started writing in the 1930’s .
He was editor of Evening
News Magazine. His hobby
is to write story.
He has won several
prizes in the short story,has
had a novel serialized in a
women’s magazine, and who
threatens to win the 1957
Palanca Award in the short
story.
After writing for several
years Vicente Rivera Jr. died
in 1999 in Houston,Texas.

PLOT SYNOPSIS
In the story, a guy named Felix went
to a movie house and went home alone,
enjoying the quiet and beautiful evening and
streets and buildings. He is 21 years old who
work on his first job in Manila. When he went
home, he saw a beautiful, little 11 years old
girl named Maria. He saw Maria reading his
copy of Greek Mythology. Felix tried to talk
with Maria, but, Maria is to shy to response.
He lend the book Maria for a while until
Maria finish the book.
Maria live with her Uncle Lucio , a
janitor. Maria’s parents are both dead and her sister
have already a new family. Maria loves to walk and
explore the city. Maria finished the book she
borrow from Felix and returned it.
Felix and Maria become friends. But, the
war came. It’s World War II that time, should live
their homes and evacuate to a safe place to survive.
So one day, Felix went to Maria’s house, but it’s
too late. They are both separated by the war and did
not see each other again.

When Felix came out to the late night
movie. He shivered a little as he stood
for a moment in the narrow street,
looking up at the distant sky, alive with
stars. He stood there letting, the night
seep in him and listening. The street
was empty, the houses on the street
dim with the kind of ghostly dimness
that seems to embrace sleeping houses.
He had always liked empty streets in
the night.
Felix saw Maria reading on the table.
They looked at each other, startled.
When they talking at the bench. Maria
borrowed the book from Felix, at first
Maria hesitated to borrow the book but
Felix said it's ok so Maria borrowed it.
Felix asked Maria why is he living with
Mang Lucio. Maria answered he is my
uncle. Felix and Maria become friends.
When the World War II happen. Felix said everything
was unreal, and it's like living on a motion picture
screen with yourself as actor and audience. But the
sounds of the bombs were real enough. He also said
that in intramuros the people left their homes the first
night of the war. Many of them slept in the floor.
Felix returned home to find the apartment,
everyone was there but Maria is gone. He
asked Mang Lucio where is her, Mang
Lucio answered she's gone, she already
left. She went to her aunt, she will sleep
there tonight.
When Felix found a new girl
named Mary but Felix broke up
with her because he realized that
he is still in love with Maria and he
miss Maria.

go to Maria’s house but he didn’t see Maria

Many people will walk in
and out of our life, but only true
friends will leave footprints in our
heart.
Symbolism
Book – the copy of Felix of Greek
Myth, the book that Maria is reading
when Felix saw Maria for the first time.
Because of that book, Felix had a
chance to talk to Maria and become
friends.
Posters – Maria stopped to look at the
posters at the theater. Then Felix saw
her, and he feels like Maria is sad. So at
that moment, Felix took the chance to
talk to Maria and comfort her.
Maria’s Smile – symbolizes trust and
a new friendship with her and Felix.
