, anther notable critic of Dickinson's work, points out that "already by
the second stanza "I" and "he" have become "we"...the rhythm and repetition underscoring the
momentous change of identity." By doing this the author introduces the theme of possession vs.
possessed and the inherent contradiction of the concept, referencing the fact that one cannot be
without the other.
The second notable use of interesting diction can be found in the speaker's description of her smile.
She "compares her smile to the aftermath of a volcanic eruption." This notable according to
Christine Miller, a notable commentator of Dickinson's work, because she does not compare it to an
event but to "a completed action." She says the "past perfect verb is more chilling than the present
tense would be." Miller notes this same technique later in the poem when the speaker describes

Analysis Of The Deerslayer, By James Fenimore Cooper
James Fenimore Cooper was a widely renowned American author in the 1800s. However, due to his
fame and praise, he was criticised and despised by other authors, particularly Mark Twain. In Mark
Twain's satirical critique, "Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offences", Twain mocks Cooper's novels by
saying they are guilty of several literary offenses. Twain ridicules Cooper and says that his works of
literature are considered art. In "Chapter 1" of Cooper's novel, The Deerslayer, Cooper violates three
rules of literature: developing characters, having a reason for characters, and having only necessary
parts of the tale. Mark Twain states that scenes of a story must be necessary for the story and its
development. However, Cooper fails to accomplish this in The Deerslayer. Since the novel starts
abruptly, without any direction, there is no plot to develop. In the beginning, the forester says "Here
is room to breathe in!" ... "Hurrah! Deerslayer; here is daylight, at last, and yonder is the lake.".

example, "The stature of Hurry Harry exceeded six feet four, and being unusually well proportioned,
his strength fully realized the idea created by his gigantic frame." describes the physical body looks

Natty Bumppo is a hero in many eyes in this story, and as most heroes he has one very important

The Last Of The Mohicans Character Analysis
"The Last of the Mohicans" is a novel series by James Fenimore Cooper. This novel series takes
place in Colonial America, Frontier in the 1750's. Throughout "The Last of the Mohicans" the main
character is Hawkeye. Hawkeye has many problems during the story but the big conflict is his
struggle to conform to society's expectations. Through Cooper's eyes, it is possible for Hawkeye to
be a savage and a gentleman, a killer and a peacemaker, a loner and a lover. The frontier gives
Hawkeye an opportunity to have many possibilities throughout the story to live a life of opposites.
His personality is made up of many of those opposite. One of those opposite personalities is him
being a savage and a gentleman. One of these examples that are shown of him being a savage is him
fighting throughout the whole story and taking out his enemies. Especially during the Huron and
British fight when Hawkeye takes people out to make his way to Quora. When he does this he
makes everything look so easy as if he was trained for it. In addition to Hawkeyes opposite
personality, is him not only being a savage but also a gentleman. This gentleman personality is also
shown a lot throughout the story. For example, once he makes his way over to Quora during the
Huron British fight. Hawkeye starts to comfort Quora and make her feel safe bringing out his
gentleman skills. As well as being a gentleman to Quora's sister and keeping both of them safe while
they travel throughout their experiences. Hawkeye uses his gentleman and savage personalities a lot
throughout the novel series because of the opportunity he has to use them. Not only does the frontier
give him opportunities to use his savage and gentleman skills but it also gives him an opportunity to
show his killer and peacemaker skills. These killer peacemaker traits are viewed in the movie and in
the text. In the text, Hawkeye is fighting with an Indian. The narrator says, "Deerslayer, after tossing
the tomahawk into the canoe, advanced to his victim, and stood over him, leaning on his rifle, in
melancholy attention.". This quote shows that Hawkeye is on top of things and knows what to do
when he has to battle someone for something. Later Hawkeye ends up killing his

Nature In Mrs. Manstey's View
NATURE IN MRS. MANSTEY'S VIEW "Mrs. Manstey's View," a short story about the end of an
old woman's life, has a strong theme of the importance of nature. The titular woman has very little
left in her life besides a small home with an extraordinary view of gardens and flowers. Indeed,
early in the story, she states, "Mrs. Manstey's real friends were the denizens of the yard, the
hyacinths, the magnolia, the green parrot..." This dedication to her view causes a huge upheaval
when a neighbor plans to expand her house, cutting off the view mentioned in the title. However,
nature serves as more than just a source of conflict in this story. Nature, perhaps, is its own character
in "Mrs. Manstey's View." In addition to being personified frequently as a friend of the woman,
nature also provides comfort to her while ill and pushes this quiet, elderly woman into violence just
to preserve itself. Nature also represents her desires. In her youth, Mrs. Manstey wanted to live in

Individualism: Transcendentalism And Ralph Waldo Emerson
Romanticism was a rising art theme in the 1700s to the mid–1800s; this was especially prominent in
painting than in sculpture or architecture. Romanticism seemed to have a less rational, more
intuitive, and more in touch with the senses way of thinking. However, transcendentalists believed
that one could "transcend", or go beyond, what an individual can see, hear, taste, touch, or feel.
