The CHW AIM (Community Health Worker Assessment and Improvement Matrix) is a tool that assesses CHW program functionality, aids in improving performance, and provides action planning recommendations. It was tested in Zambia through a participatory workshop involving 5 organizations. Two organizations showed overall improvement in functionality after implementing interventions identified. A positive correlation was found between functionality and CHW performance, but a weak correlation with engagement factors like opportunities for advancement. The cost per participant was $16.91-$56 and cost per client served was $0.41-$3.11, showing potential for cost-effectiveness. Recommendations focus on investment, technical assistance, expectations, prioritization, facilitation, leadership support, and country ownership

Mobile Technology for Community Health aims to use mobile phones to improve antenatal and postnatal care in Ghana. It has two main applications: 1) MOTECH Mobile Midwife which sends weekly pregnancy information via SMS in local languages and reminds clients of appointments; 2) a nurses' data management tool which allows efficient patient data collection and generation of reports. Initial pilots showed high demand and positive feedback from clients and nurses who reported improved health seeking behavior and care. However, scaling presents challenges in developing sustainable business models and deeper partnerships.

It is important in the drug development process that marketers and researchers collaborate early to ensure that products being developed are truly innovative and deliver brand value to the different end users in a way that the product and the subsequent brand messaging is relevant, compelling and differentiating compared to the competition. In the market place that is heavily cost constraint, innovation is no longer about a unique mode of action or a new formulation, but more about the incremental brand value offered by new pharmaceutical products over existing treatments (standard of care) and how much healthcare systems are prepared to pay for these incremental benefits. My lecture at the Department of Innovation, Lund University, Sweden explored the importance of R&D functions getter closer to external stakeholders to really understand their needs, how they define brand value and the importance of considering this early in the drug development process.

Patient Centered Medical Home
Edwina Rogers, executive director of Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative, began her presentation by highlighting the movement to advance medical homes.
With the U.S. being the number one in the world for the cost of healthcare and ranked number 37 in the quality category, something needs to change. Rogers discussed the broad stakeholder support and participation for the movement, as well as the incredible volunteer involvement. The four ‘centers’ include: the Center to Promote Public-Payer Implementation, the Center for Multi-Stakeholder Demonstration, the Center for eHealth Information Adoption and Exchange and the Center for Health Benefit Redesign and Implementation. Medical Homes will provide superb access to care, patient engagament in care, clinical information systems, care coordination, team care, patient feedback and publically available information.
Edwards explained that the Obama administration believes the medical homes concept is the best way to approach healthcare reform. The U.S. House of Representatives has showed great support for the movement and is helping develop and allocate funds for a five-year pilot program. She expressed her enthusiasm for the movement and her prediction that the medical home model is certainly the future of health care.
