More than 100,000 deaths are caused by excessive alcohol consumption each year through drunk driving, cirrhosis of the liver, falls, cancer, and stroke. Nearly 14 million Americans meet diagnostic criteria for alcohol use disorders and alcohol kills 6 1⁄2 times more youth than all illicit drugs combined. Tobacco use kills over 440,000 Americans each year, accounting for one in five deaths, though 70 percent of the 45 million Americans who smoke say they want to quit.