Individualism was also an important topic; the philosophy focused on the individual and its
importance rather than a whole group's significance. Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau,
Herman Melville, Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow are
some noteworthy transcendentalists.

comprehend his argument. Not all readers can immediately understand Lawrence's criticism of
Hester because he uses many unfamiliar arguments. However, by tying in references to books,
mythology, and religion, Lawrence makes his meaning more clear, as readers may be familiar with
the cultural aspects he refers to. The connections the readers make allow Lawrence to better
persuade them that Hester is unworthy of the praise she receives. First, he refers to James Fenimore
Cooper's The Deerslayer, a book about a frontiersman whom Lawrence compares Hester's lover,
Dimmesdale, to. He writes, "Deerslayer refused to be seduced by Judith Hutter. At least the Sodom
apple of sin didn't fetch him." Although Lawrence's main criticism is of Hester Prynne, he also
expresses disapproval of Dimmesdale. Lawrence effectively uses Deerslayer to prove that
Dimmesdale actively chooses to be seduced by Hester. He establishes a stark contrast between
Dimmesdale and Deerslayer, showing that Dimmesdale could have turned down Hester but chose
not to. By doing so, Lawrence also emphasizes the sin Hester committed in seducing Dimmesdale.
Later, Lawrence references a more commonly known character, the Greek mythological hero
Hercules. He claims that when Hester seduced Dimmesdale, Dimmesdale's response was along the
lines of "seduce me, Mrs. Hercules." While Hercules is remembered for his immense

Summary Of The Film 'The Leatherstocking Tales'
"The Leatherstocking Tales" a novel series written by James Fennimore Cooper centers around the
struggles of Hawkeye, a colonial American who was adopted by Mohican Indians. Trapped between
two cultures, Hawkeye struggles to find a balance between his inherent ethical code and society's
expectations. The American Frontier provides the perfect setting to show nature as a refuge.
Nature being a refuge can be interpreted in many different ways. One of the interpretations is seeing
where civilization and the frontier meet. In the film, "The Last of the Mohicans", the Cameron
family lives in between two worlds, the world of civilization and the frontier that the Indians call
home. This family lives in harmony of both worlds, having the pleasures of civilization as well as
the struggles of the frontier. For example, the Cameron family is able to have a log cabin to live in
and plates; a pleasure of the civilized world. On the other hand, the Cameron family –living on the
frontier– struggles with the outside dangers such as attacks from enemy Indians in war parties.
While the Cameron family lives in both of these words, more often than not does nature reclaim
what civilization once had.
Nature always has a way to reclaim what it has lost, civilized places that have been long forgotten.
