As an engineer of over 10 years’ experience I have worked on the design and installation of a number of
challenging and complex projects from residential and social housing to mass transportation and data centres,
energy generation and infrastructure. Many of the projects have included an element of renewable energy, in which
I have a keen interest, and all projects have involved the integration of multiple electrical and mechanical systems.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Earthing System Design and Integration
As part of the Whitechapel Station Crossrail Upgrade Works, I was lead engineer for the design of the station
earthing system which incorporated multiple segregated earthing systems and single point interaction. The design
included station and traction rated systems as well as DNO and private HV network earthing systems. Analysis of
fault current path and earth loop impedance was undertaken, and the calculations were assured by the Crossrail
Engineering Group assurance team in conjunction with the Traction and HV network design teams. In addition to
the design of the earthing networks within the station, I was also involved with the design and implementation of the
Lightning Protection System for the station and provided close support to construction teams and specialist
designers for manufacture of bespoke strike plates and air termination networks.
Power Distribution
I have been closely involved with the design of electrical power intake and distribution systems from 230V to 22kV
AC on almost every project I have worked on. On some smaller projects this has been in the capacity as lead
electrical engineer negotiating single phase supplies, and in more recent times negotiating with DNO and network
design teams bringing multiple high voltage supplies to a switchroom or private substation. Much of the work has
involved negotiation with local authorities, DNOs, building control and clients regards building design standards and
best practice, however in many cases the delivery of the project has required a HV distribution network, of which I
have been involved with the design.
Design Assurance and Management
From the start of my time at NG Bailey very early on I have been involved with health and safety procedures,
including site permits and processes. The design for safe installation, operation and ultimate removal, a key
element of CDM Regulations, and wide knowledge of statutory standards enables me to advise clients of feasibility
in terms of both safe design and remedial works on system upgrades.
I have had a key role in project tendering and bid management on a number of key projects and fee evaluation and
negotiation for project change notices. This has also included an aspect of project and resource management,
particularly for projects where timescales are critical to project delivery.
As part of my role, particularly on Whitechapel Station Upgrade Works, client design review and assurance has
played a key part. In many instances this has taken the form of a formal design submission and review process,
however on-going client interaction, change control and expectation management has played a significant part.
Renewable Generation and Integration
One of the areas of design which I have a particular interesting is renewable energy generation and distribution; I
have been electrical design lead for a number of large and small scale renewable energy projects; from on-site
CHP and PV generation to the design and integration of a series of 5MW solar farms in the south of England and
Wales. I have undertaken many aspects of renewable energy system delivery including the electrical systems
design, financial assessment, local planning consents, statutory agreement negotiation and low carbon energy
assessment and client advice. Significant amounts of my experience within this area has involved close working
relationships with clients to ensure the proposals not only achieve compliance with regulations, but also delivers a
solution which the client can hold as an example within the local community.
Lighting Design and Controls
A key aspect of electrical engineering which I have been involved in since beginning my University studies has
been lighting and control systems. I have designed for many different and interesting applications including
baggage handling and screening, historic listed buildings, housing developments, London Underground public and
plant spaces and clean laboratory environments. As part of the implementation of designs, I have also been
involved with planning applications and daylight impact studies and occupant ‘Right to Light’ surveys. The
experience in of the different applications of lighting solutions has also enabled me to make informed decisions
regarding lighting control systems, and their integration within building management systems as a whole.
System Controls and Integration
As the development and use of Building Information Modelling extends into more projects BEMS, SCADA control
and monitoring or integration of multiple building electrical systems has become a key focus for clients. As a result
of this, I have had extensive experience integrating and coordinating multiple services and complex specialist
systems, such as communications networks, system interlocking and operational or evacuation requirements. A
particularly interesting aspect of this has been the HV/LV interaction and safety elements of the control systems

and the incorporation of this into the BIM and resulting impact on project delivery is something I would like to
develop.
Fire Detection and Alarm
I have worked on a variety of fire systems which have been significantly different. My design experience has
encompassed systems from L1 to L4 classification delivered using point detection, linear detection and fire
suppression through water and gaseous methods.
Software Experience
I have extensive experience in the use of Amtech & Hevacomp electrical design software, ReLux and DiaLux
lighting design software and high proficiency in the use of photovoltaic system design software PV*SOL. My
experience with CAD is limited to AutoCAD 2D design software; however my knowledge of Microsoft Office
packages, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher, is fairly extensive.