According to "The Leatherstocking Tales" nature and civilization have met during a war. "This rude
and neglected building was one of those deserted works, which, having been thrown up on an

Allusions In Scarlet Letter

  • 1. Allusions In Scarlet Letter In On the Scarlet Letter D.H. Lawrence criticizes Nathaniel Hawthorne's portrayal of Hester Prynne in the novel The Scarlet Letter. He describes the actions of Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale to illustrate and criticize the sinfulness present in the story. D.H. Lawrence uses literary allusions, a sarcastic tone, and an informal and direct syntax to achieve his purpose of arguing that Hester Prynne is a sinner with malicious qualities who does not deserve the praise Hawthorne gives her. Lawrence incorporates certain literary allusions in his criticism to draw parallels that emphasize his claim that Hester Prynne is an over–respected and malicious being. When Lawrence writes, "Deerslayer reduced to be seduced by Judith Hutter," he is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By including sarcastic and extreme language in his criticism, Lawrence is challenging the seriousness of the story and its characters. Lawrence includes the phrase, "Because the greatest thrill in life is to bring down the Sacred Saint with a flop into the mud." Of course, he is not being serious when he speaks about the "greatest thrill in life", but through the use of this exaggeration of language, Lawrence is able to emphasize his claim. By critiquing her as not serious and sinful through the use of sarcasm, Lawrence conveys the point that Hester is a tricky woman. Lawrence is saying that Hawthorne is wrong in portraying Hester as a victim as she enjoys bringing people down. Also, when Lawrence writes, "Whatever you do, don't let her start tickling you. She knows your weakspot," he is using ridiculous language to show the reader that Hester Prynne's actions are, in fact, ridiculous. He is criticizing Hester Prynne by turning her into a jocular character, when that was not Nathaniel Hawthorne's intention. Lawrence's use of sarcasm forces the reader to view Hester Prynne in a new light and really question whether she deserves Hawthorne's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Literary Offences Of Fenimore Cooper The definition of art has been debated time and time again, but there is still not a concrete line drawn between what is defined as art and what is not. However, there are certain works of art that set the example for what other works of art should contain. Specifically, according to Ernest Hemingway, an American author from the early twentieth century, "all modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since". In other words, Hemingway stated that Mark Twain had laid the foundation for modern American writers who strive to create works of art through literature. Twain directly refers to how a work of literature should constitute art in his essay "The Literary Offenses of Fenimore Cooper" where he criticizes Deerslayer for not reaching the requirements of literary art that Twain describes. He stresses the idea that everything in the literary work should "accomplish something and arrive somewhere", have correct and definite personage that makes sense, care about the characters in the story, and have proper diction. In Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, he successfully applies the appropriate aesthetic and literary values that he holds literature to in his essay on the violation of literary art in Fenimore Cooper's Deerslayer through his purposeful portrayal of Huckleberry Finn and his endeavors. He stayed in the navy for three years. When his father died in 1809, Cooper inherited $50, 000. He married in 1811 to Susan Augusta De Lancey, after quitting the navy. One evening, when his wife was unwell, he complained to her that contemporary books were unsatisfactory. In reply, his wife set down a wager that he could write a better book. He took up the wager immediately, and as a result, he wrote the book Precaution. Precaution was heavily influenced by the style of Jane Austen. This began his writing career. Outside the fort, he had to rely on the "uncivilized" wisdom of the younger men like Uncas. Munro is at a disadvantage, in the "outlands of America." Hawkeye is almost completely void of boundaries. He is an Indian's white man. He knows most Indian dialects, most of the Indian leaders, and a great deal about their culture. Hawkeye is virtually an Indian. He does not hesitate to stretch his boundaries, especially in defense of his friends, even attempting to be the scapegoat for Cora when Magua is given permission by Tamenund, the old leader of the Delaware Indians, to take her captive. Munro has clear boundaries; Hawkeye does not. Munro is a powerful man inside his boundaries, but Hawkeye is an influential man wherever he goes. While Munro is clearly respected by all his men, Hawkeye's plans and comments are valued by all that know him. The boundaries of Munro are clear. Hawkeye's are not. Munro's changes and boundaries heavily reflect American Romanticism. His choices and feelings become his downfall. Essay on The American Hero The American Hero Every child has fantasy's of being a super hero and leaping tall buildings in a single bound or staring death in the face everyday and somehow finding a way to escape. All of these imaginative thoughts have been derived from the past literary works by the great writers of the early American literary period. These early writers entered society into a world of action and adventure, where one can see spectacular events unfolding through the eyes of a notorious man of courage and feel as though they are defending there country or saving the woman they love. The Deerslayer 5–7 AP Junior English 1/10/13 The Deerslayer "The Deerslayer," the first novel in the "Leatherstocking Tales" chronologically, yet it was the last one written by James Fenimore Cooper. "The Deerslayer", also known as "The First War–Path", is a masterpiece of suspense, adventure, and romance crafted by James Cooper in his later years. The tales of Natty Bumppo, more commonly known as Deerslayer or Leatherstocking, considered by many to be some of the earliest true American novels. Occurring during the early 1740 is as the wars between the French and Indians kindled, the story of Natty Bumppo begins. Nevertheless, once one reaches it the wait is rewarded .Cooper's writing style does take a time to get used to it so in the beginning one may find themselves reading chapters to see what may have been missed or to see if what was read was miss interpreted. As the reader reads, it becomes easier to understand Cooper's use of words and style throughout the tale. • 13. Hyperbole Scarlet Letter D.H. Lawrence writes about Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter in his essay "On The Scarlet Letter". Instead of writing a traditional essay on the novel, Laurence creates a unique criticism of the novel through a sense of rhythm. He uses several literary devices to reach this goal of creating an effective criticism. More specifically, D.H. Lawrence uses the literary devices of hyperbole, syntax, and allusion to craft an effective criticism of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter. The author creates an effective criticism of Hawthorne's work through his use of hyperbole throughout his essay. For example, Laurence criticizes how Hester Prynne is "put upon [a] scaffold and worship[ed]" (Lawrence). Through this extreme statement, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An example of this is when he references James Fenimore Cooper's work Deerslayer when he discusses how "Deerslayer refused to be seduced by Judith Hutter" (Lawrence). By alluding to Cooper's work, Lawrence references how the character Deerslayer resists Judith Hutter's seduction. Through this, he makes the criticism of another path that Hawthorne could have taken. Instead of simply giving in to Hester's seduction, the author makes the point that Dimmesdale could have resisted Hester's attempts of seduction. This would have driven the story and would have created a more realistic situation for the reverend. Another allusion the author makes is when he says "Abel! Abel! Abel! Admirable!" (Lawrence). Through this biblical reference, he criticizes Hester is portrayed to be an innocent victim by comparing her to Abel, the son of Adam and Eve and the murder victim of his brother Cain. Consequently, Laurence criticizes that Hester is too much of a victim and that this trait dehumanizes her character and creates a sort of innocent and moral ideal. This builds upon Lawrence's claim that Hawthorne created Hester with the flaw of being too morally justified and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. literature in America Essay When I think of America, I think of freedom. We live in a country where we can do what we choose. We can express our opinions and live our own lives. Individuals can form their own individual beliefs and they can do what they want and pursue what they wish. They can play basketball, go to school, get a job, have a family, buy a house, or go to church. We are free. We have opportunity to be whatever we want to make ourselves. When you ask, what is an American? I find it no different to ask, what is freedom? America and freedom are intertwined and this relationship is evident in American literature. The notion of freedom and everything relating to freedom unites all of the American literature we have read. In Twain's Huckleberry Finn, Huck ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Self Reliance, Emerson explains that our freedom to choose and our ability to think what we want to think define what America is. I believe it is characteristic of Americans to strive for what they think is right. In Poe's the House of Usher, Usher decided to bury his sister alive. I think this story can relate to us today. Many people would say that America is known for persevering through rough times. I'd say the last few years have been a rough time for America, from 9/11 to now––the war in Iraq. Sometimes situations may seem unbeatable, like being trapped in a coffin, but if you fight hard enough, like we are against the terrorists and in Iraq, you can overcome anything. American's can overcome anything. Usher's sister was buried alive and finally broke from the coffin after a week of struggle. Also, many of the authors we have studied describe nature in riveting detail. To them and to me, our beautiful nature represents something more then just what you see with your eye–it represents America's freedom. In Emerson's Nature, Thorpe's The Big Bear of Arkansas, Twain's Huckleberry Finn, Bryant's Thanatopsis, and Edwards' Shadows of Divine Things, we see an apparent love and lust of nature by the authors. The great aspects of nature represent the great aspects of America–freedom. The mountains and trees scatter in nature in pure harmony just like the American people live freely in America. • 17. Critical Analysis : Hester Prynne In the critical essay On the Scarlet Letter , D.H. Lawrence depicts Hester Prynne as a seductive but demonic woman who craves the downfall of holy men. Prynne has been a subject of debate since the publication of The Scarlet Letter . While some believe she is a tragic heroine, others suggest that she is a personification of all things unholy. Hawthorne takes the stance that Hester is a strong and independent heroine, but D.H. Lawrence argues otherwise. Lawrence persuades his audience that Hester is nothing more than an adulteress with mocking syntax, sarcastic diction, and derogatory allusions. D.H. Lawrence's mocking syntax is like a taunt aimed at Prynne and at Hawthorne. In the essay, Lawrence makes multiple references to the scarlet letter, "A. Adulteress! Stitched with gold thread, glittering upon the bosom." Here, he is making a mockery of the scarlet letter and all that it stands for. The arrangement and rhythm of the words make for a notable sing–song lilt, the same rhythm that is typical of a challenge. The syntax is also choppy, as demonstrated with the constant repetition of words. Lawrence speaks in short fragments, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mark Twain's Personality Revealed in His Writing Essay Mark Twain's Personality Revealed in His Writing Literary artists refuse to be categorized, defined, and completely fathomed by any standardized paradigm, but a writer's work exhibits his or her personality traits. Mark Twain's literature manifests his personality's candor, graphicness, humor, and criticalness that William Dean Howells describes in "My Mark Twain." After romantically heralding the position of a steamboatman in Old Times on the Mississippi, a young Mark Twain realizes and expresses his new belief on the unfairness of life because of his recent knowledge about the rise of an ungodly boy to the position of a steamboatman. Twain writes, "This thing shook the bottom out of all my Sunday– school teachings" (275). Instead of glossing over his young self's questioning nature, Twain acknowledges the ability to question the authority of the church, even if it is based on jealousy. Similar in honesty and naivete to the young Twain is the forthright Huckleberry Finn. He will not accept society's conventions about both religion and history, and he denounces the Widow Douglass' story about "Moses and the Bulrushers." Huck states, "so then I didn't care no more about him, because I don't take no stock in dead people" (26). Huck ceaselessly disdains efforts to civilize him, but the Widow Douglass continues to try to change him. After Huck first learns about Hell from the Widow Douglass, his earnest initial response is memorable. Huck covertly thinks, "Well, I couldn't see no advantage in going where she was going, so I ... • 21. Mark Twain's Assessment Of James Fennimore Cooper Mark Twain's assessment of James Fennimore Cooper's "literary offenses" is an outrageous attack on one of the most proven of early 19th century authors. If one is to believe it satire, as has often been asserted, then why choose Cooper at all? Surely there were more fitting Romantic authors for Mark Twain to "pick on." If this is, indeed, a real attack against the author, then it is incorrect and fallacious. Twain condescending and malicious tone discredits his own arguments as he proceeds to make wild exaggerations, as well as attack the word usage of Cooper. In Twain's very first line and again near the end, he discredits the arguments he intends to make. In his criticism of Cooper, however, he also takes a shot at professor's Lounsbury ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His first method was by declaring that his word usage, or lack thereof, showed a "high talent for inaccurate observation" (Twain). Twain provides an example for this accusation by relating the story of the shooting match in The Pathfinder. While Twain does find several issues with the scene, it starts with him mentioning how important it is to know what color the head of the nail was painted. Twain, in this way, also insults the audience, who he apparently believes are not smart or imaginative enough to use their own mind's eye. His second attack of word usage on Cooper begins with "Cooper's word–sense was singularly dull" (Twain), comparing Cooper's language to a flat or sharp pitched singer. He criticizes words used for the words he, himself, would have chosen, such as "mortified" for "disappointed," "rebuked" for "subdued," and "distrusted" for "suspicious." Of course, to distrust someone is not necessarily the same as being suspicious of them, and to be mortified is a much more intense emotion than disappointed. Who is to say if the words Cooper chose were not the correct ones? Twain, in his eighteen rules, even stated, "Use the right word, not its second cousin." And, again, technically, should the "right word" not have been the "correct" one? Twain himself falls prey to his own criticism in this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Influence Of Romanticism In The Deerslayer Prior to the nineteenth century, Americans had no real unique identity and were still widely regarded as European, however with the rise of the Romantic era, America began to retain an identity based on the idea strong moral compass, God ordained expansion, and reverence of nature, making the ideal American a frontiersman. Thomas Jefferson's purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1806 was a momentous turning point in American history as it is considered by many historians to be the onset of the Romantic movement. The Louisiana Purchase more than doubled the size of the United States. This huge expanse of land caused a dramatic shift from the highly–coveted mindset of rationalism to the ideas of romanticism. As new land, yet to be contaminated by mankind, was readily available for all Americans, people quickly began to venture west. As they traveled, a new sense of nature arose among Americans, one where the wilderness was divine, sublime and awe– inspiring. These ideas that help define the new American man are best presented in the abundant literature, artwork, and historical events littered throughout the 19th century. James Fennimore Cooper's The Deerslayer is just one of these many pieces of work. The Deerslayer is a unique literary work as t it was one of the first fictional books written in the United States. Despite the fact that it is not a true story, it conveys a great deal of information about American society during the time period. The main character of Cooper's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Scott Fitzgerald's life and work were in a knot from the start; his profession spanned one of the most tumultuous eras of the century, and from the very start he was the creator and the victim of the new culture of celebrity which accompanied the rise of modern technology. The Bond of Sisterhood in The Deerslayer Essays The Bond of Sisterhood in The Deerslayer Sisters throughout history have been to eachother: friends, playmates, adversaries, confidantes, soul mates and "significant others", but the most important bond they share is their sisterly love. This bond stands out and sets it apart from all others. The sisterly love that Judith and Hetty Hutter possessed never seemed to reach its full potential. This may be due to the fact that they were sisters who were different in every way possible. This sisterly conflict creates great diversity and themes for the book "The DeerSlayer" by James Fenimore Cooper. She had grown up thinking herself not as an equal to Hetty, but as a better person. This is evident through out the story. At one point Judith and the Deerslayer are searching for the wealth hidden in the treasure chest. • 29. Leaves And Survivor Essay A novel is often defined as "an invented prose narrative that is usually long and complex and deals especially with human experience through a usually connected sequence of events." ( ) The basis of a novel is very broad and features many different types of writing styles and genres throughout time. Novels such as House of Leaves and Survivor are written in a different way than White Noise, but all still follow the basic framework of a novel. What binds the different types of novels together is the elements presented within them. They all feature many of the same literary techniques and literary elements. Even though some novels contain different styles of writing and different stories, they are all still considered a novel. Fiction narratives written in prose can be seen dating back to Rome and Greece. How does one differentiate from those written in ancient times and those written in the eighteenth century? Ian Watt in his book The Rise of the Novel says that realism is the major thing that separates the two. ( ) He looked to many historians and novelists and says "they have seen 'realism ' as the defining characteristic which differentiates the work of the early eighteenth century novelists from previous fiction." ( ) With this, he says that the novel officially began in the eighteenth century. It would have been much more decorous to keep silent and let persons talk who have read Cooper". • 33. How Does Lawrence Present The Character Of Hester Prynne In his essay, "On The Scarlet Letter", D.H. Lawrence expresses his negative opinion on Hester Prynne. He believes Hester is a "demon" who takes advantage of people like Dimmesdale. Lawrence is effective in achieving his purpose to denounce Hester Prynne with his use of these literary devices: literary allusions, repetition, and humorous hyperboles. D.H Lawrence uses literary allusions to denounce Hester by comparing her to other sinners. First, Lawrence portrays Hester Prynne as someone who sins by seducing others. He alludes to the book, The Deerslayer, and states "Deerslayer refused to be seduced by Judith Hutter. At least the Sodom apple of sin didn't fetch him" (Lawrence n.p.). In this case, Deerslayer is compared to Dimmesdale, and Judith Hutter is compared to Hester Prynne. Lawrence criticizes Hester Prynne, the protagonist of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, for deceiving the public about the nature of her sin of adultery. He perceives Hester Prynne as a mere seducer who disguises her sin with a pretense of purity. In his essay, Lawrence effectively demonstrates that Hester Prynne is not a character that deserves our sympathy through the use of choppy, repetitive syntax, relevant allusions to other literature, and a biting, sarcastic tone. Furthermore, Lawrence mockingly refers to Hester as "Mary of the Bleeding Heart" and "another Magdalen" (Lawrence). In both instances, he alludes to biblical female figures who are perceived as repentant and innocent. However, Lawrence sarcastically incorporates this analogy, implying that Hester Prynne is the opposite of a pure woman. This foreshadowed James' trickster attitude. By the age of thirteen, James entered Yale College. Some evidence to the claims of James' rogue character surface during his time at Yale. Another significant piece of "The Leather Stocking Tales" is the blending cultures displayed that illustrate the frontier. In the movie, "The Last of the Mohicans", one of the beginning scenes shows a cabin, and similarly to the one discussed earlier, represents peace and the blending of society. Although it symbolizes the same ideas, the course in which it does so is contrasting. In this scene, the cabin is full of life. Women, children, Mohican natives, and white men are all around a table in the small building. Within the cabin, the different groups of people speak their own languages, yet are able to get along well together regardless. This is crucial to showing the colonial frontier as compounding, proving that different societal groups can mix. Furthermore, as the cabin is surrounded by nature, it proves that nature can be used as a resource to society and that both nature and society can coexist. This is only true for as long as neither one is destructive toward the other, and since such simplicity and harmony is impossible, one must eventually dismantle the other. Similarly to how the scenery symbolizes the colonial frontier, the characterization plays a similar role. The protagonist in the series, Hawkeye, represents the frontier both as society and nature. However, due to his fame and praise, he was criticised and despised by other authors, particularly Mark Twain. Mark Twain states that scenes of a story must be necessary for the story and its development. However, Cooper fails to accomplish this in The Deerslayer. Throughout "The Last of the Mohicans" the main character is Hawkeye. Hawkeye has many problems during the story but the big conflict is his struggle to conform to society's expectations. Through Cooper's eyes, it is possible for Hawkeye to be a savage and a gentleman, a killer and a peacemaker, a loner and a lover. The frontier gives Hawkeye an opportunity to have many possibilities throughout the story to live a life of opposites. His personality is made up of many of those opposite. One of those opposite personalities is him being a savage and a gentleman. One of these examples that are shown of him being a savage is him fighting throughout the whole story and taking out his enemies. Especially during the Huron and British fight when Hawkeye takes people out to make his way to Quora. When he does this he makes everything look so easy as if he was trained for it. In addition to Hawkeyes opposite personality, is him not only being a savage but also a gentleman. This gentleman personality is also shown a lot throughout the story. As well as being a gentleman to Quora's sister and keeping both of them safe while they travel throughout their experiences. Hawkeye uses his gentleman and savage personalities a lot throughout the novel series because of the opportunity he has to use them. Not only does the frontier give him opportunities to use his savage and gentleman skills but it also gives him an opportunity to show his killer and peacemaker skills. These killer peacemaker traits are viewed in the movie and in the text. In the text, Hawkeye is fighting with an Indian. The narrator says, "Deerslayer, after tossing the tomahawk into the canoe, advanced to his victim, and stood over him, leaning on his rifle, in melancholy attention.". • 56. Nature In Mrs. Manstey's View NATURE IN MRS. MANSTEY'S VIEW "Mrs. Manstey's View," a short story about the end of an old woman's life, has a strong theme of the importance of nature. The titular woman has very little left in her life besides a small home with an extraordinary view of gardens and flowers. Indeed, early in the story, she states, "Mrs. Manstey's real friends were the denizens of the yard, the hyacinths, the magnolia, the green parrot..." This dedication to her view causes a huge upheaval when a neighbor plans to expand her house, cutting off the view mentioned in the title. However, nature serves as more than just a source of conflict in this story. Nature, perhaps, is its own character in "Mrs. Manstey's View." In addition to being personified frequently as a friend of the woman, nature also provides comfort to her while ill and pushes this quiet, elderly woman into violence just to preserve itself. Nature also represents her desires. In her youth, Mrs. Manstey wanted to live in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reader knows very little about her, and indeed, her main purpose is to push the main character Judson towards a memory later referenced by the dying father. While this outcome may have been reached without Judson, it's the girl that truly creates the impact of the message. Finally, towards the end, Judson and his father both recall a memory the song "There's a Song in the Air", and the father declaring that, "The air's not full of music! It's full of bombs crashing and people screaming!" before the mother states that the song is louder. In this case, the song is not music itself; it represents God's love, faith, and hope. The repetition of this analogy makes a strong case in the reader's mind, and effectively ties everything together into something beautiful By using music as an analogy for something so beautiful, Paterson subtly pushes a message of love into a story that could very easily be desolate and ... • 58. Individualism: Transcendentalism And Ralph Waldo Emerson Romanticism was a rising art theme in the 1700s to the mid–1800s; this was especially prominent in painting than in sculpture or architecture. Romanticism seemed to have a less rational, more intuitive, and more in touch with the senses way of thinking. However, transcendentalists believed that one could "transcend", or go beyond, what an individual can see, hear, taste, touch, or feel. Individualism was also an important topic; the philosophy focused on the individual and its importance rather than a whole group's significance. Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Herman Melville, Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow are some noteworthy transcendentalists. Lawrence uses many insightful allusions, allowing readers to make connections and better comprehend his argument. Not all readers can immediately understand Lawrence's criticism of Hester because he uses many unfamiliar arguments. However, by tying in references to books, mythology, and religion, Lawrence makes his meaning more clear, as readers may be familiar with the cultural aspects he refers to. The connections the readers make allow Lawrence to better persuade them that Hester is unworthy of the praise she receives. First, he refers to James Fenimore Cooper's The Deerslayer, a book about a frontiersman whom Lawrence compares Hester's lover, Dimmesdale, to. He writes, "Deerslayer refused to be seduced by Judith Hutter. At least the Sodom apple of sin didn't fetch him." Although Lawrence's main criticism is of Hester Prynne, he also expresses disapproval of Dimmesdale. Lawrence effectively uses Deerslayer to prove that Dimmesdale actively chooses to be seduced by Hester. He establishes a stark contrast between Dimmesdale and Deerslayer, showing that Dimmesdale could have turned down Hester but chose not to. By doing so, Lawrence also emphasizes the sin Hester committed in seducing Dimmesdale. Later, Lawrence references a more commonly known character, the Greek mythological hero Hercules. He claims that when Hester seduced Dimmesdale, Dimmesdale's response was along the lines of "seduce me, Mrs. Hercules." While Hercules is remembered for his immense ... • 64. Summary Of The Film 'The Leatherstocking Tales' "The Leatherstocking Tales" a novel series written by James Fennimore Cooper centers around the struggles of Hawkeye, a colonial American who was adopted by Mohican Indians. Trapped between two cultures, Hawkeye struggles to find a balance between his inherent ethical code and society's expectations. The American Frontier provides the perfect setting to show nature as a refuge. Nature being a refuge can be interpreted in many different ways. One of the interpretations is seeing where civilization and the frontier meet. In the film, "The Last of the Mohicans", the Cameron family lives in between two worlds, the world of civilization and the frontier that the Indians call home. This family lives in harmony of both worlds, having the pleasures of civilization as well as the struggles of the frontier. For example, the Cameron family is able to have a log cabin to live in and plates; a pleasure of the civilized world. On the other hand, the Cameron family –living on the frontier– struggles with the outside dangers such as attacks from enemy Indians in war parties. While the Cameron family lives in both of these words, more often than not does nature reclaim what civilization once had. Nature always has a way to reclaim what it has lost, civilized places that have been long forgotten. According to "The Leatherstocking Tales" nature and civilization have met during a war. "This rude and neglected building was one of those deserted works, which, having been thrown up on an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
